James wanted to sound like Sean Harris From Diamond Head. That's why he sounds different than Kill em All. but after he listened to it a realized he really didn't sound like Sean, He changed his voice.
@acerex12 Dave stated, he never sang on a record before founding Megadeth... and watch at that tape's label, James is named as the (v)ocalist and Dave plays the lead guitar, which he does pretty good...
what happened back then is that ron felt he was being used by the rest of the band as a source of monetary supply for the band instead of being used as a member of the band,he had this all nice fancy equipment and garage. he quit metallica selling all of his equipment .
@metalhed1100 You do hear rhythm guitar, Dave and James used to play in the exact same tuning and the exact same notes, and wait for a solol you can hear it perfectly.
@OoberFuzz well if you actually new metallica history you would find that for a few live shows and a demo james only did vocals cuz he was uncomfortable with a guitar in 1981 some of their early shows i no my metallica history and theres some photos of james and dave and james only had a mic and dave had a guitar
@Simen113 It's James singing here. He wasn't interested in singing and playing guitar simultaneously. He doesn't play guitar on this demo tape. Dave never sang in Metallica.
@EvenL33tland No James Was singing only it is Dave Mustaine on Guitar. Dave Joined late Febuary 1982 and This was recorded 3/14/82 so I can see why it sounds horrible.
@mccommentary really? do you mean too inexperanced to sing and play guitar at the same time? because the first demo of this song he played guitar and bass, and the got that black dude to do the guitar solos for it.
james' voice makes me want to punch myself...hard.
but for u guys saying how his vocals sucked, well thats cuz he never even learned how to sing. he used to play drums, then lars got james and dave and ron, and lars took drums. james learned guitar from dave and then cliff and kirk, and taught himself how to sing afterwards. then after he killed his voice with "so what" like 1241234234years later, he ended up taking vocal lessons....and thats why he yodels now. :/

@WbCobain To paraphrase Dave himself: I was a really violent drunk. When I got into trouble, it was because of alcohol. But, Lars and James were playful drunks.

Amazing to think that this was played in a garage when nobody knew them. Then they went on to rule the world and play this song in front of millions. Ron McGovney's neighbors didn't know how lucky they were.

@SasquatchMan118 both are good. i prefered old kirk's solos over the new ones, the new ones are only wah wah bullshit. dave still has that old style i really like
Lloyd Grant Played before Dave! But Dave was and always will be the best guitarist for Metallica! Kirk is cool to, but dave is just best! and Cliff the Best Bass Player! Rip Cliff!
I could see someone saying that about their previous 2 albums before 'DM', I thought each had good tracks but can see it. However, if you thought their latest album is 'shit' then I'd advise you to get back to those Britney Spears and Jonas Brothers tracks you probably have on your ipod...
Death Magnetic wasnt really bad, as it was the whole band trying to hard to sound like they were all 25 again. It wasnt what it could have been because they were so focused on appeasing the fans and attempting thrash again. At that they failed, miserably.
WTF are you talking about? PERHAPS you can say that about ReLoad or St. Anger, but really even on those albums it was about doing whatever shit they felt right to them AT THAT TIME. How the hell can they be appeasing fans by 'attempting thrash again' when THEY PRETTY MUCH INVENTED THRASH WITH KILL 'EM ALL??? I happen to love Megadeth and thrash in general, but saying that Metallica failed on their last album because THEY RETURNED TO A STYLE THEY HELP DEFINE - WELL YOUR COMMENT FAILED, MISERABLY!
They 'helped to invent' it in the early 80s when they could because they were like 20, and there was dozens of thrash bands before they even recorded No Life Till Leather. The Big Four just popularized the genre they didnt start it. But back to the point. Death Magnetic is a tolerable album, a step up from the 90s and St Anger definitley, but its a clusterfuck of 50 year olds trying to sound 20 again. Its not going to happen, it cant happen, and it didnt happen. Please, be civil.
OK, I think I get it. Metallica at this point should be recording 'polka music', is that it? They are 50 and shouldn't even attempt to make an album like they have through their first 4. They should be doing Kenny G songs, right?
Why should their ages matter, I'd be pissed if they did another twangy ReLoad, the fact that they went back to their roots and recorded a more 'thrashy' album is great!
BTW, even at 50, they still kick ass. They are as sharp and musically proficient as ever.
Thats not what im saying at all, youre an idiot. Im going to cite everyones favorite band here as an exmaple: Megadeth, look at Endgame. Actually United Abominations was better so I should use that example, Dave is still making metal but hes not trying to relive the 80s. Metallica was trying to remake Master of Puppets. In Death Magnetic its not so much their age holding them back but the fact that theyre trying way to hard, and it shows.
OK I'm the idiot when you are the one here that is passing judgment as to what a band 'should' sound like? Good god you are making a fool of yourself trying to justify how Metallica is wrong in 'trying to relive the 80s'. They apparently must only make songs that blavaburnulots approves of...
You simply are trying to bash Metallica with whatever stick you can use to hit them with. They sound too young, do they? Well, if DM was too young, then I'll take them in diapers if it means no ReLoad2...
Pretty awesome they got the title for this from dawn of the dead!

This is pretty cool. Proves that every good band starts in a garage.

Even Mustaine has improved vastly, if u look at this demo and compare it with his later works. His solo here is not really good !

Lloyd Grant Played before Dave! But Dave was and always will be the best guitarist for Metallica! Kirk is cool to, but dave is just best! and Cliff the Best Bass Player! Rip Cliff!

lol, How far they've come, from a decent garage band to the biggest and (one of) the most influential Metal bands of all time.
James' voice REALLY improved over the course of ten years (1982 to 1992), where he was at his vocal peak (imo).

This is what Metallica is to me. Not power ballads, not bluesy shit, just plain old thrash with a real punk overtone.

@ JBPURCELL
Metallica was influenced by blues bands, you know? Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, even Judas Priest and Iron Maiden were heavily influenced by blues.
And this was even before their prog and hardcore punk influence that came from Cliff.
faceurhell 1 year ago
they were also influenced by the misfits
iamskilled5 1 year ago
That's my bad, blues wasn't the right word to describe their newer work. I think a better word is shit.
JBPURCELL 1 year ago
I could see someone saying that about their previous 2 albums before 'DM', I thought each had good tracks but can see it. However, if you thought their latest album is 'shit' then I'd advise you to get back to those Britney Spears and Jonas Brothers tracks you probably have on your ipod...

Nah, Death Magnetic was pretty good.
JBPURCELL 1 year ago 2
Death Magnetic wasnt really bad, as it was the whole band trying to hard to sound like they were all 25 again. It wasnt what it could have been because they were so focused on appeasing the fans and attempting thrash again. At that they failed, miserably.
blavaburnulots 1 year ago
CyberDeviant 1 year ago 2
They 'helped to invent' it in the early 80s when they could because they were like 20, and there was dozens of thrash bands before they even recorded No Life Till Leather. The Big Four just popularized the genre they didnt start it. But back to the point. Death Magnetic is a tolerable album, a step up from the 90s and St Anger definitley, but its a clusterfuck of 50 year olds trying to sound 20 again. Its not going to happen, it cant happen, and it didnt happen. Please, be civil.
blavaburnulots 1 year ago

In Death Magnetic its not so much their age holding them back but the fact that theyre trying way to hard, and it shows.
blavaburnulots 1 year ago
OK I'm the idiot when you are the one here that is passing judgment as to what a band 'should' sound like? Good god you are making a fool of yourself trying to justify how Metallica is wrong in 'trying to relive the 80s'. They apparently must only make songs that blavaburnulots approves of...
You simply are trying to bash Metallica with whatever stick you can use to hit them with. They sound too young, do they? Well, if DM was too young, then I'll take them in diapers if it means no ReLoad2...
