eueui, a while ago my mom was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and it was taking over her body at such a fast pace that the doctors said she'd be in a wheel chair in a matter of like 5 years(she was in her early 30's). so she got a bunch of people praying, went back to the doctor and they told her the artritis was completely gone and they didn't know how it happened. so i'm thinking God still hears prayer. :)

So obviously secular reasoning is sufficient to produce pro-life legislation arguments. Why, then, bring God into the fray? eueui, a while ago my mom was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and it was taking over her body at such a fast pace that the doctors said she'd be in a wheel chair in a matter of like 5 years(she was in her early 30's). so she got a bunch of people praying, went back to the doctor and they told her the artritis was completely gone and they didn't know how it happened. so i'm thinking God still hears prayer. :)

America does have the separation of church and state. Talking openly about God in politics has nothing to do with establishing a particular Christian denomination as the national rule.

i understand how this can seem fake. but if Michele Bachmann really wanted to stay safe for re-election then she would just play it in the middle and certainly not do things like this less than a year before elections. that's why i think, unless there's specific proof otherwise, she is genuinly risking her political career to stand up for what she thinks is right. and by right, meaning she is standing up for less government and for taxpayers who don't want to fund abortion.

Taking the middle ground isn't always the most effective political strategy. Instead, these politicians seek to polarize the electorate thereby making the particular audience to which they're playing dramatically more eager to vote for them, and then they just forget about the apathetic opposition.

Do you consider keeping theology out of legislation to be oppressing religious freedom? Personally, I interpret the teachings of Jesus to be about how a good Christian should live his/her own life; I don't see them as bearing upon civil law---only God's law.
And for those who fear that they will be punished for living in a corrupt society, just remember that God spared the life of Lot and his family from the fate of Sodom.

well, if you really want to keep theology out of legislation and law then it would be a good idea to do away with laws that prohibite stealing, murder, rape, etc... we also wouldn't have any civil rights legislation in place because who's to say it's really "bad" to be a racist? the civil rights movement gained momentum with the understanding that we are all equal under God. same with womens rights. our laws come from a basic understanding that there is a right and a wrong. no religion=no laws.

Sorry, but the condemnation of thievery, homicide, rape, and property rights have greater precedence in civil law than theological law. Hammurabi's Code is older than the Ten Commandments and is actually more comprehensive in terms of the articulation of crime.
Prior to the rise of Emperor Constantine and the Christian Roman Empire, civil laws were formulated based on what could logically be ascertained as most beneficial for society. If the ancients could pull it off, I imagine we can as well.

I fear the truth of the matter may be that public displays of religious extremism are only encouraging more extremism abroad. Fewer people today believe in the Theory of Evolution than ten/twenty years ago. This extremism is dragging America backwards. When people see content like this, there is always one of three reactions: 1) Laughter mixed with disgust and terror [from people like myself]; 2) Antipathy followed by dismissal [from most people]; and 3) Approval and subsequent self-affirmation.
The problem is that group (1) is so rare and group (2) is so large while group (3) seems to be growing at a very alarming rate. If it keeps up, I feel America may eventually be subject to more extreme religious radicalism than Saudi Arabia.
