The bugs in the ears part reminds me of a great movie based on the real journey of Burton & Speke to find the source of the Nile. I believe it was Speke who woke up with a large bug burrowing into his ear canal. Burton poured hot candle wax in the ear but it didn't help, so in massive pain Speke drove a knife into his own ear! Supposedly in real life the African bearers would laugh if Speke sneazed as it would whistle out his ear!
