what ecxactly does applying downward pressure using my thumb means? is it normal to feel sore when playing the outer string?

This video does not show the actual important points on holding the bow. The easiest way is just like holding a chopstick. The thumb controls the bamboo stick, the 2 fingers besides the index finger controls the bow hair.The bow hair should attack the string 90 degree horizontal to get the best tone colour!
