I'll tell you why, the gates were opened to let the reservior at Thirlmere drain, that's why. Next thing we know there is an 8ft torrent of water forcing everything in it's path down Main Street.

some buildings there do get flooded, not often, but i stood and watched buildings that are well up and away from the river.

to give an idea of the amount of rain that came in 24hrs, it would take 6months to drop that amount @ normal rates.

it breached walls 10-12ft high by several ft, & embankent in memorial gardens around 15 ft.

2 bridges @ workington survived 150yrs of cumbrias harsh weather til that night.

@snaed27: no, there is no "so called downpour" involved. it was a true downpour that cumbria has never seen before, and this is a county that is infamous for harsh weather.

also, an investigation is currently on going into united utilities releasing 220 million gallons from a resevoiur (thrilmere) into an already patrially flooded valley.

The point I am making is this was no act of Mother Nature .....I have NO doubt it rained and was of an unnatural heavyness...and helped along by the sounds of it ....and farmers not getting much help at all and told to sell their land I am not a sceptic as you suggest ...the reality is Global Warming has been proved to be a huge scam .....that will involve Huge taxes on people ....not corperations ...

past weather paterns should tell people that. several feet snow drifts burying roads, vehicles, railways, and even trains in early 60's, half that again in early 80's, severe drought about 77. goes full circle.

mother nature won't let us polute this planet too much. these freaks of nature in weather wipes out vehicles and homes that cause co2, atleast for a while.

I have become very fond of Cockermouth over the last two years, and it is gutting to see how the flooding will devastate the center of the town. Thoughts and prayers out to all the residents of Cumbria, and especially Cockermouth, Workington and Keswick. Thanks for the upload and keep it coming - only way to follow the story in the US.
