saw em at Macs Hotel in Melton in 88' with Coloured Stone, great gig!!! Refused to play solid rock though!! Didn't care coz/ they played this anthem.. Howard is Brilliant!
Got a letter from Davey just the other day, hitting the dislike button is not ok. Can't find the manners just to let it be, the button that said no you should have let it pass.. but you've been living with your head up your arse...
I moved from Sydney to Gold Coast two years ago, been a tough two years, and many times I've listened to this song, particularly "living in Queensland is not okay", and wondered if I made a massive mistake. Hanging in there, but still harbouring doubts..... Love this song
this song seems to be my life anthem at the moment as times get hard ...... it reminds me of when times where simple and that others are out there trying to touch the sun too !
OMG ! Listening to this song and all those memories come crushing down. Me as a 24 year-old German falling in love with this country while working at the mine at Mt. Newman (W.A.) in 1983/84. Kangaroo hunting at night, lots of Fosters, me and the blokes trying to make the best of life in this desert town while Australian Crawl and Goanna provided the soundtrack .
This song came on the radio when I drove back into Queensland without my family. I new my girls would follow, as they did but I don't remember a moment in my life that hurt as much.
It's been years and years since I was introduced to Goanna, but I have never stopped loving them and their wonderful music. Went looking for "Solid Rock" and found this... wow... wish MTV would have run this one as well. Great video for such a great song.
Goanna manor was an old house/mansion in St Kilda, Melbourne that the band were renovating in return for free rent....It was the base for the band management, though I'm not sure who actually lived there since I never actually slept over. It was a LONG LONG time ago!!!
I'm with Pokernuts. This song makes me happy, but sad at the same time. I get all sentimental when I listen to the old Aussie stuff. It's a shame they're only really known in mainstream music circles for Solid Rock. This song was very much underrated. Also, there wasn't enough clos-ups of Shane's sister Marcia in the clip. She was hot.
I remember that room at Goanna Manor..Those were the good days. Admiring Rose from a distance, wishing I could write like Shane. Why don't we create music lke that these days? It's all drivel these days.
shit hot!!!!! I met Shane when I was working in Cairns in the late 80's. Goanna finished up and he was solo. I printed his tape covers up for his first solo album. He came into the printery...Nice bloke!!
I get happy and sad at the same time when I hear old songs like this. Happy because it's ridgey didge, true blue, a song of the land, reminding me of happy times in my youth, but sad because good and simple Aussie music like this doesn't get made anymore.
The song we need right now. GFC? Terrorism? Sit back pop this on and suddenly you're sitting on Wategos in the 80's with a good mate, a wad of paper cash in your Levis, your old man's brown Toyota Carona and a room at the Great Northern. Right up there with Capricorn Dancer as one of the great Aussie relax songs.
Hey - I would love to hear the song, I think, they wrote, about the Franklin Dam (sorry if I spelt it wrong) - I think it kind of went - let the franklin flow, let the wilds run free, the wilderness should be strong and free - I won't wreck it by guessing the rest.... anyone?
You can't go past this gem! Imagery song writing at its best and unashamedly Australian. The other band that is equal is Warumpi Band, Neil Murrays first band, absolutely fantastic!
i had lunch about 18yrs ago with shane in a little place in lancefield in victoria and he said he wishs he could still write like this, well he still does. he should have been bigger then he is but if you asked him he would tell you that he is happier this way.
I absolutely love this song. Its pure Aussie and pure Aussie 80'S feeling...I still play it now at functions...Great stuff, of course along with their other top hit. Goanna come back. I would love to see some-one do a rendition of your songs. Get back on the map!! Cheers.
