This song is like an old friend to me, never lets me down! Warm fuzzy nostagia through and through. Still an incredible record that has stood the test of time better than any of their other material in my humble opinion.
this album sat under my nose for about 30 years. my parents had it and i never listened to it because, being their last album, i didn't recognize any of the songs. it wasn't until a few months ago when i picked up my own record copy for a buck that i discovered all the great abba songs that i'd never even heard. it's one of those albums that is no filler. every song is great. and being someone who doesn't answer doorbells or phones, i found this song to be funny.
Another great song by them... Brings back some sweet memories when my friend use to pick me up in his Ford Escourt 1300, playing this song on his Alpine Tape deck. And then we on our way.. going to visit some girls. or just driving around and listen to this song and the others of this ABBA album.. WOW.. and that was in the 80's.. 37 years ago !!!! remember it like yesterday.. TIMELESS !!!!
It's the first time I've heard these bell-like sounds starting with 1:18. They are quite well heard until 1:32.
Another prove of Bjorn and Benny's masterly instrumentalization.
Do you know, folks, that in the respectable encycloppaedia on music, Grove, in the article on ABBA, this instrumentalization is also appreciated and praised.
"I have been waiting for these visitors ~ Help me..." This is an amazing song. I remember loving it the first time I heard it in the fall of 81. When All Is Said And Done was the first single from The Visitors album here in the US, and the only one I was familiar with from air play. This song blew me away when I bought the album and it still holds up today!

12.2.11 at 4:07am British time - 10 dislikes - Oh please, someone just get the machine gun - getting sick of arseholes!!! This is an AWESOME SONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love it so much!!!!!!!!!!

@dutico Oh yea. Frida definately has an awesome voice. Both of them together sound like angels. But i guess us ABBA fans will always be have the friendly rivalry over which one of the girls is more angelic. A hopeless but nonetheless fun, battle.
Just look at Agnetha in the shot at 1:44. That is someone singing their heart out with total focus and passion. Current singers, take note - that's how it's done...
As an aside, 30th November 1981 seems spot-on to me. I received this album as a Christmas present (on cassette!) that year, and it had just been released.
@Lee71England The Visitors album is one of my favorites and did you know that this album was the first one in history to be recorded on the new CD format in 1982!
@ji61m No, I didn't know that. Interesting stuff. Thanks. (For some reason I always assumed that honour went to Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits. Now I know differently!)
@ji61m Interesting. A related music trivia note- the band "Flim & the BB's" were the first band to create an album (Tricycle) that was mastered entirely in the digital domain. Amazing how technology can change the way we make and record music, and yet there is no replacement for raw talent. Just think- some of the best sounding recordings ever made were done without the benefit of even so much as a computer, let alone all of the tools that they enable.
@Lee71England Because these people were pure artists, pure creativity, who had their own sound with the voices and musical genius to complete the circle of perfection. That is how I see them, anyway, and I remember their beginning as a group. They have no equal, none.
An incredible song dealing with the phenomenon of extra terrestrial visitation. There's no possibillity of help or understanding of her predicament. Cracking up!. Flangy guitar mimics a landing spacecraft. 0:20 is the 'alien knock' on the door. Descriptions of constant fear, irretation and paranoia of these alien 'visitors'. This hi-fidelity stereo song which could've been easily produced by Vangelis embellishes the sci-fi theme. "I have been waiting for these visitors" Aliens from another world.
@Regalseven No, the song is not about aliens. It's about dissidents in the former Soviet Union and the "visitors" are the secret police. Björn has said so himself.
Jim you are the man' This song took me a couple times to listen to. But I believe they were on the verge of so much. It was an epiphany not unlike the Beetles in the sixties. Thanks, Christian
ABBA and The Beatles are the best musical groups ever!!! they both inspire many people. they inspire me!!! Those of u who disagree with me, well, u can have your opinion but i think mine is better. i think the world was lucky to have the beatles in the 60s and abba in the 70s right after the beatles!♥
"Among the things I loved so dearly - the books, the paintings and the furniture..."
This line reminds me of the announcement by John Kennedy Jr. of his mother Jackie O's death. He said something like she died among the things she loved and then listed them - very much like the opening of this song. I've never been a huge Kennedy fan, but I've always remembered JFK Jr.'s words because they reminded me of this ABBA song! I've never forgotten it.
@QUASARA I'm sure! This was the " final " single release from ABBA and it was released in the United States in 1982! The album itself was recorded from March thru November of 1981, and was released November 30th, 1981.
@ji61m Actually The Visitors was not the final single release in the United States. The Day Before You Came was issued as a single, as was One of Us, and both failed to chart on the Hot 100 singles. One of Us came close though by hitting # 107 in early '83. I know this because I own the later single, and have seen the single pressing of TDBYC in used record stores.
@nightmoves44 "The Visitors", originally "Den första" (meaning "The First"), was the final single release from ABBA's studio album of the same name, released in the United States in 1982.
" The Visitors " Recorded Oct 22, 1981 and released in 1982 was the final single release!
" The Day Before You Came " Released Oct 18th, 1982 and was their last ABBA recording!
" One of Us " Recorded Oct 21st, 1981 It was the 1st single released from " The Visitors " and was their last hit song!
the visitors had to have come out before that because i'm pretty sure i have this on a taped mix from a dj in denver. and i'm almost certain that this is on it. which mix now would be a good question. i like a lot of 'em.
This is my fave track from, what I consider, their most adult collection of songs. Pity this was the last offering, when they promised such an interesting maturity in their writing. Frida's voice suits it so well and shows her versatility - love the way she bends the notes (and on Sister Valsen more recently) . Always wondered why this title track is quieter than others, though ?
I remember when this came out, along with "Lay All Your Love on Me." I thought, Who is this? Freaked me out when I found out this was Abba. These two songs were just brilliant; the remixes packed the dance floors. They don't sound much like what one expects from Abba: well-crafted pop. But in a way they bridged the gap between pop and dance, which shows you how versatile they were.
{Who would have thought the 4-some that created 'Dancing Queen' could write such a blissfully freaky song? Why-o-Y do they continue to deny us a reunion and make us suffer inferior 'Tribute bands'? ABBA - long may they reign.}
This song is so heavy, takes me always to tears. I love abba for this song. Whenever I know something went wrong, I know this song can bring me to cry. After that, it is always much easier. That´s why females life longer. They cry everything out. I have to take this way...
Creo que es una de las ultimas canciones de ABBA, y la escuchaba cuando fui a pasear a arequipa con mi promo de la universidad. Que tiempos, y todavia recuerdo a Silvia de Chiclayo. Saludos.
...if you really want to see this song in action, check out "Remember the Party 2009 Close encounters of the disco kind ABBA The Visitors" ...reunion party live at the Trocadero in San Francisco...6:00 in the dance floor is on fire !!
is it any wonder that the song sounds the way it does? back in the '80s things were very sci-fi,new age/ digital, yet futuristic. the computer age began. and with what was going on in their country, why not use double entendre(sp) in a funky song. prince was doing it, and so was marvin gaye( politcal) thats how you get people's attention with social issues; thru song.
I heard this song 28 years ago and was truly amazed. A totally different flavor in the '80's. Not being an Abba fan at time this song made me listen to how deep their music was.
Glad I found this on YouTube as it brought back beautiful memories on how the music scene of that time was so timeless. Nothing else compares today!!
This is one of those songs that cannot be improved upon..In its time it was so unusual,so different, and unique.Nobody could touch ABBA for creating new boundaries in music, and The Visitors was one of those ..It still gives me chills when I hear it..Fridas voice is amazing on this one ..Nice one Jim..Cheers..
I love this song, it should have been a major hit, but unfortunately ABBA'S popularity at the time had declined. I also love The Visitor's album. Long live ABBA"S music.
Actually, this song is a underhanded political statement. At the time, Poland and other countries neighbouring Sweden were under the yoke of communism. Any criticism had to be subtle. It would be interesting for me as a Swede to hear from anybody if it actually worked.
Great song! ABBA has a totally different sound here then their songs from the 70's. This song is from 1981 but it's timeless... wonderful arrangements and great performance by Frida here!
I had a friend that had a 12" remix of this song back in the mid 80s. I think he said he paid like $40 at the time. He also had a very rare 12" remix of 'Lay all your love on me' that he paid about the same for. You might watch Ebay. I've seen some songs resurface there that I thought I'd never see again.
This song is still ahead of it's time, IMO. Anyone that thinks ABBA was stuck in the 70's need take a closer listen to their last two studio albums from the early 80's. Jim, I do respectfully disagree about your questionning Madonna. Like her or not, in terms of being a trendsetter, she definitely did that in a way few other performers have.
this song is sang by Frida, I find this very very nice, she had a wonderful voice and charisma, and even Agneta was my all time favorite I have always recognized Frida as an amazing artist and singer, plus she was so beautiful, when the part where she sings help me always moves me
This is Abba's most curious song. A slightly inter galactic odyssey. Taking on a sci-fi theme. The influence of Vangelis can clearly be heard here. It's Abba embracing the 'Stockhom sound' or even being proponents of it which was in vogue at the time. A type of inocent Swedish disco music. Visitors' Cracking Up was to inspire a sci-fi tv series called 'V' which the aliens were refered to as 'The Visitors' "I have been waiting for these visitors" hints at the coming of aliens from another planet
An outstanding comment! I like the way you summed it up. I wouldn't blame any fans who chose this final ABBA album as their favorite! The "sci-fi" did show that the band could have forged new ground had it continued further through the 80s.
I was always a diehard Abba fan, but without a doubt their final album (and in particular this track) was imho their most inspired. Whenever I listen to this track, and 'Under Attack', I think sadly of what they might have released if they hadn't split. Such a great song, and in this anniversary year of the fall of the Berlin Wall, it's all the more pertinent.
Truly among ABBA's best if not the band's very best! I drives me crazy that their first two ORIGINAL greatest hits albums are now long out of print. The Singles: The First Ten Years is also out of print. It had "Under Attack," too. All three would be terrific on CD again.
That is very exciting to know. I only heard a copy of The Visitors that had no extra track(s). There is still something magical about hearing the original greatest hits albums with the songs placed in their original sequence on those albums. Years ago I heard those two compilations on vinyl. The same thing happened with The Singles. That is why those three collections will always hold a special place for me. I still would love to see them appear on CD. It seems they are "deleted forever."
Clearly this was the deepest of albums produced by ABBA. Based on the two songs that didn't make the album, I presume that they were still headed in a direction of meaningful lyrics and true-to-life songs. IMO.
Fantastic video, Jim. The Visitors was definitely the best album - this track is quite haunting but at the same time really beautiful. I'm nearly 17 and I listen to ABBA practically every day (which tends to confuse my friends a lot). I think that though they sound very different from the last 'happy' album, which I feel is Voulez Vous, from just two years before, they are just as good and possibly even better.
I was told that this songs lyrics were about Ann Frank and her experience of hiding out in the attic where she hid with her family and other people.....has anyone else ever heard this?
I agree with you that this the best (or at least neck to neck with Super Trouper) as their best album. Their albums got better and better with each new album presented. Their songwriting became insatiable.
Fantastic song! :)

This is a frigging amazing song. Great vocal by Frida, who was the only one of the two who could really do it justice.

{Who would have thought the 4-some that created 'Dancing Queen' could write such a blissfully freaky song? Why-o-Y do they continue to deny us a reunion and make us suffer inferior 'Tribute bands'? ABBA - long may they reign.}

Saludos.

I couldnt believe this was ABBA when i first heard it, It almost sounds like a dance track from the 90's not the 70's.

The visitor album i think was one of the best that abba had done.

...if you really want to see this song in action, check out "Remember the Party 2009 Close encounters of the disco kind ABBA The Visitors" ...reunion party live at the Trocadero in San Francisco...6:00 in the dance floor is on fire !!

I never heard this one i wanted to know if that's true that this, they last album, was different of the others.
Now, i have to say that's it's really different, it's a good song, but it doesn't have at all that magic of that wonderful 70's years.
TheOneBeatle 2 years ago
one of my favourites song of Abba, although they made a lot or very melodious singles.
wahpla 2 years ago
is it any wonder that the song sounds the way it does? back in the '80s things were very sci-fi,new age/ digital, yet futuristic. the computer age began. and with what was going on in their country, why not use double entendre(sp) in a funky song. prince was doing it, and so was marvin gaye( politcal) thats how you get people's attention with social issues; thru song.
ninahhhdreams 2 years ago
I heard this song 28 years ago and was truly amazed. A totally different flavor in the '80's. Not being an Abba fan at time this song made me listen to how deep their music was.
Glad I found this on YouTube as it brought back beautiful memories on how the music scene of that time was so timeless. Nothing else compares today!!
dgsmax1 2 years ago
This is one of those songs that cannot be improved upon..In its time it was so unusual,so different, and unique.Nobody could touch ABBA for creating new boundaries in music, and The Visitors was one of those ..It still gives me chills when I hear it..Fridas voice is amazing on this one ..Nice one Jim..Cheers..

It usually happens that every band´s best album happens when its popularity is already down.
So the album ends up killing what was left of the band.
Sad but true...
galonga 2 years ago
I love this song, it should have been a major hit, but unfortunately ABBA'S popularity at the time had declined. I also love The Visitor's album. Long live ABBA"S music.
1976reef 2 years ago
I agree, I think the Visitors are Abbas best album.
DronningJade 2 years ago
Actually, this song is a underhanded political statement. At the time, Poland and other countries neighbouring Sweden were under the yoke of communism. Any criticism had to be subtle. It would be interesting for me as a Swede to hear from anybody if it actually worked.

That makes sence with the lyrics.

Great song! ABBA has a totally different sound here then their songs from the 70's. This song is from 1981 but it's timeless... wonderful arrangements and great performance by Frida here!
stockholmboy29 2 years ago
I had a friend that had a 12" remix of this song back in the mid 80s. I think he said he paid like $40 at the time. He also had a very rare 12" remix of 'Lay all your love on me' that he paid about the same for. You might watch Ebay. I've seen some songs resurface there that I thought I'd never see again.
GaryG660 2 years ago
does exists somewhere a dance remix version of this song?

I have been waiting for these Visitors.
AdamStabelli888 2 years ago
This song is still ahead of it's time, IMO. Anyone that thinks ABBA was stuck in the 70's need take a closer listen to their last two studio albums from the early 80's. Jim, I do respectfully disagree about your questionning Madonna. Like her or not, in terms of being a trendsetter, she definitely did that in a way few other performers have.
nightmoves44 2 years ago 4
this song is sang by Frida, I find this very very nice, she had a wonderful voice and charisma, and even Agneta was my all time favorite I have always recognized Frida as an amazing artist and singer, plus she was so beautiful, when the part where she sings help me always moves me
Silviatube2006 2 years ago 4
This is Abba's most curious song. A slightly inter galactic odyssey. Taking on a sci-fi theme. The influence of Vangelis can clearly be heard here. It's Abba embracing the 'Stockhom sound' or even being proponents of it which was in vogue at the time. A type of inocent Swedish disco music. Visitors' Cracking Up was to inspire a sci-fi tv series called 'V' which the aliens were refered to as 'The Visitors' "I have been waiting for these visitors" hints at the coming of aliens from another planet
Regalseven 2 years ago
This song has nothing to do with aliens; it's a about a political dissident, living in a dictatorship, who's about to be taken by the secret police.
josfre 2 years ago 4
An outstanding comment! I like the way you summed it up. I wouldn't blame any fans who chose this final ABBA album as their favorite! The "sci-fi" did show that the band could have forged new ground had it continued further through the 80s.
What a lasting final studio release!
sandinyourshoes 2 years ago
I was always a diehard Abba fan, but without a doubt their final album (and in particular this track) was imho their most inspired. Whenever I listen to this track, and 'Under Attack', I think sadly of what they might have released if they hadn't split. Such a great song, and in this anniversary year of the fall of the Berlin Wall, it's all the more pertinent.
andrew11121 2 years ago 3
Truly among ABBA's best if not the band's very best! I drives me crazy that their first two ORIGINAL greatest hits albums are now long out of print. The Singles: The First Ten Years is also out of print. It had "Under Attack," too. All three would be terrific on CD again.
sandinyourshoes 2 years ago 2
You can find "Under Attack" as a bonus track on the remastered version of "The Visitors" album from 2001.
Symphonyofflowers 2 years ago

IMO.
taugen 2 years ago
This is very catchy! I love it! Even tho its kinda a little dark.... But its so awesome!!!!!
cozynaruto 2 years ago 2
ABBA's darkest song. The Visitors itself was a dark album. Makes me wonder if ABBA would have continued in this direction had they not broken up.

I was always amazed how ABBA changed guidelines year after year never loosing theyr brilliant quality.

Fantastic video, Jim. The Visitors was definitely the best album - this track is quite haunting but at the same time really beautiful. I'm nearly 17 and I listen to ABBA practically every day (which tends to confuse my friends a lot). I think that though they sound very different from the last 'happy' album, which I feel is Voulez Vous, from just two years before, they are just as good and possibly even better.
sarahjane4eva 2 years ago
What a shocking theory! The singing character sounds so happy. Can't imagine, how to bring this together. But I also wonder, what the song is about.

'The Visitors' is not only the best album that ABBA ever wrote, performed, and produced - it is one of the greatest pop albums ever.

I agree with you that this the best (or at least neck to neck with Super Trouper) as their best album. Their albums got better and better with each new album presented. Their songwriting became insatiable.
