Some constructive criticism, if you collimate side to side tighter(without chopping of the area under examination)you get a better detailed radiograph as scatter is greatly reduced.
You are correct; however I have only been to one clinical site during my college career that still had 8x10 cassettes. Most hospitals with CR equipment have conformed to 10x12 and 14x17 cassettes. DR equipment doesn't use cassettes at all, so this would not even be an option.
I think it's just preference really. We were taught to do it on the lateral side because that's how the rads read them where we were.

i have to disagree with 10x12 on a lateral wrist, you can do it with an 8x10 crosswise.
