Even before the "Final Countdown" movie, there was a Japanese comics series titled "Time-Slip Senso (War)" about an entire nation of Japan slipped back into 1941! When Americans realized how advanced Japan was, they attacked first! So to end the war, Japan used the nuclear bomb.

ok am i getting this right, they are in the pacific, and they already found the Yamato, which sunk, and this Sub looks alot like an American WWII Class, are they fighting ghost ships? lol
I confirm! It's a very good story and as you said it's a kind of the japonese version of "the final countdown". But here, the manga can go more deeper than the american movie. Attention !it's not the fist épisode but it's already the third !
Advanced as it was it could not compete with numerical superiority not to mention her advanced weaponry could not be resupplied by that era technology armament.
All in all, siding with IJN was a bad move imo.
They knew IJN was wrong, they were told japan MUST lose the war to learn a lesson in humility and be reborn..and still they choose this?..hmm
@masterDevis even if they did that, modern rockets are made from special material to allow them such speedy flight, not to mention the complicated electronic guidance system without which no missile is worth squat - notice the pilots do EVADE some but are twarted by the heat-seeking tech in the end to which they have no answer.
Besides i was talking about the moral choice they made not the concept of fezability.
@cr4yv3n rightfully so your statement is clearly in line of what the creator of the anime intended it to be... It actually resonates the counter-attack from the anti-war elements of the Japanese media. There is a currently re -surging National feeling in some parts of the Japanese populace. Too bad they never knew how bloody cruel they were during the war. I'm a Filipino who read eyewitness accounts and other reliable data on unbiased books of how cruel the Empire of Japan was.
The point of this clip if you watched it completely is the difference of the current JMSDF and the IJN... JMSDF do not desire to attack the sub. They intended to evade the torpedo attacks but a CIC operator out of fear, accidentally fired the ASROC. watch the next part of the clip and you'll understand why. The first comment was concerning your initial statements which I agree on what you were saying.
@cr4yv3n well first off it is not fair to demand the Mirai crew to side with the U.S., do they want to see millions of compatriots die? No. Second as the XO said, Mirai's job (their only way of finding a meaning to their action really) is to prevent loss of human life, such as what they did on Guadacanal. This does not mean siding with anyone. Of course they fail rather horribly since history is not idle and cannot be "controlled".
@cr4yv3n Also, wouldn't call the IJN officer a lunatic. He's a man of 1940 and a visionary who's not bounded by either loyalty to imperial Japan nor "the future"/history. He is just using the situation and knowledge to achieve a better world according to his idea. I mean, if Mirai arrived before 1941, probably he would simply let Japan stay out of the Axis and secure the conquered land in Manchuria and China.
I noticed one thing that could have changed hhistory from that movie; the loss of the two japanese zeros by the two F-14's. Shouldn't that have caused the imperial task force to turn around when they noticed that two of their fighters did not return on their patrol, or some other decision?
hmm? the sub captain said 'faiya'(fire) and not 'houteh' shouldnt japanese in ww2 speak pure japanese and not engrish or something?just a thought came to me after seeing letters from iwo jima where they call their guns 'raiforu'
"That torpedo can seek, most have some kind of tiny vacuum tubes or something!", LOL, really wonder what going though their minds. If we encounter tech from the future would we be so flabbergasted?

kasusawa 2 years ago

no they traveld back in time to world war two

WWII class submarine never existed.
That seems to be a Gato Class submarine, due to the shape of the nose and 6 bow tubes.
And they were taken back in time, they didn't travel (aka didn't intentionally go back to WW2)

This series seems pretty good. At first I thought it would be a rip-off of that movie "The Final Countdown" bit it seems to be pretty unique.

Unless you made it to Germany, re-teach them about missile technology. then THEY could give you all the missiles you need!

@EarthForces I saw the whole anime - i meant the end of the series.
In the end the XO goes after this lunatic IJN officer who dreams of screwing up with history and the captain says something along the lines of:
"We'll side with the IJN for now but be ready to scuttle the ship if they try to take it' - not very far from fully siding with them.
Even if it would be "treason" by some i would have handed down the tech to the americans.

@EarthForces Just imagine how much their ( innevitable ) victory would have been hastened.
No island hoping as they would hit directly the croonies in Japan directly - those smug IJN guys you see in one episode scheming.
No nukes dropped either - since the campaign wouldn't have lasted out long enough for research to be completed.
I know it's an year old comment but i like to keep replies fresh ^^

Yeah, movies have a major drawback there, having to compress the story into the space of an hour to two hours.
