it would be nice to have a hang glider where you sit down like an ultra light. Im not keen on the position of lying forward and being stuffed into a harness
@210482fmj Around 600fpm best glide (8:1) and 200fpm min sink.... I think. it's been a long time since I've looked at those numbers. It's a 1987 Wills Wing 155 Sport American if you want to do some research. The newer Sport 2 performs much better.
@39cbell OR Coast. 1st lesson in 1990- $100. 2 lessons in 1995 $125/day. That instructor moved away after 2 lessons. He set me up with a great deal on a HG and told me to practice 100 launch/landings on the dune. At 88 flights another instructor watched me and said I was ready. He charged $20/day if you had your own gear. He took me up for a high alt. flight, gave me some tests, and gave me my H1&H2. The next summer I paid for my H3 test with a friend that was certified to grant licenses.
@39cbell The 5yrs '90-95, I read 5 books on it, watched several instructional videos, studied aerodynamics, and went to several HG events. By 1995 I was fully prepared. My experience is not normal. It should take 10-15 days of training, and it's probably $175-200/day now. Flying a HG is actually pretty easy. The hard part is knowing when to launch and when/how to land. "It's better to be on the ground wishing you were flying instead of being in the sky wishing you were on the ground."
@soapbox94 Thanks soap box. That is great to hear. I've always been really quick to pick up things and lord knows I'll be reading my butt off long before I go to take my lessons. Hopefully it won't take long if I prepare. You really scored a deal on the 20$ a day though. I highly doubt I will be able to find that.
I don't think you can find a hanggliding video that make's you want to try the sport more than this one. Great job with combining the video with the music. Nice..
@Waxer3929 the glider recovers from stall without input. just make sure you have enough altitude.
when you push out on the bar hard, this you can feel the glider begin to mush. the glider becomes less responsive to roll inputs. the wing of a beginner glider is designed to stall out in sections. the feeling of wind at your face stops. a stall is a flow separation over a flexible wing there's more than enough warning.
Is it easy to do with lessons? or is hang gliding one of those things that takes years to master. I think it looks amazing....like flying. how experienced do you have to be?
@spencechan I think people just like to yell "FAKE" on youtube for fun. It does look like green screen, but if you think about it; you'd have to fly a hang glider to capture the background footage anyway.
That looks so fun. I can barely imagine what it must feel like to fly like that, its like the closest thing to naturally flying. I hope I can do it some day.
In my case: Glider $1200 (used), Harness $400 (new), Chute $300 (new), Vario $100 (used), Instruction $440 to Hang III. USD 1995. You can easily spend waaaaay more. Way cheaper and safer than motorcycle racing!
@soapbox94 hmm. good point. I'm doing an AFF course soon. When i was indoor skydiving i catched the bug bad :) maybe i'll try hang gliding once. Looks like a lot of fun ;)

@humboldtwings I guess I just put the right search words in years ago. When you search HG, it comes up first page. I think it's a beautiful flying site, maybe people like that?
@humboldtwings I watched the video because I wanted to get an idea of what hang gliding was like because I'm thinking of going, I'm sure that's why a lot of people watched it, not just because of the views.
Actually, hang gliding isn't done "without a motor". This type of launch requires getting to the top of the ridge using a truck. So hang gliders are indirectly powered by gasoline. Interestingly though, the more skill you have, the longer you can stay up, and the amount of gasoline used for the time in the air decreases. More skill = less gas.
I just realized one of my comments was flagged as spam. I did not mean for my comment to post twice. I assure you I am not spam lol . This is still my favorite video on youtube. Unfortunately I did not get to hang glide while I was in Oregon. but I am not giving up on my dream. I WILL fly one day :)
@phoenixfyre71 Don't give up. It's not as impossible as it might seem. Wherever you are, there's flying to be done. People are finding that the most unlikely places to fly are good ones. If you ever see a large bird circling in the air, there's a thermal, and there's flying to be done. BTW, I didn't remove your (double) post.
Ok, so as of now I know almost nothing about hang gliding. But I want to. Seriously. I want to now. I want to fly around and laugh at people who aren't flying around. Maybe lasso a falcon and keep it as a pet while I'm up there, race it or something. Teach it hyperbeam and beat the Elite Four. Then I'll show Gary who's boss once and for all. Ok, got a little sidetracked there... but for real, what's the first step to getting into hang gliding? Awesome video by the way :D
@RichardBehiel I went to a hang gliding meet and watched and asked tons of questions. Bought some books, took some lessons, bought some gear, and Voila! 88 flights on the bunny hill and got my Hang 2 all in one summer. Take lessons first, then buy gear. The next usual question is: How much does it cost? A: around $100/day for lessons, and gear can be had for $500 to $15,000. All depends on how much you want to spend and what performance you want. The glider in this video was $1200 used.
@soapbox94 Thanks for the quick and detailed reply! Oh and also is there an age limit (I'm 16)? I've been saving up $1000 or so for skydive training this summer so I don't have to jump tandem but I think I'll look into this instead.
when hang gliding, is it possible to do a maneuver that you can't recover from assuming that altitude is not a problem? I'm just wondering about the dangers of hang gliding because I'm 18 years old and right now the idea of soaring like an eagle above the earth seems like the coolest thing in the world. Depending on the risk factors (and money) this could be something I could seriously get into.

How hard would it be to learn hang gliding if I already have my glider pilot's license? I understand that controlling the glider would be a whole new thing, but I imagine many of the concepts would be the same, like finding thermals, and understanding how the glider manoeuvres.

what does the glider do if you exceed the vme i know all are diffrent, seriously wanting to get into this use to dream of flying when i was a little tyk
@wind2jammer I think it's VNE? Velocity Never to Exceed. I think mine is 55 mph or knots? The glider just vibrates, shakes, and doesn't perform well. The anti-dive wires make 55+ pretty hard maintain anyway. Stall is about 18, Min sink 20, Max L/D 25.
@TellinTheTruth Actually it was just under an hour long flight. I've flown for 8+ hrs at this site on a good day. This day people were flying for 3-4hrs. My tape was only 60min. so I had to go and burn altitude to make sure I got the landing on film. I edited it down to fit the song; plus it gets pretty boring watching someone go back and forth, back and forth.
"how do you get back up?" You fold up the glider and put it on a truck and drive back to the top.
It amazes me that you don't have to do a running landing with hang gliding, am searching for a place where I can get lots of lessons, this just looks amazing, too bad I don't live in the U.S. I barely ever see hang gliders in Europe.
This video is amazing ! this makes me want to start hand gliding even more. The most inspiring video on youtube. Anyone know any good clubs/places in England where you can hand glide with views as stunning as this ?
hey im thinking about buying a glider and suggestions? Also what do i need other than the glider i know a harness but is there anything else that doesn't come with the glider that i should know about?
Lessons, helmet, Lessons, variometer, Lessons, altimeter, Lessons, reserve chute. By all means take some lessons before you buy one. You'll probably find a much better deal once you're into the sport and your local club.
@JohnKeotes You can only fly over the sea for some minutes, because you will be slowly losing altitude. In order to fly for a long time you need to catch rising currents of air, which you will find at cliffs and slopes (depending on the wind) and some more places.
Holy crap, how does doing that feel? I wish there was a way to do this safely. This seems amazing and next time I have to move I want to live in a city where this is possible. I'd trade my sins for that experience
@theartofbone I have just started taking lessons and I don't think it is much more dangerous than many sports. The key is to have good teachers and go at your own pace. If you want to find out where to learn just go to the USHPA web site.
I just took my first lession. I can not wait for my first flight that lasts a few min. I am lucky enough to live just 45 min away from a good place to learn in the north east. So far I love it at Morningside.

2. a.HG school. b. Classifieds, Craigslist, Ebay, Wills Wing, Moyes, etc.
3. No. There's flying in every State of the US and every contry of the World.
Try this: Google "Hang Gliding School"
and yes, this is a frank but smarmy answer to your questions. :)

what does the glider do if you exceed the vme i know all are diffrent, seriously wanting to get into this use to dream of flying when i was a little tyk
wind2jammer 1 year ago
@wind2jammer I think it's VNE? Velocity Never to Exceed. I think mine is 55 mph or knots? The glider just vibrates, shakes, and doesn't perform well. The anti-dive wires make 55+ pretty hard maintain anyway. Stall is about 18, Min sink 20, Max L/D 25.

cool man, 4 minute flight. do you head back up and go again? how do u get back up?
TellinTheTruth 1 year ago
@TellinTheTruth Actually it was just under an hour long flight. I've flown for 8+ hrs at this site on a good day. This day people were flying for 3-4hrs. My tape was only 60min. so I had to go and burn altitude to make sure I got the landing on film. I edited it down to fit the song; plus it gets pretty boring watching someone go back and forth, back and forth.
"how do you get back up?" You fold up the glider and put it on a truck and drive back to the top.

don't lie when you where gliding along the shore the only thing going through your head was "boy i wish i could run this fast" :D amazing vid

is it exhausting, maneuvering the heavy hang glider around with our own weight? im so impatient to fly that thing :(
squallpi 1 year ago
@squallpi Hardly. Coastal flying is as calm and easy as pushing the handlebars on a bicycle.

The 12 people that disliked this must be red neck bible bangers that think man should not fly. This video is so f'n awesome !. great choice of music

It amazes me that you don't have to do a running landing with hang gliding, am searching for a place where I can get lots of lessons, this just looks amazing, too bad I don't live in the U.S. I barely ever see hang gliders in Europe.

hey im thinking about buying a glider and suggestions? Also what do i need other than the glider i know a harness but is there anything else that doesn't come with the glider that i should know about?
Devon1251903 1 year ago
Lessons, helmet, Lessons, variometer, Lessons, altimeter, Lessons, reserve chute. By all means take some lessons before you buy one. You'll probably find a much better deal once you're into the sport and your local club.
soapbox94 1 year ago
@soapbox94 yeah i already have taken a lot of lessons... but sadly no lessons on buying one : /

Can i fly over the sea?
JohnKeotes 1 year ago
@JohnKeotes You can only fly over the sea for some minutes, because you will be slowly losing altitude. In order to fly for a long time you need to catch rising currents of air, which you will find at cliffs and slopes (depending on the wind) and some more places.

Holy crap, how does doing that feel? I wish there was a way to do this safely. This seems amazing and next time I have to move I want to live in a city where this is possible. I'd trade my sins for that experience
theartofbone 1 year ago
@theartofbone I have just started taking lessons and I don't think it is much more dangerous than many sports. The key is to have good teachers and go at your own pace. If you want to find out where to learn just go to the USHPA web site.
