It really depends on what the format is. If it's a iso or cso file than you just put it into your psp via computer. If it's a rar file use either winrar (for windows) or unrarx (for mac)

I don't know what custom firmware is. Firmware is I guess the version of your psp. And you need version 3.71 to get free psp games.
