I have an AMD 64 Turion computer I completely whiped out Windows XP Now my computer is an expensive paper weight? Can anyone point me in a direction of how I can get an operating system back on this laptop?

Ubuntu is the best. It's more secure than other distros.

Vista will disable your hardware, if that doesn't work, it'll go after the firmware and render it useless for other computers (if you wanna transfer it, it won't be detected).

Stick to either Ubuntu Linux or XP.

If you're a retro freak, use windows 3.11, cause it's useless to hackers that wanna wreck your computer.

& with linux no prob. Anyway if you are a linux newb like I was & still are, try out Mepis Linux to me it is the best. Also try out dream linux becuase it will remind you of OSX some what, it is cool, but they have not updated Dream Linux in a while & that part sucks. Oh & the Mepis Linux Forum Community to get help at, they are some of the nicest Linux folks that I have ever seen. They are the best. Go & Google Mepis Linux you will luv it.

Here is an update guys. Instead of PCLinuxOS use Ultumix at mindblowingidea dot com / Ultumix. It works better than PCLinuxOS 2007 and it is easier for Windows users than Ubuntu or PCLinuxOS.

When it comes to installing programs and running them and whatnot, how does PC Linux compare to Ubuntu? I should say that I ran into a problem when it came to the Terminal in Ubuntu, having to restart the installation (a file was missing), then the terminal wouldn't start back up after I closed it, and now I can't log in at all. No one on the Forums has responded on the forums. So i'm thinking about ditching Ubuntu and I'm looking at PC Linux or Myah as a replacement.

You can also tell them about the Atheros card not working natively with madwifi drivers because it is to new and madwifi wasn't ready for it. So are you going to teach the user that is probably new to linux how to install ndiswrapper and get it set up?

Thats why I set it all up for them. I put an ASUS Linux compatible PCMCIA card in it and take the Atheros out. I also configure the audio in a special way to get it to work. After that it's cake. I install all the extra plugins for DVDs and the like.

I use linux , windows and just by listening to the way you talk your definetly a biased user. Dude for example when you do a fresh installation of windows obviously it doesn't have word. Also I'm using a Acer Aspire 3680 and I can say from personal experience that it doesn't bring office. So if it doesn't bring office you can easily tell the buyer "you can get open office for windows, so you don't need linux."

I loved Windows. Until that day when the Guy from Microsoft that designed DOS and Windows 286 - 95 for Microsoft told me Linux was better. Ever since I tried it there was no going back. It just works! Besides that you have no idea how many of my customers locally have went to a wall mart and bought a desktop and were told that it came with Full Office 2007, antivirus for only $380.00 only to find out afterwards that it was all a lie. They ended up paying for it.

you got it. Booting up in Vista after getting it all set up still takes 2 minutes on this laptop. In Linux it takes about 45 seconds.

Ubuntu is ok but you can't install .rpm files or make your own software or compile software to install. You have to get pre made debian packages from Ubuntu. I don't like that.
