the test for any actor is how often do you really believe what they are saying: Mason, Mitchum, Rains, Joseph Calleia, for me almost anything any of these guys ever said I absolutely believed every damn word in every movie they ever made good or bad, and believe it or not Tim Holt look at how natural his performance is in Treasure but dont get me started on OVERACTing, which is what most films are even when they are underacting
We're supposed to like this film for its 'artistic merit.' It does have that but what I've loved about it since the first time I saw it in a theatre in the 40's is Barbara Bel Geddes. She seemed so much like the girls I knew, so unlike the stereotyped women's roles of the time--temptresses and cloying girl-next-door types. But this role, to me, presented a young woman I could imagine knowing and caring about. Check out the whole film to find out what I mean.
Great scene! Lots of crazy camera work in this movie for sure....and yeah, the cast is fantastic.
Robert Parrish the film's editor said that Max Ophuls told him that Mason was the best actor he ever worked with. The most reliable, the most talented.
They showed this on local TV way back in the late 70's or early 80's but I fell asleep or something. I wish all of it was here at youtube or that TCM would show it. I've been reading about it for years. Max Ophuls didn't make many movies while living here in America. What a dynamite cast (James Mason, Robert Ryan & Barbara Bel Geddes)! In any case, thanks for posting this delightful scene from it. What beautiful photography & set design....surprising for an independent film.
I've never seen James Mason laugh before! So I watched 3:12 - 3:25 about six times! =D

Why is this surprising for an "independent film"? It was the indies and the B-movies that had artistic adventurousness - not the Hollywood shit!
