His priority was opera.The unprecedented vocal studies ABROAD happened during Khrushchov's thaw and the age of Minister of Culture Furtseva who risked her party career. (The flight of Nureyev attracted big international attention) M.M. needed 2 study periods in Milan and after return he had to take the post at Baku opera.

Anyone with ear and eye must admit that this is a great voice and actor. I believe the focus in his voice would project on any stage. So many times the really large voices are devoid of beauty and quality. They soon become woofy, ie, many Wagnerian singers. I believe that it is true that what we hear in the U.S.A. is controlled by copyrite and other factors of the market place. I know that some people have pretty strong ethnic predjudices, but this is undeniably a very good artist.

One either can sing opera or cannot.Muslim can sing any range of opera male voice or any genre.He can adjust voice to any genre so well you might not believe that is him singing.Thanks to God for the gift of voices like him.

"Small voice" doesn't say anything about the quality or artistry of a singer, but rather means that it's a voice that simply doesn't have a lot of volume and "sound mass" on it, which is problematic on the opera stage because the hall is to be filled.

Studied in Italy and the youngest Peoples Artist in former USSR.He was compared to Mario Lanza because of his popularity and kind'a similar career. He rarely performed in opera because of relatively small voice.Of course he would never perform Rigoletto in opera but as a concert singer was absolutly amazing.

For the Soviet Union his voice was more than good. He didn't want to be tied to one city , strict discipline and small salary.

dear strauja, your comment re my english is irrelevant as it is perfect, unlike yours. Secondly, i don't know who is franco...whoever... and what he said. Thirdly, i was born in Magomayev's motherland and can tell you with great assurance that it was Muslim's personal preference to chose what music to sing. He did not feel opera as a priority but at the same time he managed to perform quite a lot of opera roles. You can find videos even in u-tube. cheers.
