I have stayed at Yurts in the Oregon State Park system. In Wallowa Lake State park the yurts are hard sided and very nice. At Umpqua State Park they have deluxe yurts which are canvass sided and have a 3/4 bath and kitchenette with heaters in the yurts. Oregon is noted for rain, and on the coast high winds, and Wallowa Lake for snow and they have stood up well. On the canvas sided yurt, though, you have to contend with noise so make sure you don't build too close to neighbors!
I've been studying natural building and just started looking at Yurts. Do those with interior walls have permanent exterior frames or can they be changed around at any time?
Well, permanent walls around the edges are usually with a permanent stick built yurt. However, if you are talking about the walls that are sectioning off bathrooms and such, then technically you could change them around if you wanted to, although it would be tedious. The walls for interior rooms must be free standing and supported by the floor and each other only. The same thing with a loft.
Heck, why worry about walls. Hanging partitions, or curtains to section of "rooms", would work better. You change the interior dimensions by just moving the curtain rod, super easy.
The shot near the beginning with the llamas is a Geodesic Dome, not a yurt.

I've never seen one up close, but it looks like anchoring and sealing is the key. I have lived in tents in the military, and remember this fact well!

What happens if there are strong winds? How much wind can they sustained? How do you get power in to these? How fireproof are they?
