  • So glad that there's no Pato Banton on the original :)

  • I first heard this one as a remake by Bonnie Raitt. It was on "Green Light" which was expected to be her breakthrough. That would have to wait 'til "Nick of Time" a few years later. Instead this and the Clash's remake of "Police on My Back" would get Eddy's career going again in the 80's.

  • When I was in the Philippines in 1968-69, there were two or three versions of this song on jukeboxes in the bars, none of those versions by the Equals. In fact, I didn't know the Equals had done this song first until I returned to the States. I didn't know about the Equals' original version until then because none of the local Top 40 stations played the song when it was new.

  • Great song

  • Like the beat

  • a young eddy grant! ..rude boy on electric ave" .

  • so I gotta learn this for music class played it once and knew it how easy-.- allthough good song

  • Eddy did it better solo

  • very cool and funky song back to 1968!

  • What great footage! Is this the precursor to Funk? It's got a real funky vibe.

  • Never mind Jonathan Richman, the Ramones, or the Sex Pistols... THIS is clearly the birth of Punk.

  • Eighties! Come As You Are!!!!

  • Don't back Baby don't back

  • Don't Baby don't back

  • This is one of the greatest little lost pop songs of all time. I think it reached #17 on the charts at the time, but it is better than 99% of all records that have ever come out. Peace.

  • Play this LOUD !!! Its Fab baby !very groovy yeah !!!

  • Groovy!!!! Love it:) Was looking for the Player song.

  • One of the greatest one hit wonders in Rock and Roll.

  • @loveclevelandohio1 the Equals have more hits than Baby come back , but it was their greatest ,and their only nr 1 , viva bobby joe make it nr 9 , and there was softly softly , police on my back , laurel and hardy

  • @walter4092 Hmm. Interesting. I honestly didn't know that. Gotta check those other songs out. Thanks for the info.

  • Used to dance with this song when I was in Cuba...Love it

  • My friend 'Sly' in his old band.. Still a legend and drinking in in Camden Town!

  • @Archievegas1 Tell your mate Sly that John Hall the drummer here is still going and living in Frankston Victoria Australia.

  • It was a shame that the BBC used miming then, otherwise a masterpiece.

  • Fantastic this has so many happy memories for me ...x

  • How many of those English birds did Eddy Grant have after the show?

  • @zowlik one of these birds could be your mother

  • @Macrotodon

Actually one of these birds could easily be your grandmother. If they were 18 in 1968, they are now 60 and retired.

    ....................but weren't they just delicious?????

    Mine still is!

  • i enjoyed watchin it ^^

  • The singer looks like Thierry Henry but I'm sure he doesn't handball when he plays footy!

  • Thanks to Vinylsolution for this, and extra thanks to terser for identifying that unique guitar!

  • I came across this by accident, haven't heard since I was maybe 15. And to find out after all this time EG was involved ... WOW! Its like that show ... Connections! Awesome tune and video ... thank you much.

  • EXCELENT,EXCELENTE,

    MUITO BOM.

    MUITO BOM MESMO.

  • Eddy Grant is playing guitar; he's next to the lead singer

  • I still remember my dad, playing this song on the record player... i was just a kid... it bring back memories.... They are really good... Where did you get this Clip... thanks !

  • This is maybe the first time I've actually seen a band that used a Wandre electric - beautiful guitar.

  • I was 5 years old when this came out, still sounds good

  • b4 you all say old bastard got it in first, WHEN I WAS BORN THIS WAS NUMBER 1 IN THE CHARTS...omg. :-)

  • Proof that the best rock and roll only needs two chords!

  • Will someone please point out the bass player to me?.

The bass is pretty prominent in this song, but I see only 3 guitarists and a drummer who might be Parfitt from Quo.

  • At 2:00 you will see the bass player....

  • @thechzman Thank you,,,,,,but that guy is strumming a six string.I don't think its a bass.

  • @hanskurzen It is actually at 2:04 where you can see the bass player in the vest. I believe that is Eddy Grant.

  • @thechzman I stand corrected. Eddy is the lead singer, but I am sure the guy in the vest is playing the bass.

  • @thechzman I believe the lead singer is Desmond Dekker (The Aces) who sang "The israelites"

  • Singing lead is Dervin Gordon. That's his brother Lincoln on the other side of Eddy Grant.

  • @thechzman Sorry,,,,,I cannot see a bass player here at all.I see 3 guys strumming 6 string guitars.

  • @hanskurzen I have just watched another Equals on youtube. They are playing live as oposed to this miming and again there is no bass player,,,just 3 guys on guitar ,,can't believe it

  • @hanskurzen ..You have got to be kiddin...Rick Parfitt from Quo was a guitartist...NOT a drummer

  • @candybrae It looks like R Parfitt,,,,probably not,,,,,,,then again,in those days musicians would grab what ever work they could get.Jimmy Page played a lot of bass.

  • in my land, Babi Com Ba! was big hit. it was songed by Congo Cal and Long Neck Zombees. song about little baby who crawl in jungle away from house. mama cry "Babi Com Ba!" it really mean "See that baby go!"

  • Got this record as a hand me down not long after its release

  • dit is het, ok ong.45 jaar geleden maar lekker

hangen bij de jukebox en maar hopen dat er van

links en rechts gekeken werd.Da`s pas lekker!!!

  • ha-ha! Look at Eddy Grant!

  • You mean "Electric Avenue' Eddy Grant? That far back. wow. Is that a Zematis Guitar?? The wierd one??? That far back??? never saw one until Woody played with The Faces..G'day

  • Not sure about the guitar but definitely Eddy Grant long before Electric Ave.

  • @12347771 Yep ... Eddy grant before "Electric Avenue"

  • all time fav,of mine !! can remember, when I was standing in record-shop,singing this tune to the staff !!

was 5 years old+my 13 years old brother wished this

single so much !! as my parents weren't involved so much in these sounds(although being Elvis-fans),they dragged me there,to find "right record" for my brother !!

Luckily,we could buy the record+i still have it with original cover + in good state !!

    THANX !!!

  • can be heared in the shop I work, I'm dancing in between the racks...

  • How repetitive...1/5

  • This was the BBC experiment with live vocals on backing tracks in 68...as a 15 year old i didnt know the differerence... but it sounds good now

    Jim

  • I dont understand how a fraction of a clip of 'Dee Time' with the great Simon Dee makes it on to the start of this, which is a Top of the Pops appearance not a Dee Time one.The equals did appear on Simons show later in the year with a number called 'Softly Softly'.R.I.P. Simon Dee also

  • Did Simon Dee die? When did that happen? It wasn't on the News.

  • Yes Sazzy on 29th August this year of bone marrow cancer after a short illness ; he was 74.All news items & obituaries can be found on the net

  • One of my all time favourite songs and the follow up was Viva Bobby Joe which was also good. I still have the 45's - I was 18 in 1968 - Music then was so........good, we were very spoilt for choice.

  • love this song !! GREATTTTT !! thanx for posting Lyndloo...

  • Very cool song...what guitar is that? The one with the hole in it?

  • Thanks for this - nice to see Eddie Grant in his younger days!

  • Great tune. Does anybody know, by the way, what those frilly chested shirts are called that were fashionable in the late 60's? (The kind the lead singer is wearing)

  • Edwardian tuxedo shirts.
