Looking good, How about an overhand throw with the blade backwards so the handle points up? I remember doing those when I was a kid at the rendezvous!
They are frontier style hand forged Hawks, that a local blacksmith, has made for me over the years. They are nothing special really juse standard issue.
They run about $25 apiece, and up.The only mod. that I do is shorten the handles about 2 1/2" so they rotate quicker, and from a shorter distance.

you cant soften it - make one out of a softer species of wood. An end cut of pine works well.
