Steve has an amazing, unique "power" voice that fit a niche in BNL that no other member can have; that being said, now going forward will compensate for that. The only disappointment us fans can feel is that old material without Steve's power behind it.
Ed did a good job singing "What a Good Boy." It has to be understood that BNL has to keep pushing forward, and Steve doesn't want to be a part of that right now.
First I will miss Steve but the thing that is starting to really bug me is that some people think the band consisted of Steve yes he was a excellent singer and yes like others I wish he would stay but COME ON these songs still sound amazing and the band is still great I wish some of those people would give tham a chance
I think that in the end the shows will include a lot less of 'Steve's' material. Let the band write some material and not think of Steve's voice singing it and then you will see that the band has a bit more life left in it yet.
For what its worth, for instance, I think Kev did a great job on 'Sound of your voice'. For sure he doesn't have the power of Steve's voice, but he has plenty of emotion./
So, yes it was a shock to see Steve leave the band and allthough i felt a little shook up at first, i think we should be proud that these guys are not just going to call it a day and leave the band in the past. Yes, so the vocals are a bit hit and miss in the whole gig, but i think you should look at the guys as a 'new' band and i await the new material with baited breath. Show your support, like they have to us, the fans.
BNL has been my favorite band for years and years. When I heard the news of Steven's departure, I really did feel like my heart broke. I wondered if Ed, Tyler, Jim and Kevin were really going to go on without him. After letting the news sink in, I decided that I much rather live in a world where Barenaked Ladies exist without Steven instead of the band completely dissolving. We don't know exactly what goes on behind the scenes, but I do know that I'm proud of the guys for keeping BNL together.
I downloaded it as well. Kevin is a fine Keyboardist/ Guitarist/Accordion player, but lacks the power and depth to sing ANY of Steve's songs...they need to audition someone-soon. Jim, however is passable.
Have always loved and will always love Ed! Just downloaded the complete show and just loved it! The music sounds great of course and the adlibs were still there and funny and oddly profound as always. Some backing vocals could use a stronger (does not have to be Steve's) voice but I think a lot of posters here underestimate the talent of these four guys............
Gotta say Stephen's a huge loss to the band as he has had the biggest voice as long as I've followed them since the early 90's. In all honesty the band has been going steadily downhill since what I see as their pinnacle in 'Born on a Pirate Ship'. I'll continue to follow them and see them when they tour the UK but the current stuff really only hints at their former greatness. Having said that I loved Jim's voice on 'Peterborough and the Karawurthas' so it aint all bad.
I'll say, its a bit like seeing your ex with their new love interest, but really... the new set up and vocals arent bad at all... throw your support behind these guys, theyre friggen 1 in a million
is it just me, or while singing this, did jim have this almost punk flatness to his voice? not a bad thing, i think it sounds awesome. adds a cool effect--almost like listening to a whole new version of the song.
Page's voice has a terrific gravity to it that isn't particularly missed in a song like this, but I don't know how BNL will carry off some of their more heartfelt ballads.
The others are great vocalists too- I might even prefer them- but Page's almost operatic delivery may be badly missed.
Still not sure what to think. Never been a fan of this song, particularly, but I'll admit Jim does really sound good on it. I think as long as they don't try to pull off the Steve-vox-only songs like Break Your Heart (sadly, one of the best songs!) they'll be fine. While I've no doubt that between Kev and Jim they're fully capable of doing Steve's vocal parts, on some songs it just won't ever be the same. Best of luck to all of 'em (Steve included)!
while i hope they don't try to do the "break your heart" type songs the same way that page did, i would LOVE to see them re-do the song to fit a new vocal styling. will it be as good? probably not. fun and interesting? definitely.
I thought it was a great show on Saturday. Everyone was really lively and they put on an amazing show. I think Steve leaving was probably for the best. I will miss him, of course, but during the cruise, everything seemed a little... off. The fact that they seem to have recaptured their old energy is a good thing, methinks. :)
I ran into Ed by chance yesterday. I had some warm words for him (you?). I should have also said that I've been very impressed by how gracefully he has handled the past week. My sense is there are a great many more people than BNL might think cheering them on for a big year in 2009 and beyond. I can't wait to hear some new music with your new sound. Here's to the future!
the song is missing something, steve has such a distinct voice. i was a bit skepical that they wouldn't be able to pull it off, but they did it. good job guys
It's different, but it's still BNL. I learned how to play bass 'cause of Jim, so really looking forward to seeing him get to do more 'up at the front'.
I hope they come back over to the UK again soon - I'm really looking forward to hearing the 'new sound' (and yes, I probably am prejudging that i'll be fine with it). :)
I am shocked and disappointed by Steve's behavior. i know he's probably going through a mid-life crisis, but he seemed like such a nice guy. jim did an awesome job singing, but with 4, and without steve , its simply not the same. i have been listening to this band since i was like 5, and it's simply not the same without steve standing next to Ed. they'll still be good though.
Oh wow I think they did this like right before I arrived near them. I really can't watch this more than once even if it is a good song, It just reminds me of what happened after this. I was cutting in line just because my mom found the person behind me as rude, and she said I could go in front. It wasn't a big deal but I can't get that thought out of my head.
BNL was better than GREAT!! Never thought I would say this but I did not miss anything at all from the show--infact I think it was better than before--Thanks guys for giving us your all and then some--best of luck and success in the studio--Rock On!!!!!!!!!!
Wow...its kinds weird not seeing Steve over there, I know itll take some time for me to get used to the new sound. Jim is fantastic dont get me wrong and the guys sound perfect as always...its just...damn i feel like when my parents got separated hahaha...
The show at Universal was FANTASTIC! BnL has an incredible depth of talent that just shows more and more in every performance I see. I'm looking forward to many more years of rocking out to BnL music. And yes, please come to Florida as often as you can. See ya on the next cruise! =)
Agreed. I think they're just trying to keep it light.
If Steve and BNL were really fighting, I don't think they would have bounced back to performing so quickly. They've probably been talking about a split for a while.
So no, I don't think there's resentment/bitterness in Ty's jokes.
We just moved Tyler 8 degrees. That was funny.
