@hilaryhahn210 Hey, need to tell you something. Some guy that does tutorial clips thought that when you left a comment on one of his videos that you were Hilary, and he even tweeted about it!
It looks like a good ribbon mic that's too close; an appropriate compromise because of the room. She's in the corner, against glass and a hard floor. The sound reflections from those surfaces would probably arrive at the mic at such a time, and it sufficient amplitude, as to interfere. It also appears this is the only mic, so there's no "room" to the recording. After all that, post processing and compression are overdone.
I wonder if Hahn used some other violin in this video because it doesn't look like her Vuillaume, and also it sounds rather like a new violin than the Vuillaume.
There are other great violinists, but Hilary has to be one of the most accurate in intonation. She sings such sweet duets on her violin. I was listening to her Paganini double harmonics...awesome and sweet. Her harmonics were so good they sounded like whistling...more than I can say for Perlman.
The only one revision that Hillary and all musicians should take into account before they release a single soundbite through the media is to MUTE all exaggerated distortion and overtones through electronic media. Did you hear the sound of her mega-million-dollar violin, (whether of Strad of Guaneri)? The sawtooth wave was pathetically distorted beyond words, creating a listening fatigue where the listener is glad its over. Hillary's amazing sound deserves so much more! She's the best today!
@utopiandesign Well, actually her violin is a Vuillaume, which is a copy of Paganini's Cannone. And the sound is probably something she can't control unless she becomes a diva and starts barking orders for everyone to accommodate the audio everywhere she goes; I seriously doubt she'd put anyone through that, so, for now we'll take the passively shoddy TV audio.
@chrismcgovernmusic Thanks bro for the update. My experience with the common sound man is to sit down with him or her and test the tone before it is broadcast abroad. This way, you can control the overall tone before the recording begins. And I assure you, bro, that the results will deliver many hardcore pop listeners to give heed to the superior sound of the master artists in music. OK?
@utopiandesign Ok, bro, no need to get so bro-y. Geez! is it really that bad sounding? I don't hear any distortion. Watch her other local news appearance on the Detroit clip and see if you feel the same way.
@utopiandesign This phenomenon (of the poor soundman/person) is common. Most folks like them think the fiddle is "loud" enough - and doesn't need special treatment. Good observation!
@freqtrav I'm sure if Hilary had actually had anything to do with signing autographs, she would have stayed until the last autograph was signed. I mean, that's the impression I get from watching her Youtube vids, that she cares very much about her fans.
@rogersmr5 It probably is either the venue calling the shots on that or possibly a management or record label involvement issue that creates these situations with the signing procedures, and it'd be great if Hilary could override that, but even she can't control everything.
But there was a show I went to (Ravinia) where we were lined up and she actually came face to face with us, shook our hands and spoke to us. It was really cool!
@chrismcgovernmusic Well, OK, I take back the "disrespect" and "ass" comments - mia culpa. But yes, I expect people that host morning shows to know "anything" about "classical" music, or anything else about a guest they host. Are you saying that people that host morning shows are... what? She held her composure well I thought and protected him in his ignorance. Thanks for the insight Hilary.
@fiddlraz Plus they are working with time limitations on TV as well. When she did Conan, she didn't get to say very much, but it was nice that she got to say something, especially since musical guests don;t even normally get speaking segments on late-night talk shows.
@chrismcgovernmusic Good point Chris. But they sure love to hear from Willie Nelson and Madonna don't they? Maybe the limitations are the hosts' rather than the format, as you point out. Or is that where the format came from? At least no one brought up Muslims on airplanes and lost their job with a symphony, or something ridiculous :)
@fiddlraz The host was like most of the employees in Dallas Symphony hall - so I have bad memories about that performance. Don´t mess with TX! Because I observed some (discriminating) things during her signing which I never experienced in the US before, I wrote letters both to Hilary herself and to DSO. The answer I got from DSO was that Hilary ordered these things herself and was responsible for them. From her I received no answer up to this day. Anyway my feeling is that she was not liable.
@chrismcgovernmusic Part 1: As wrote in my other answers to you about the problem of intermission-signing most of in this case young students miss the 2nd part of the performance because the (rude) staff let people signing first who bought something from the DSO shop. So they built 2 lines like Eco and First in an airport. The kids and students who just wanted to sign their toys and sheet music couldn´t get in contact to Hilary before all other people got signed their bought things.
@chrismcgovernmusic Pt 2: I don´t think that a classical performance has to be commercial like this. A young latina girl who didn´t want to miss the 2nd part and changed to first class signing was send back in an unacceptable way. I wrote several mails to the administration of DSO but I got after weeks just the answer that Hilary herself ordered that kind of signing which I couldn´t believe. Hilarys management promised me to send her my comments but without any success of an answer.
@robertslistening It's because they have the feminine touch.

I think I can somewhat explain the sound issue.

Good question, she was using a different one several times last year, so, could be.

Or is that just me?

I like Julia Fischer also.

@fiddlraz I didn't think he was disrespectful at all, but you can't expect people that host morning shows to know anything about classical music.

@fiddlraz Just saying that there's lots of people that are simply not well-versed in classical music, and he very well could be one of them.
