Imo, it's too simplistic to assert that modern Ashkenazim are not 'real' Jews. From my understanding, 10-15% of modern Ashke. are genetically descended from SouthEastern European fathers (which could have been Khazar ancestors that co-opted Judaism from original Semitic Israelites), but that was typical in ancient crossroad areas.
