@pandabearunite oh...so you already know that pennslyvania tornadoes are common. "were not in kansas anymore" its just a figure a speech right? surely the goodness you know that pennslyvania regulary sees twisters (pennslyvania sees as many twisters as kentucky does on a yearly average: 10). um mean greensburg, PA IS NOT A SPRINGFEILD, MASS. OR A SALT LAKE CITY,UTAH!
@pandabearunite just because tornadoes are more common in kansas than pennslyvania DOESNT MAKE PENNSLYVANIA A TOTAL STRANGER TO TORNADOES LIKE HAWAII, ALASKA, EUROPE, OR OREGON. Pennslyvania gets the same amount of twisters as Kentucky does!
You did a great job of recording this. Toward the end of your clip, you could see how "organized" the funnel was getting. In 1985, a family member's next-door neighbors were killed in a tornado in Butler County. The deceased lived in a brick home; my relatives in a mobile home. The brick-home owners died; my relatives' mobile home was untouched. So you were smart to retreat to the basement.
We had this same storm (CINCY) but, didn't get the tornado and man.. All I can say is this is incredible. I was flipping out when the clouds got dark at 2pm and it started to hail.. ha I was delivering pizza scared lol
This is great footage, this is actually my hometown. My parents actually saw the cone of the tornado. When you hear a tornado, it sounds like a freight train. And that sound is probably the worst kind of noise you could hear.
That's crazy! I live in Greensburg.. we got 2inch hail but I never saw the tornado. Thanks for sharing. I probably would have ran around in circles screaming and fainted... which is pretty much what I did when the hail started slamming us. :)
All I can say is " W O W "....Glad to see you came thru it okay. Lot's of homes did'nt fair so well. My bosses daughter lives in Irwin and they had quite a bit of damage.
Thanks for being brave enough to film...my ass would've been hiding!!
I have family back home in Pittsburgh and they live in the South Hills area. But my youngest brother told me all about the damages he saw this morning and the destruction this scarey tornado left behind in Irwin and around Greensburg. I live in TX now, which is "Tornado Alley" and I have yet to see a tornado like this here. And I know for a fact that Tornadoes are RARE in Pennsylvania so this had to have been quite a major scare to all who has seen it. Thank GOD it didn't last.
The "problem" with this storm is that the dark cloud masses surrounding the main funnel (mesocyclone) never wrapped completely around it, leaving it disorganized. A tighter wrapping would've probably caused a lengthy EF2 ground twister in residential areas, which at your filming distance would've thrown quite a bit of debris directly at you! Funnel on the edge - not so bad. Funnel in the middle - watch out!
As far as I know, only 5 people got cuts or scrapes from flying debris, but everyone else was ok. The tornado never landed near my house because we are in a valley, but there was damage on top of all the hills.
I had insulation in my yard from none of the houses near us. The crazy thing I saw was the pole vaulting mats from the high school track against the middle school cafeteria 500 yards away.
There was a better funnel before I could find my camera unfortunately. It got worse right when it went over us but I went downstairs when we heard the "train"
Great you filmed entire forming of the clouds into funnel cloud/pre-tornado!
Either that same one or one looking just like was first seen in Murrysville, near Penn Township line heading towards Harrison City/Irwin direction. Clockwise rotation with the same dark mass under... We were lucky -- We only got some hail.

I watched the roofs get ripped off on Fosterville. If you don't live in my neighborhood the cops stop you and try to arrest you. Its insaaaaane

The viral video was from just down the street. The audio is low because I had to reduce the quality to send to the news in an email.

Are you whispering in case the Tornado hears you or is the audio just low?

This is a better video of the tornado than the viral one. It only went viral because the kid went nuts.

This is by far the best coverage I have seen of this tornado. Hope you guys were all okay. That's a very scary thing!

I used an old flipcam Mino. The video quality is really bad because I had to make it fit in an email.
