  • it works!!

  • I tried the denim method and it works

  • Gave new life to my Gillette Fusion Power blade! Going to keep on using! Thanks!

  • Tried this a few times and it doesn't work on any blade I used (including the expensive Gillette Fusion ones).

  • @WWYTD This works for most people... don't know why it doesn't work for you.

  • This works for me already since I put my set of knives in March 2009. I still use the same blades every day!

  • next time, Put on a shirt LOL!

  • Blue Jeans dude - been doing it for years with the Mach 3....10 times one way, 10 times the other.

  • @TBaker1964 I was interested to know how many shaves per cartridge are you getting when using this method? Thanks.

  • Hahahaha, wow what an einstein idea..

  • Gillette may have come up with a counter strike to this method. I bought a new Gillette ProGlide Power, I've used it and sharpened it for three months and guess what? The bleedin' thing's going RUSTY. I've never known a blade go rusty after they got rid of the old crappy razor blades. Wether or not it will fall apart in another month or two, but seeing it rusty makes me naturally want to change the blade. Maybe we should take the rusty blades back to the supermarket and demand a replacement.

  • thanks for telling us. Greatly appreciated.

  • Wow, amazing. I just tried this on dry skin! And it really works. Try it people. You wont regret it. Thanks so much for the tip sir.

Now please put on a shirt. Thanks! Lol

  • just tried it on a used schick disposbale razor it does not work

  • @mindmuscleman Let's use some logic. What are the possibilities? A) it doesn't work on 10 cent disposable blades. B) - what you may have ignored... you may be doing it wrong... It does work on expensive, fantastically great blades like Gillette Fusion and others where the multi-blades naturally guide you to rub the arm in the best angle. Single blades don't give you that clue. When rubbing the arm, hold the cheap unit with the handle parallel to the arm. It works on cheap Bics...

  • @terrypun That really isn't logic. People should stop using that word when they don't know what it means. glllll

  • did anybody tried this ? does it work ?

any way thanks u will save me bucket load of money

  • THIS IS FROM GILLETTE : " TAKE THIS VIDEO OFF , WE HAVE A LASER POINTED AT YOU FROM SPACE AS SOON AS YOU LEAVE YOUR HOUSE YOU'RE FRIED"

THIS IS NOT A JOKE THEY SAID THAT, I AM SIMPLY A MESSENGER

  • @aaronhare 0/10 obvious troll

  • @Ragamuffyn Not even a troll...just some guy joking around. You, on the other hand, may be a troll...or stupid...not sure...

  • Great advice! I would have never thought about doing this on my arm!. Razor blades are so expensive! The only low price razor blade online store out there is ZiloStore. Keep up the good work.

  • Great advice! I would have never thought about doing this on my arm!. Razor blades are so expensive! Keep up the good work.

  • does it work like the strap the barber uses for his straight blade?

  • Thanks, but did you have to tell us shirtless?

  • Cheers

  • I've been using the same blade since I got married June 11. This works.

  • So I tried this. My technique to see the difference. I used an old blade that I knew I had to throw out and tried to shave off half my mustache going upwards. I could feel the "knicks" and had to be careful not to cut myself. I tried this YT method with the same blade and did the other side. Smooth results and much quicker shave. Continued shaving and I could feel the improvements while shaving. Felt like a new blade minus the "gel" on the blade. Thanx!

  • thank you Sir, greetings from Spain

  • good stuff, will definately try it

  • @DolceGabbanaBYMAN It would work better

  • This is what youtube is ment for, I hope this works!! :D

  • most useful vid on youtube! Thanks sir!

  • are you supposed to do this when your arm is wet or dry?

  • @terrypun

I shave my face and head 3 times a week on the same blade and never cut myself. I think the new DE razors are made better than the ones our fathers used to use when they were young.

  • I found this video via Google after someone I know told me they do this and it works. I thought it was an old wive's tale. I guess not.

  • Perhaps it works, not because it sharpens the blade, but because the technique removes oils, skin, shaving cream, hair and other stuff from the blades??? Maybe it works the same way Razorpit does?

  • @theturtlesurfer I don't believe that.. I think that one of the blades edges warps microscopically, being raked back by shaving... pushing the blade in the opposite directions pops the warp back to normal.

  • @theturtlesurfer It is called honing and it works.

  • terrypun: "Good Luck."

    MichellePhan: "Good Luck."

  • @vihena Bahahaha! Oh my god I love you xD

  • that's smart! good for you, who knows how much money and resources you've saved with this discovery. A noble prize is on it's way!

  • i dunno at first i thought this was crazy but it actually works i was using my fusion blade for like 2 months n only changed it because i wanted the new proglide ones

  • Bravo!!!! You should patent it!

  • tried it. bullshit.

  • @skeletonbite Your arm is too soft

  • I always wondered why people complained about the lifespan of their cartridges, mine would last months and months. However, I shave my arms, and after each stroke one way, I would rub the blade reverse down to get the hair out. Who knew I was sharpening it!

  • Informative video. Thanks? I did it on a smooth leather belt and got even better results.

  • One word- unhygienic.

  • i think i saw this dude on 30 rock

  • And why wouldn't you do that still on the leather belt instead of your skin??

  • FAKE

  • PAN. CAMERA. DOWN. PLEASE.

  • This isn't really working for me. It's a bit better, but not a clean shave.

  • @Sirat1205 Buy the RazorPit, look it up on youtube...a great product

  • thank you :)

  • ooooh rub it BACKwards...

  • Quite interesting! Will test that with "El Fidel" Model of Raz*War (razwar.com) and see it works too (5 blades model, high quality, now available in US too). Other good tip for avoiding blade becoming dull too fast: using SHAVING OIL. Really the best discovery ever made by me for my own shaving.

  • or you could just get a sraight razor and it'll last you a lifetime.....

  • @DarkLordVincent You have to do the exact same thing with a straight razor...

  • @takumideshh exactly, but the shave will be better and it'd be a little weird to leave your son a mach3 that you used for 14 years straight before you got a new blade. lol

I'm a supporter of minimalism but I think this is a little to minimalistic for my liking heehee

  • Thumbs up if you came from Reddit today.

  • I appreciate the tip, and I understand the need for setting... But was being shirtless for thousands of people necessary in this vid?

  • @MrTwopercent like my grandpappy always said; if you got it, flaunt it.

  • @MrTwopercent Lol !!! :D

  • Thanks!

  • try using a safety razor....

  • This really works thanks man

  • I would replace the cartridges once a while thats a little overkill 22 months

  • Thanks. I'll try it.

  • I would like to think that you are just not "aware" of what a real good shave is... or that you have grown accustomed to bad shaves, thinking that they are normal...

  • Never thought to try stropping a razor cartridge like that. I already have strops for my knives, so I should probably be ashamed of myself. :)

  • go hardware store and buy honing compound or polishing compound with high grit.

    put on leather strop.

  • Kinda makes the special cartridge sharpener unnecessary. They sell that in Sweden, but this, obviously, is much simpler and less costly. Thanks for a great tip!

  • Comment removed

  • i tried this method to keep my box cuter sharp. It does not work. :( neither does my arm :(

  • @BrentCityProductions

Try a leather strop with compound. That *does* work on blades.

  • @BrentCityProductions

Do you use your box cutter to shave your face or open boxes? Because we're talking about two entirely different materials here. Facial hair is extremely soft compared to cutting WOOD FIBER.

  • @Hardwyre oh I use a box cutter to shave my face, but when i try this method of sharpening i always wind up in the hospital :(

  • @Hardwyre wrong, human hair is extremely strong, it wears down a 4 blades in about 30 uses, considering how tiny hair , if compared to the same size wood human hair comes up to be thicker. I saw an example of this in How its made "blades".

  • "Your arm is made of something like leather." ... actually your arm IS leather. :)

  • @Hardwyre

Leather's a *little* different. 'Cept for, maybe, people who spend lots of time baking themselves in the sun. Then they definitely are leather. LOL

  • That is nice. How it works, though, like stroking the forearm, has more to do with straightening out the microscopic edge warping that occurs with hard shaving. It is honing the edge. That is, of course, my theory. Good luck

  • @terrypun No, it's not. Unless your arm is "hard" (not a good word, but can't think of anything else) like cowhide/leather.

A honing requires a stone, which is called a whetstone or simply a hone in some circles. To "strop" is to do what you are TRYING to achieve: re-aligning the molecules on the edge of the blade so that it is not curved to one side or the other and is instead perfectly straight.

    See here: shaveblog. com/post/1601732459/lifehacker-you-suck-at-shaving-tips

  • @terrypun Thanks man, you've just saved me £20! That's I was thinking to spend on the Razorpit product, which works in exactly the way you're using your arm.

  • @terrypun Yeah. It's done that way with straight razors as well. A quick way to strop straight razors is to use the palm of your hand. Not a good idea for beginners!

  • nice, i got this holder/bpx called a razorpit, workes the same way as u describe, its a seliicone material and each time u have shaved u put a small amount of foam on the box and do the strokes a few times, this helps to clean the small hair and soap particles of the razor blade, and make it last.

  • Yes this method does work, and it needs to do considering the price of these blades. Big money saver.

  • After using my Gillette Fusion cartridge for 30 months now, I have found it necessary to use this arm rubbing technique almost with every use for the last few weeks. Today, I almost gave up on it, but I tried rubbing it on a pair of blue jeans as suggested by a different YouTube video. Rubbed it backwards on the denim about ten inches about ten times, and the blade then worked just like new again. Now will I be able to my arm to recondition it again, time will tell.

  • @terrypun When the blue jean doesn't work well, try concrete!! lol Thanks for the tip:)

  • @woodrobin Maybe so, but I shutter with the horrible memories of using "safety" razors 40 years ago. They were not safe and not a pleasure to use for me and they were abandoned without remorse by the shaving public. Blades like Gillette Fusion are a shaving delight. This video's purpose is to promote an ultra simple way to recondition seemingly exhausted blades.

  • @terrypun To each his own. I learned to shave using cartridge razors like the Fusion, and have found that I get better and more comfortable shaves from an old-school safety razor. The next time a blade is starting to dull, I'll try your technique. It should work as well with a safety razor blade. Cartridge blades are made as double edge blades that are then split lengthwise and fitted in the cartridge housing, so one type should recondition as well as the other.

  • @woodrobin but the blade on a safety razor is at a different angle it will cut your arm off!

  • @zog97xy That makes no sense. Are you thinking of a straight razor? The method @terrypun describes involves having the edge facing away from the direction you're moving. You can't cut yourself that way, even with a straight, so still it makes no sense. Also, Fusion is a safety razor. The main difference is in having the proprietary cartridge top instead of putting any brand of blade into a built-in top.

  • @terrypun Safety razor handles and blades vary considerably in quality and "aggressiveness". An experienced wet-shaver with a fairly coarse, dense beard may demand a relatively aggressive blade and a comb-headed handle, whereas a beginner with a lighter beard may want to start fairly tame and work up to their comfort level if they feel they need a closer shave. The reviews on Badger & Blade led me to get my first safety razor setup, and I couldn't be happier: no nicks, baby-butt-smooth shave.

  • Yay another recession money saving tip. Nice!

  • damn, thanks for the tip - this is the bomb.

  • hmm sounds cool, hmm i wonder if it works doing that on your underarm instead like you do as i have a hairy arm :)

  • I just shaved with a Fusion blade. My wife gets them for me at £10 ( UK 10 pounds = USA around 13 Dollars ) for 5 blades. Now these manufacturers are making megga bucks as they must only cost a few pennies to make. I shave daily and get around 2 weeks per cartridge. I just watched you and im'e going to try it. THANKS FOR THE TIP !

  • @GrandadSue Hey I use Mach 3's only. Btw, another thing is that the little 'gel strip' on razors are a rip-off.

  • We are told the Gel strip turns from Blue to White and when its gone white , the blades are shot. I have been trying out the arm honing method and can confirm it does work but only for a short while. After the first honing it needs a quick 'arm hone' about once every 3 shaves. Now I find I no longer get little cuts or nicks but after arm honing about 6 times the blade no longer gives a close enough shave to my preference. Having said that , it's probably good 4 most people. Savings worth it.

  • Well, I could certainly use the money for other things. I don't need to shave that ofte though, but I'll try this out when my razor is starting to wear out!

  • A much better way is to use jeans or vegetable tanned leather.

  • @death8796 Now why would vegetable tanned leather or blue jeans be a much better way than lifting your arm? So far my razor cartrage has lasted 30 months! What would be much better than that?

  • @terrypun Well it's probably not as convenient as your arm, but it'll generally give you a sharper edge, but what ever works for you.

Also- Look at Straight razors those thing last life times just by stropping.

  • @death8796 Straight razor!!! I do not have an internet name that includes the word "death" like you do... I'll stick with Gillette.

  • @terrypun What are you arguing about? I'm simply giving a suggestion.

  • @terrypun Straight razors are not dangerous. People shaved for hundreds of years with them without problems.

  • @death8796

actually straight razors need to be honed after a while... either by taking it to someone to have it honed or honing it yourself (a good hone isn't cheap and you need to get a lot of practice before you should shave with a self honed edge)

also stropping needs to be done on both sides using a material much stiffer than the skin on your forearm.. i have a feeling someone is switching terrypun's carts when he isn't looking

  • Wow, and I thought that my idea was good. I've found that shaving in the shower will give the blades a lifespan of about 3 months.

  • whaoh would have never thought of this on my own thanks for the really good tip, looks like we the the same razor too

  • Comment removed

  • Stropping a Disposable, neat.

  • @joshmiles09 Damn i have horrible typing skills! i meant to say that i got home from high school!

  • Was it necessary to go shirtless?

  • @joshmiles09 it was blatantly obvious he wasn't wearing a shirt in the thumbnail. If this kind of theme offends you, don't click on videos that feature that. and he already explained his shirt was off because he was about to shave.

  • @joshmiles09 Do you shave with your shirt on? Makes you clean alot of shirts i guess.

  • terrypun- i've tried this after watching your vid. it seems to work, quite well.

    THANKS!!!!!!

  • thank-you for posting this, I will try it.

  • how do i do this?

  • @tupacshakur5633 wrote: "how do i do this?"

Well now Tupacshakur5633, that's a real great question. The best thing to do is to watch the video, by clicking on it using the mouse on your computer. Observe what the man in the video does and listen to what he says. Afterwards, try to do what he did yourself. Just try that out and see if that helps you to do it. If it doesn't then please post back and we can give you some more advice to help you along. God bless to you. xx

  • dosnt it shave ur arms??

  • @thecastman97 Razors shave when you pull them down, not when you push them up... If you are shaving your arm, you are doing it all wrong.

  • @terrypun its done like that to clean the blades there is a sharpener you can buy that does the same thing.

  • @terrypun Why don't you listen to what he is saying you idot.

He is not shaving his arm, he is using a stropping-like action to

recondition the blade to extend its life.

  • Very cool! I'll try it.

    thxs

  • thanks terry, I will try it. I sure could do with saving some money on those expensive refills. Not to mention its better for the environment to not waste so much material.

  • @gettinghealthygirl Glad to help.

  • I find this hard to believe but will certainly try it. You seem genuine.

  • One Month of use with a Gilette Fusion..still as sharp as...

  • I wish you were MY dad.

  • I have a trick to make my razors last 2+ years. Dry the razor out after you use it. Water will dull the razor by causing it to oxidize on a microscopic level. Drying the razor will cause less oxidization and increase the life of the razor.

Google it if you don't believe me.

  • @Ar3s701 Well, some people have said this, but I know that my blades can foul in use, mid shave, and fixed with the forearm stoking technique, so what does that have to do with oxidization? Stainless blades, I'd guess, shouldn't foul in a week... If you are using hot air, it could be expanding the metal and straightening the micro edge warping, that causes, I think, the fouling of the blade... See if drying with cold air works as well...

  • @terrypun You're removing that layer of oxidation when you use your technique.

  • @JWFokker That may be true but tell me how a blade gets suddenly fouled in the middle of a shave and then gets restored almost instantly by rubbing it on a forearm? There has to be something other that a layer of oxidation that would foul a blade mid shave. An Iron blade wouldn't get rusty as you were shaving, only later. So how could a stainless steel blade edge oxidize in use? And if it were oxidized... how would a blow drying deoxidize it - after the fact? Can't be simply oxidation...

  • @terrypun It is simply oxidation, your blade will last much longer if you dry it asap after shaving as well.

  • @SoggySocksMcGinty Well, it that don't beat all... let us buy 3 Razor Gator tools

Only $6.00 plus S/H $1.99 and use them --- why? it only takes about 10 seconds to rejuvenate your razor using your forearm ... and it costs nothing ... no shipping and handling...

  • @terrypun This was meant as a reference to an old internet phenomenon, haha.

I actually plan on using this if it really works, thanks for this video.

  • Just tried and it seems to work. Thank you, also remove

the gel strip completely before doing this.

  • Does it work on a hairy arm or do I have to use a non-hairy part?

  • @daddymackdealcrack I use the hairy part of my forearm, but I am hardly very hairy. It may be a good thing to wash the razor with warm/hot water and also moisten your arm, although I am not sure they are important. The angle of the blade on your arm may be important if you use a cheap blade. Slide the blade backwards at the same angle as you would shave. In otherwords, keep the razor handle parallel to your arm. Let us know if it works well on the hairy part of the arm.

  • @terrypun Yes hairy arms work. Hahaha

  • If Obama got the Nobel, so should this guy.

  • @jihadsoup can he put a shirt on first? :)

  • Gillette will become bankrupt within the year. Good going.

  • Now if only i were not so damn groggy in the mornings that I would stop using this method backwards....

  • That's sick - that's so much money you have saved - good job sir

  • Great idea! I blogged about this and another method to share with my readers since we get the pricey razors free all the time. :)

  • OMG Thanks a lot sir!! Great tip, works great!!!!

  • It Worked! You're my hero Terry. I was about to throw away my one week old fusion proglide (almost $5) cartridge because it would tug my hair during shaving leading to nicks and a bloody shave. I used your technique and it worked. During these difficult times, you helped me save money. Thanks.

  • @noahpictures Great! Happy to help. Good luck, t.

  • Here is why it works. The cutting edge is very thin and curls as you use it. You are using the flexible surface of your arm to straighten the curved edge straight again.

  • @vanfarowe Yes, I completely believe that - no electron microscope evidence that I have seen, but that curling makes a lot of sense!

  • use a straight razor or safety razor if you are looking for a way out of the gillette owned world of razor blades.

  • @tk4227 I know there is some love of straight razors and satety razors by some men - probably more of a hobby thing than real comfort... Gillette Fusion blades are outrageously wonderful... smoothest shave that I ever had... probably worth 4 dollars a cartridge --- but I like the idea of using one cartridge for over 2 years instead of the 2 or 3 weeks use that I was getting before I discovered the forearm stropping technique.

  • In response to the last comment, just how dirty can your forearm be? I take a shower before shaving, and if you don't, wash your arm before treating your razor.

My blade is still going strong at 25 months old ! It seems to need to be treated twice a week and sometimes I rub it two or three sets of ten strokes. Probably, going to need a new one soon, but I'll try to go as long as I can before giving up.

  • Isnt it unhygeniec to shave with a razor that just went sliding up your arm?

  • @Question2, that's nonsense. There's bacteria all over your face anyway. What should one do, sterilise the face before shaving? The bacteria on your face and arm are considered to be normal and unharmful. If you cut yourself, you will get bacteria into your blood stream, no matter what. It gets cleared by the body's immune system. The normal bacteria on your skin is not virulent (i.e. harmful) anyway.

  • @drchessman

There are a lot of young people that are getting acne this way;)

  • I'm still not convinced razor blades are as expensive as everyone says. Maybe that's because I shave my whole head, so I subtract what I used to spend at the barber.

Anyhow, if there's one thing I hate it's shaving with a dull blade even for a second. I will try this tip.

If it saves me money, awesome.
