Ahhh I remember that day very well, I was walking across the galley and a force took me and slammed me against the wall... of course there was puking here and there but hey, gotta live a little :D
I know the Hawk, I was on your sister ship CV64. You guys were great, anytime the Hawk said they would show up to relieve us, they did. The Hawk did their job and a good ship.
Those waves even make me cringe, WOW, what a pounding.
I was on the Kitty Hawk from 1980-1984 and worked in the Cat Shop with all the airdales. I saw water coming over the bow when we were on West Pac. This video brings back some fun memories!!! Thanks for posting...
@culinarycop I was on Connie and like I stated before, you and we were on Great Ships. What a pounding. You WestPac was OVER FUN. When I returned to Colorado, after getting out of the Navy, they didn't believe my stories, no worries, my best friend also went there on CVN65 and he said what ever I said was true.
What happens in Phillipines is true and doesn't stay :-)
Oh and my berthing was on the 03 level too; right below where the Alert 5 F14s were parked with their engines idling. Try getting to sleep with that on your roof. And when we were inport in hot-ass Singapore the sun turned the coop into a 100 degree oven; AC be damned.
I was on the Carl Vinson in the Bering Sea back in '89 when a wave broke over the bow so hard that it caved in the steel plates that enclose the forcastle. The impact was felt throughout the ship. People thought we hit a whale. There's a berthing compartment right under the front edge of the flight deck; that's got to be the worst one on the boat because of the bow pitching up and down in rough seas. That or the junior officer staterooms right under the waist cats.
@MadTarnsman i was on that ship for a few of those fires... i think it was the one in the 2 main mm that had all of us at GQ ready to start fighting this fire (mind you, i was part of the air wing and even we were suiting up to help fight it.) good times, though. haha
We ran into rough seas like this when we went back to San Diego after an overhaul in Bremerton. Had family and such on board moving everyone back home from a year in dry dock. Early 80's and it was just like this except we had the flight deck and hanger bay full of cars, trucks, RV's, boats you name it. Quite a trip.
meh... the crew chief of the helicopter was probably tired of cleaning her down manually anyway, might as well let mother nature help with the washing duties.
Ahhh...the Shitty Kitty....the USS Zippo....I was on the Oriskany back in the day, CV-34 and we caught fire almost as much as this thing did.....
..and in weather like this, they get all the aircraft below that they can, "hurricane tie downs" are used, 15 tie down chains and as soon as possible, fresh water flush and wash of all aircraft. There goes your shower for tonight!
@ps3bigboy320 you are correct, why the fuck would they care, just print more money out of thin air from the federal reserve criminals and get another free one
Are you stupid or something they just wash the salt water of after... those planes gonna be used in the militery for many years in future,, and they will hold longer than your car ´?
Wow... I'm assuming the aircraft are tied very securely to the deck? But also, isn't sea water very corrosive to whatever they make jets and helicopters out of?
@magnum222ish It goes "SPLASH" and sinks to the bottom never to be seen again. Then I suppose some poor brown shirt gets reamed for not properly securing his jet. Then..... Paperwork.
Those are big waves. For those who don't know, the flight deck of an aircraft carrier is between 60 and 70 feet above the water.
In 1969 we hit one like that crossing the Atlantic. Water over the flight deck - many times an hour. USS Independence. I was in VAH 10. A-3's. I wonder if there is anyone else who remembers that cruise?
Somehow if this was Kitty Hawk's last trip before being decommissioned, where was she headed on this vid? I know she was based in Yokosuka, Japan during her active duty.
I still can't believe they decommissioned my boat. I brought her out of SLEP, and that doesn't seem so long ago. I would have thought she had more years than they gave her.
Omg, history! FML, I remember sitting in the admin office trying too keep what was called yesterday's breakfast down, it was so rocky, all the chairs kept rolling back and forth. @nowhereman841 is it possible for the waves to overturn such as this ship. And what is the crew doing during rough periods stay indoor and just chill?
@hanstinger There is never a time to sit indoors and chill. What you dont see is under the flight deck we store the planes it is just one giant hanger so people are always working on aircraft.
@bluefish393 Oh haha I see. I thought in this kind of weather the crew man just sit back and enjoy the ride while the ship ride through the storm. Thanks for answering
@robertabramson Personally i would have taken more care of the chopper, cant see it well but it seems that the water must have entered just everywhere! it is a Seahawk or a Sea King?
@69BlueL88 That is 60 ft from waters edge to the top of the flight deck. I should know. I fell from the side of this ship 1986 when it was in SRA in Sand Diego. We were cleaning the anchor and painting it. My Jacob's ladder broke and I fell 45 ft in to the water. That day sucked. Luck me we were in port. I broke my arm and 3 rib.
@johnsa22 Cool, I'm from Western Australia. By the way, what do you do when an F-18 or any other plane gets that much salt water on it? Do you just rinse it down or do you have to pull all the panels back and get rid of all water and salt. I'm around boats a lot and it never ceases to amaze me just how many things get corroded and how quickly.

It's easy to forget when looking at their incredible size that even aircraft carriers are nothing but boats to an unforgiving sea.

to be breaking over the bow of an aircraft carrier? holy high waves, batman...

I broke my arm and 3 rib.

doesnt saltwater corrode these planes like no other?

Must be a rogue wave? The freeboard of an aircraft carrier must be at least 20m?

My Grandfather served on this ship :) makes me proud to see that a ship of this age can still take some abuse.

I would lol so hard if the jet tips over the edge
WastyWouterFTW 1 year ago
@WastyWouterFTW They are tied down to the deck.. They are literally part of the ship when they are tied down.

I did a coulpe of West Pac's on the Kitty in the 90's and we never had weather like that. I wonder where they were sailing?

@missilepatriots probably Japan.

@missilepatriots the ship was off the western coast of Australia when this was taken.

@jcadlols thats for sure, i realized this while i carried my inflatable boat several times on my car, even i was carefull enough...corrosion as hell
