Darnley was drinking with some Lords when they persuaded him to kill Rizzio. Lord Ruthven tried to stab Mary in the womb containing her baby James. Bothwell was found not guilty because Lord Lennox who accused him was warned not to enter Edinburgh. All the Lords were involved. Mary did not have a miscarriage but gave birth to stillborn twins. They were certainly Darnley`s.and at least 8 months gestation. Mary married Bothwell still in mourning dress for Darnley. Why did she marry? Fear.
@basingstokeborn You have to remember it was a mans world. Darnley was seriously considered when Elizabeth I was looking for a heir, but forfeited that when he married Mary. I have read that Darnley threw Mary down a set of stairs while heavily pregnant with their child who became James VI of Scotland. It's believed the Casket Letters are no more than forgeries and depending on which version is to be believed, Mary either married Bothwell under duress, or there was no marriage at all.
@SnowyOwl2000 There is no doubt Darnley was a very foolish and immature young man. He wound up the nobles by trying to re=establish catholicism.Agains the wishes of Mary. He criticised of all people James for having too much land. To Mary he was a real headache and was never by her side for consultation and to learn statecraft. She would not give him in these circumstances the `matrimonial crown` with the full power of a king. Rizzio did much of hes work which was why he was killed.
