Great stuff. I am in the middle of building a model of the HMS Endevour.  You have inspired me to make it float and sail now.

How long was the build?

It takes about 3-4 months to build the ship. I built it twice so the first time round was longer. I may build a 3rd ship because I feel that the rudder though nice in scale should be bigger and maybe add a detachable ballast keel like other model boats.

The current ship needs a quare rigg update. another builder has shown me how to get the sails pulled to 30 degrees!

What does it take for a model ship to float properly and not upside down or sideways?

the vessel must be ballasted with enough wieght at the bottom of the ship to counteract any tipping. the ship must  therefore be built light and strong with only heavy parts reserved for essential structure. the ship may also have a long counterwieght keel which is best used for really small boats or professional rc sail boats... It is imortant that a vessel is not so heavy that it sinks below the planned waterline because it will easilly swamp and maybe sink!

I am kinda inspired to try a Clipper ship or a small schooner.

My last schooner was very fast but I would like to make a slightlly larger hull because the schooner decks keep getting awash near the bow, although filled with unsinkable foam It looks annoying.- Oh and the black p[earl is also sensitive to high winds!

Oh you are really building a Submarine...

if that is the case it probablly will not be able to actually sail by wind power.

Submarine propusion will require propellers.

I like to keep my ships purelly on sail power and ride on wind.

I see no sense in building these for sale because the money in not worth the cost in time... People usually make very low bids on my art and that is an insult!

I spent $200.00 or more on just the Electronics.

This ship is not offered as a kit so you will have to build it yourself.

you can get a Radio controll and servo set from just about any hobby shop that sells model boats, The Black pearl pirate ship is a custom built model that I made, (Long story!) the servos to control the sails and rudder.

I dont think there are any current kits available that will sail so you can only have one if you built it from scratch!

If the battery failed on a sailing vessel it would most likely sail a course it was last commanded or slowly drift down wind of the lake and under the worst conditions there is nothing exciting about a boat that seams to be anchored in the middle of the lake and that could never happen because an anchored floating model could be vandalised, sunk or stolen by punks.

When planking the ship, does it matter if I start the planking from the top or bottom?

Start planking from the center keel up, The hard part will later be that you will some time later want to plank the sides independantlly and there will be some transition in some plank angles but this is what the real ships look like,This is called carvel constrution, If you overlap planks then Its clinker built and those are for Viking ships.

Which is faster? The Pearl or Flying Dutchman?

in the movie the Flying Dutchman is said to be faster upwind and the pearl can out sail her downwind, Technically both ships should doclose to even in speed but the pearl is a small galleon . the Flying dutchman is a Great ship or very large galleon of the wasa class which is fast for its size.

the camera is an OLYMPUS, atylus 720SW shock and waterproof for up to 10 feet underwater.

the camera was damaged at the time this video was taken but has been repaired. there is another model that can now go to 33 feet underwater!

No Engines! The ship is powered by the wind , In this video I had to find a really calm place to film the ship, I later showed there were no propellers below the waterline. and I pushed it for the shot- filming the ship under sail is very very hard! see other videos! this is a close up of a working model sailing ship.

This is built a lot like a model balsa wood airplain except it is waterproofed with resin glassing. balast is of modeling clay. the sails are made to work all together with a single servo- slave rigg style. the whole ship is plank on frame construction.

No this is not even built with stock blueprints!I draft my own ships in this case by photographs and books, it is one of a kind and a unique experiment in model sail scaling...not to be confused with others, this cannot be mass produced and is true ART.

The other pirate ships on the internet all have a supplymentry propeller and some sail power. my ship only uses the power of wind and rudder- there may be some other ships models beginning to appear in the markets but expect them to be built cheap and -!

Dont worry about that, I built many ships and was still able to sell all my duds! you will get good but it always takes time...I personally have never built a perfect boat. you will always find YOUR SELF as the ultimate critic.

I think I made a fleet of of 30 ships so far (MOSTLY GALLEONS)I might do a rc windgammer but everyone wants to see a flying dutchman- oh well back to work!
