FAKE. Potassium Nitrate will incinerate your dye giving you a dark ugly mass of slow burning smoke. A much better recipe is 50% Dye, 30% Potassium CHLORATE(not nitrate!) and 20% sugar.

@mauro7873 sorry I dont remember commenting to you, but I know a lot about pyrotechnics and no smoke bomb is guaranteed to explode. If you have an air pocket in the smoke bomb, then it can explode, but no smoke bomb can explode unless there is an air pocket or it is contained in a sealed container while lit.

@checkerslob2 This is a fake video. If you use potassium nitrate like they say it will incinerate your dye. A good working mixture is 50% dye, 30% potassium chlorate (not nitrate!), and 20% sugar.

as far as i know this only applies to this specific brand of stump remover.#3- if you cook this in a regular cooking pot, you can still use it afterwards just wash thoroughly with hot water. #4 the kind of dye you need must be organic dye. most dyes are butsome arent and can cost around $12.

I think i can answer some questions. No.1- no offense to SEP but the video of the smoke bomb in action looks more like the potassium chlorate and lactose mixture to me. no matter how many combos of potassium nitrate and sugar ive done have i ever had a succesful ignition without a jet flame, which is essentially what this is, a sugar rocket. #2- if your having trouble finding potassium nitrate, look for Spectracide stump remover as it is 99% PN. it only cost around $9.00 at lowes or home depot

@HappyJackProduction1 You're not missing anything, with the chemicals listed in the video you're not going to get the smoke that they did. I would be willing to bet that the smokebomb they lit off in the video is not the same composition they listed. I've used this same composition and got the same results you did. Very little smoke. Pot. Nit. smoke compositions don't produce that volume of smoke.

Do you have any more info on what type of dye is used other than it comes from "hobby shops"? what type of hobby shop? and what type of organic dye? The reason i ask is potassium nitrate burns too hot for dyes so it'll decompose the dye before it has a chance to colour the smoke. can you give us a link to a data sheet or info for the dye/s that are compatible with potassium nitrate? lots of questions, sorry about that.
