  • I for one, have been playing the Euphonium for going on 4 years now, and I'm a sophmore and already 1st chair out of all my school(10 euphoniums), but even I have to admit, I would probably take at least 6 months to get this piece down, just for the embrouchure changes.

  • To everyone that does not like this, HE DID THIS TO ENTERTAIN, not to show off. True, it may not be technically demanding HOWEVER, his flexibility, time, and appeal to the audience was fantastic. The audience really enjoyed the performance and they will remember it. That is the most important thing a performer should strive for. Also, this guy will completely school any of you on Euphonium, He was just signed on to besson with the likes of Steven Mead and David Childs.

  • @eupwnium070 we are not complaining about if its hard or not or his appeal. It just sounds BAD.

  • @videofanYT00 I apologize, I did not mean to direct that comment at anyones opinion. I meant to direct it to the many people that are attacking his ability. Whether you think its good or bad you can not say he didn't perform this well. I am a Euphonium player in college myself and I don't much care for this type of music either, but I'm sure Matthew put in a lot of work on this piece. I just ask that everyone respect his ability regardless of their opinions.

  • Euphonium player here. that's really not hard to do at all. It more of a question of "should" rather than "can"

  • Impressive flexibility, but lacks in tone and technique. Mainly articulation. Love it, however... TED never fails to entertain and fascinate me.

  • Felicito a este joven tan valioso. Quienes critican es porque sienten angustia por el bien ajeno.

  • Blimey, just cause all you snobs can't be as good as this kid doesn't mean you have to bite his head of for it!

  • @MrTrombonerdude Exactly, why cant everyone understand that he's good enough to be on TV and Youtube, yet they have the nerve to say he sucks.

  • ... you have entirely missed the point of Euphonium. Euphony- The quality of being pleasing to the ear. This is like rubbing a cat the wrong way with a wet hand.

  • AHHH i ws wondering where my first chair got this from

  • damn boy i like it

  • I want to hear the original sousaphone version of this. Based on the sound/style, it probably is better for that instrument.

Not a huge fan of this rendition or of this technique in general. I think it was put best in a comment I saw on another video:

'Euphoniums are the sound of heaven's choirs'.

  • How does he harmonize with himself?

  • yeah yeah yeah it aint the original

  • That's not a new sound....that's just sucking

  • this is bullshit...makes euphonium sound bad,.

  • too bad that vocal thing is older than dirt....

  • @odg1190 this famous and have thousands of people watching him on YouTube if he wasn't?! He's also only 21/22 but he's principal euphonium of the Fairy (Geneva) band... Who are rated as the fifth best band in the world!! Only behind Cory, Tradegar, Foden's and the Black Dyke band! This guy is an unbelievable talent who is continuing to improve at possibly the best conservatoire in the world, under the guidance of two of the best euphonium tutors in the world!! Get a clue before rubbishing such

  • @odg1190 firstly, it's flight of the bumblebee, secondly, flight of the bumblebee literally has no tune..., thirdly, this is a euphonium, not a baritone, and fourthly, you clearly know nothing about brass playing. This may not be to your taste, but the sort of lip flexibility needed to play something like this is absolutely unbelievable! This is something new and different, which may well be why you don't like it. It's obviously that Matthew is talented... How else would he be this famous and h

  • @euphoniumtillidie this is not the flight of the bumblebee. this is the warrior comes alive by nat mcintosh, a sousaphone player and this piece was originally composed for sousaphone.

  • THIS IS A DISGRACE TO THE EUPHONIUM!

  • ive been playing euphonium since 4 grade and intend to go to college for euphonium and this is awful

and its a rip off Youngblood Brass Band whos been doing this for alot longer than thiskid

  • What a waste of a pro euph.

  • classic example why woodwinds dominate brass.

  • @EragonLego dude your high

  • @EragonLego lol you guys can't do the jaws theme and star wars songs in a good tone.

  • Amazing obly thing is his sound i play the euphonium and im more in tune

  • This ridiculous! Enough said.

  • What was that ? :o

  • Oystein Baddsvik is the only person that can perform a song with multiphonics, thank you Fnugg.

  • Listen folks.... Everyone is allowed to have their opinions. That said I just want to address the comments that are targeting Matt as having come from no where and or made up randomness.

That is just not true. . . This "style/technique" is called polyphonics. It is credited with being first develop and widely performed on tuba by Øystein Baadsvik. Who was most likely an inspiration for matt.

    website baadsvik.com.

    vid of Øystein: youtube.com/watch?v=mHMyrhilkdo

  • I play euphonium too and this guy has the WORST tone in this piece!!!

  • @ActingBug28 No thats Multiphonic and sounds good

  • @TheHackrid Uhhh NO it doesn't!!! It sounds like a cat dying!!

  • worst tone ever,he obiviously just pressing keys,my band director would kill him!!

  • I have been playing Euphonium for almost 8 years and that is probobly the WORST sound and tone I have ever heard from a euphonium in my whole life!!

  • Not a fan of this. Obviously good, being noted as a prodigy, but there is just some music that I don't like and this is it.

  • WOW MAN!!! I play euphonium too, and I've been playing for about 6 months for the school band. I hope someday I can show people my skill like that too!!!

  • much rather hear a slow melody than this squeaky gate shit! obv a good player but this does nothin for me!

  • im sorry but he sucks!!!

  • He gives euphonium a new voice... via Nat's days in young blood brass band.

  • thumbs up if u think it sounded like shit

  • @akamaru225 you should hear where he got this from. /watch?v=MypmT0kwBR0

  • doesn't sound that good sounds like he is pressing the keys randomly while blowing a lot of soft air :/

  • @odg1190 Do you know who this guy is? He's a fantastic talent, who was principal euphonium of NYBB and is studying at RNCM under Steve Mead and David Thornthon! If you could play like him, I'd love to see it :)

And to whoever asked what instrument this is, yeah just to confirm, it definitely is a york eminence :)

  • @euphoniumtillidie he sucks, out of tune, plays radom keys like i said before. It's not like flight of bees because that makes a good melody and when he does certain things it goes from a bad b flat sound to an annoying high pitch sound that about no one can stand. Sounds like the guy that was in my band class who never knew any notes. You are a complete fool or are deaf think this is good. I have only played the baritone for a year, and i know this is terrible -_-

  • he tryin' to play like tuba?

  • Hey, I've been playing euphonium for 50 years, and this kid is pretty spectacular. It may not be the traditional stuff you all are used to hearing (Childs, Bowman, etc), but it does show a technical mastery of the instrument, that, if directed properly, will lead to a true master of the euphonium.

  • I don't get what is so amazing about this...

  • To say this is good is an opinion. I feel apalled by this garbage though. Don't bother responding to this comment, nothing will make me come back to this page. Nothing.

  • sounds a lot like one of Nat McIntosh's solos.................... impressive nonetheless tho

  • What's up with all the dislikes? Young musician doing a really fine job on original music, what's wrong with that?

  • @sharkbear not original. it's a solo sousaphone piece by Nat McIntosh

  • @sharkbear what's wrong with it is that he ripped it off this guy on sousaphone. watch?v=MypmT0kwBR0

  • @EpicPhalure I went and checked the video out, because i was wondering why he never showed the full range of the euphonium... and then I saw the video of the Tuba player playing the same song... the exact same song and it grooved better...

  • @sharkbear well... other than the fact that this isn't an original piece. It's Warrior Comes To Play by the Youngblood Brass Band's former sousaphone

  • What make of euphonium is that?

It doesn't look like besson, willson, yamaha, or a king.....

  • @squiresuzuki he's playing a York Eminence in this video. its pretty much the rival of the Besson Prestige.

  • @squiresuzuki York. my guess the York Eminence

  • my euph has 4 valves not sure if its cuz mine is custom or not idk. but nice job i could barely play multiphonics on mine very hard but you did really nice on that.

  • @duillana His euphonium also has four valves. The fourth valve is on the back side where his left hand is. This type of euphonium is called a compensating euphonium.

  • @1dlegend thats not a fourth valve, thats a spit drainer -w-|| i know coz ive played it for 3 years ive played one with four valves and 3 -w-||

  • @marthxion1 the fourth valve is on the side. i have been playing a true euphonium for several year. it's a compensating system that the fourth valve on the side pitches the horn in F instead of Bb.

  • @marktremontirules1

Many, but certainly not all 4-valve euphoniums with a side-mounted 4th valve are compensating. Some, like the Yamaha 321, are not. I have owned a 4-valve compensating euphonium for 40 years. I think a 3-valve compensating euphonium is the better choice for most players.

  • @gregsgoatfarm yeah i knew that not all side 4ths are compensating, i just didn't feel like getting in specifics. plus, the 321 does not have a side 4th. it's a top system.

  • @duillana 4th valve euphos are normal. not custom at all actually.

  • It's basically just Fnugg on euph....

  • THIS IS AWESOME !!!! I PLAY BARITONE, AND THIS AWESOME !!!! 8DDDD

  • This actually sound gay...

  • ill never be that good :'(

  • All I gotta say is get that damn mic away from the clapping crowd and closer to him.

  • waste of time

  • this is poop. id like to see him actually PLAY something

  • You guys gotta remember that the mic is directly inside his bell, so its going to sound weird regardless. If the mic was out closer to audience i'm sure this would sound much better.

  • 2 words....Hell no.

  • the funny thing is that the kid actually didn't make this piece. It was written by Nat McIntosh, a sousaphone player in the Dallas Brass, more than 2 years before this video and he was actually playing it in many high schools with the group on tour.

The kid probably thought it was cool and got into the TED thing cause his dad had connections or something.

  • Haters gonna hate.

  • you suck if you want to do that just beatbox you should just quit i hate you

  • I play euphonium and this sounds cool and all but honestly its kind of disturbing. The euphonium is supposed to be a beautiful instrument not some kind of rap synthesizer. I think he is very talented but should focus more on REAL music. (and on looking out for me cause i plan on moving up the scoreboard real soon!)

  • Matt, please give the euphonium its old voice back! Please!

  • This is actually somewhat disturbing. It does not sound good.

  • just horrible and i play baritone....one big slap at every low brass player

  • Maby its hard to play that, i respect.. But it's awful to hear, sounds horrible!! It doesn't sound to me like he have been practicing alot

  • Maby its hard to play that, i respect.. Beut it's awful to hear, sounds horrible!!

  • Absolutely love Matt White! Awesome player and an awesome guy I hear. Great playing, and I'm not sure if many people know, I think he recently won the soloist award in the University Brass Band championships!! Also, love his instrument!

  • Absolutely love Matt White! Awesome player and an awesome guy I hear. Great playing, and I'm not sure if many people know, I think he recently won the soloist award in the University Brass Band championships!!

  • just saw him last night, amazing!

  • Sexy valves!!!! :P

  • that can break any type of euphonium how do i know my teaches friend did this exact same thing trust me DONT DO THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @musicmaster250 I don't know what kind if euphonium you play, but I've NEVER seen somebody break an instrument via multi phonics. Please tell me how this is possible.

  • ... how is that possable? lol

  • Multiphonics isn't a new technique.

  • he copies the dallas brass sousaphon-solo!

    look at --> "tuba beatbox"

  • This guy is singing and playing at the same time. If you don't know anything about singing and playing at the same time look up fnugg by Oystein Baadsvik, he is a world famous tuba soloist, and he started this type of playing. It is hard to do because it takes a lot of technique. I know this because I met Oystein and asked him to play it, and he mentioned he would try, but couldn't promise because it took a lot for him to play since he was older now. He did play it and it was phenomenal!

  • @iplayonteetertotters if you do look up Fnugg obviously it is much better, but you can kind of realize this kid has talent. It takes a lot of air and practice to do this!

  • This video is not impressive at all. Multiphonics can be cool, but not like that. This is so easy a person playing Euphonium for like 2 years could do it.

  • @kyleguyhighspeed I would like to know what kind of people you hang out with. Multi phonics are hard. Granted his open intervals aren't always dead in tune, but they aren't bad and its hard to accurately play one pitch and sing another because of the way the body and instruements work. I've never met a euphonium player who can do that, let alone after 2 years...

  • @SeoulLegacy It just sounds bad. It is not good at all. I could do multiphonics fairly well withing 2 years of learning. How long have you been playing? How many years of musical experience do you have exactly to be telling me all this?

  • @kyleguyhighspeed First of all, let me clear something up. I don't claim to be the best at anything. I have been playing now 14 years on various low brass instruments (major on trombone) and I'm an education and performance double major with a concentration in brass studies. I also happen to take trombone from a man regarded as one of the best bone players in the world. I'm not perfect, but I do know a thing or two...

  • @SeoulLegacy Oh, I never said you're the best. I don't only play Euphonium either. I play all the major brass instruments, alto sax, tenor sax, some percussion, etc. I too have taken lessons from some top players. I have also played with some great groups out there. I've played with some military bands, being in the Army got me there. This is not about you or me, this was about this kid. So you started playing when you were 7 then?

  • @kyleguyhighspeed I didn't mean for you to think that you said I was the best. Sorry. I just wanted to let you know that I'm not trying to be a cocky SOB. I'm just curious as to who you've met that can do this stuff after 2 years. And no, I've been taking for 12 ish years. I miscounted the first time. My bad.

  • @SeoulLegacy I could do that in around 2 years of playing along with about half my section in Jr High.

It's really no big deal. Some people got it and some people just have to work at it longer.

  • @kyleguyhighspeed emphasize the word,"fairly". Your's is probably a lot worse.

  • @SuperShortlife And you're commenting why???

  • @kyleguyhighspeed Quit runnin your mouth. I play Euphonium and he wasn't tellin you anything he was just proving his epic dominance over you. : | This is my serious face . . . When you post this kind of awesomeness you get back to us. Period.

  • @kyleguyhighspeed What's wrong with having fun? There's too many staunch musicians out there that all play the same boring stuff. Glad someone is switching things up and breathing new life into you old farts.

  • I'm in high school and I play both the euphonium and baritone and I really don't like this "hip hop vocal" piece. If you are going to play this instrument I say play it right because that sounds horrible to me. Also I play the euphonium on 3 when there is 4 so it doesn't matter.

  • not a euphonium! baritone only has three valves euphonium has four and they are bigger than that, not by much though

  • i think its the other way orund smart one!

  • i think its the other way around smart one!

  • @5702011164 Euphoniums have 3 or 4 valves (in some cases 5). It is not uncommon for a euphonium to have three valves. It IS a euphonium. Please do some research before commenting like a retard...

  • @ShazibElahi Well the Euphonium seen here is a 4 valve and it's a compensating Euphonium. There are also double bell Euphoniums too. Compensating Euphoniums with the 4th valve on the side are in my opinion better. The left index finger on the 4th valve works much better than the pinky. Most pro euph players like David Childs, Steven Mead, Brian Bowman and Derick Kane use the compensating Euphoniums.

  • @kyleguyhighspeed Oooh you are right I didn't see the 4th valve on the side....

Yeah I've seen a lot of double bell euphoniums on Ebay.

  • I'm not gonna lie. You've got to be good to play something like that on Euphonium so congrats but i didn't like it. The range is just too low for the instrument and i think it would just sound better on a tuba.

  • I really wish they would give euphoniums the melody more often

  • i really hate it. not his playing. he is quite good, but i hate the peice itself. the sound affects make it rather annoying and it sounds as if somebody is just messing around with a euphonium.

    but he seems overall good.

  • ja for multi-phonics!

  • A little too fast in my opinion, but other then that a solid performance. It's a lot harder to do multiphonics like that on a euphonium because it's tiny mouthpiece and bore.

  • as a euph player myself..gota love this! although not your traditional euph sound and not exactly a "new" technique, its something that is really starting to take more center stage..different way to get an audience's attention! awesome!

  • Amazing player, and an amazing guy too, easily the next David Child.

  • @MrXeyonte no where close to being the next david childs

  • Where can i find a transcription of this song?? Someone help please!

  • I have gotten to know all four of the Sotto Voce quartet. I can tell you for certain that they would be pleased that their music is getting out. Nat's a great player, and this kid's a prodigy.

  • @somenextguy22 Dont give me that shit, trying to use big words to make urself look smart. You think this is harmony? Harmony is meant to go with melody. I am not finding melody here...

oh fyi I am a musician and study under two world class teachers and make over $400 per gig.

  • Comment removed

  • Is like all of this pedal tones? I'm pretty sure hes playing in the same octave of the original tuba version

  • lol, completely copied version

  • what a waste of such a fine instrument, espeically a York, hot canary is a good song, but this is nonsense

  • You FAIL

  • @THEIOIzWOMBATz

can you play the song? dont trash this kid he worked his but off and it songs good

  • I love the euphonium, but I wanna hear some more sustained notes and tone in the middle range a euphonium is a beautiful instrument, this is dopee tho

  • multi phonics isnt new

    info fail

  • All instruments with a bass sound are always underappreciated people need to pay more fucking attention

  • @somenextguy22 that's because they sound like shit compared to other instruments.

  • @Jonnyplatt94 lmaoo bro obviously your a not a musician an if you are give up now cause cause you dont know fucking shit about harmony

  • @somenextguy22 I totally agree. The other instruments couldn't be there without us. We are THE BASE. They need us to keep THE BEAT. Screw the people who think we aren't important, because we're the MOST important. :)

  • dude you are incredible! whats the name of this piece!?!

  • anybody know the name of this piece of music? thanks

  • @MrSURESHOT117 yeah, its easy to reach them, but (just like tuba) to play them smooth and connected, to make them sound like every other note, is not. Your arrogance in saying it would be "extremely easy" begs the question: Why don't you find a Comp Euph, make your own video, and back up your cocky statements. Otherwise, quit talking down about other musicians.

  • i am learning this song too. its actualy pretty easy to play. i just need some practise and ill be playin it ;)

  • @noobmaniac2 no one cares. no need to tell us.

  • My band teacher would skin me if he saw my play mu Euph like this, but keep rocking man!

  • @exla00Z

Exactly how gay is fuk? Really, I'd love to know, I hear that phrase used alot, but I still can't grasp that concept. Also, what does shit sound like? Does it make sounds? If it sounds like this guy, maybe I should listen more often. Ignorant swearing at random makes you sound REALY inteligent you know that?

  • @lbrown21494 Not to rain on your parade but you spelled "REALY" wrong. It is spelled "really".

    Just saying.

  • cool. almost like beat boxing

  • Wow, very nice. And, it's on a Besson. AWESOME!

  • @aeroplano111 its a york. just though id say

  • this dude rules!.....

  • what song is this???

  • Very good multiphonics, but the sousa player from dallas brass had practically the same exact arrangement.

  • this sounds like shit he plays good buut the sng is gay as fuk

  • WTF? was the last part?!?!?!?!

  • I don't get it.

  • Amazing.

  • The ending made my dog pee on the floor

  • @rbrrosebitrose acctually if he even made that noise it wouldnt make him pee it would make him poop

  • so what if he is playing the instrument a non-traditional way? that doesn't make it any less musical than the more common way of playing the instrument. the possibilities aren't limited to a certain scope.

  • lol watching this makes me low on breath

    im a noob

  • Just a little note to all the detracters of this young musicians talents.

Matthew won the Best Soloist award at this years Brass in Concert in Gateshead.

  • @TEDtalksDirector "a wild new vocal technique" as stated in the description. There is nothing new about multiphonics on brass horns. And if you're referring to any other vocal addition in the piece, those also have been known on brass instruments, especially tenor brass, like the euphonium, and lower brass, like the bigger tuba. Have a nice evening.

  • Haha... it's silly to say that this is a disgrace to the euphonium... it doesn't take away from the beautiful sounds that it's capable of producing.. it merely portrays a different way that the horn could be used... in this way is it not a positive statement about the euphonium because it highlights its versatility?

  • umm... this is a musicality i dont want to explore...

  • Well this song is called "Warrior Comes Out To Play"

It was written by Nat Macintosh, who is the sousaphone player from both Youngblood Brass Band and Dallas Brass.

  • this does not sound very musical your just beat boxing

  • and this guy goes to Oxford.....

  • Those people who feel he is disgracing the euphonium are elitists. Isn't music all about creativity? This is just his take on euphonium, and if it's entertaining it doesn't matter. I'd like to see you do that. Great job man.

  • No this isn't the beautiful sound euphoniums are capable of but its show amazing control. I'm sure that when he applies himself to more classical pieces that control and range transfers over

  • Enjoyed it!!

People you're missing the point ... it's just a bit of fun, and very well done too.

I'm a proffesional Euph player in case anyone thinks I dont have a clue what I'm talking about, and would just say 'lighten up everyone'.

Would like to hear him play a more 'traditional' piece, bet he's great at that as well!!!

    Happy Christmas All :-)

  • WTH He Stole this from Nat McIntosh of the Dallas Brass...

  • i cant understand why so many people dislike this

i will admit thought its not my cup of tea

but if you think about it, a lot of great musicians did odd, wacky, unusual things. similar to this person many people frowned uppon it. i say way to go for making a unique sound with the instrument.

  • wow go die you justin bieber beat making faggot

  • dont be so closed minded people! yes the euphonium has beautiful sound but this generation is all about pushing limits and experimenting and finding new things. kudos to him for finding new entertainment ways for this instrument!

  • Okay... its is pretty impressive that he can reach those low ass notes and make the euphonium sound like a Tuba having a seizure... but it lacks the good sound euphonium is famous for... I mean, Euphonium does mean good sound, and this guy is just stepping all over that definition... still, it takes some sense of skill to do that... so, good job man!!!

  • idk Why people dont like this...Im a euph player and I know this takes alot of practice and skill its not a disgrace in any way I hope to learn this peice eventually

  • @euphominion its annoying and hes making alot of mistakes also the "ewweww" is not needed

  • This is not what a euphonium's supposed to sound like.As a fellow euphonium player he need to put the original parts back because I think he is using a tuba mouth piece
