  • I am not a New Yorker, but in a documentary on Al Smith I came in touch with this music and can't stop the tears.

  • I grew up in L.A., but this New York song is nostalgic for me anyway. I must have seen old vaudeville acts with this music when I first started to go to movies as a kid. I think the words capture something universal about childhood in this country, maybe the west in general. At 74, I still choke up listening to the tune. I sure wish I'd have had a girl friend like Mamie O'Rourke.

  • My Mother learned this song as a young girl from her mother and taught it to my sisters and I. Bittersweet to hear this.

  • I think that this song was on a history channel video about ellis island. It was on some program they used to have called the history channel classroom, where there were a bunch of old videos about 10 minutes long. Does anyone on YT know what I'm talking about? I really want to know if there's some way to see those old videos again.

  • @Infowarriorification I suggest Ken Burns' documentary series on New York. That's where I heard this music for the first time.

  • This song always brings tears to my eyes

    even though I am British.

    Beutiful tune.

  • I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, but I remember singing this song as a child. It's great to hear it again. ♫♥♫

  • A beautiful song,my father used to dance to this song in the 1920's.

Thanks for posting the song,Nat Cole does it better than anyone.

  • The unofficial anthem of New York City.
