Excellent video! I came here from your open tag and, even though I'm not much of a hockey fan (despite being Canadian), I really enjoyed it. It was well-researched and incredibly informative, so thanks for putting it up!
Amazing review! I just finished watching and you were informative, funny, and nice to listen to. Really enjoyed this video, as a hockey fan, a leafs fan and a canadian! lol The only game I didn't see in there that i was sort of expecting was Nintendo's Ice Hockey, where u get to pick your player sizes and make a team with different balances. I didn't know about many of the ones you mentioned though :D again awesome review dude!
Great video! Very informative, you really know your stuff. I personally prefer the EA Sports NHL series, 'cause the rosters are more full and accurate, with CHL teams and European leagues. As for the 2K series, it seems to go for a more visual approach; it presents itself fairly well, but the gameplay and roster customization options suffer a great deal.
@saintsfan2500 Thanks I really appreciate it. I can honestly say its the video that took the longest to make and also one that I really enjoyed making. Glad you liked it :)
This was a very excellent video :) I myself am not a big hockey fan, but this was a really awesome video about hockey in video games! That tune that played about hockey being played is fantastic! Its a really nice catchy tune that you can sing anytime! Over all this was a very well put together video, top notch brother man :)
@Love4SK Yes, the consoles may have dropped in sales, but not as bad as in America, and there was strong demand for the home computer as everybody wanted to get rich quick making games (and parents thought they were buying an educational tool lol)
Great video! Hockey video games have an everlasting link with me. Growing up in San Jose in the 80s there wasn't much hockey around, I knew of the sport and admired it, but never got to watch it. An arcade I visited after school had Hat Trick, and I played it A LOT. Come the early 90s the SJ Sharks came, the same year as EA's game. I learned the basic rules of the sport through the video game! I soon started playing real hockey after and have ever since (and still play video hockey too!)
@jarring69 I noticed the calendar thing after I finished the movie. I was hoping no one would notice. In my mind I somehow transposed 1990 and 2009. Weird. The crazed father in the Ice Hockey ad is Phil Hartman. Not sure about the store owner.
Blades of Steel was great. I'm not even a sports fan but I liked that game back in the day. It's probably the only sports game I owned! Oh that's funny with having the NHL license and then the NHLPA but not the NHL in 93. That's just whack. Also Slap Shot is a classic movie. Man I know so little about Hockey I thought the Hansen brothers were real Hockey players up until not that long ago when I realized they were made up for a movie!
@MN12BIRD What's interesting is that the Leafs have a player named Christian Hanson who is a real hockey player and is the son of Dave Hanson, one of the actual Hanson brothers :)
Personally I only own NHLPA Hockey '93 and EA Hockey (which is the same as NHLPA Hockey '93 I think...couldn't find any differences) for the Mega Drive.
@shaurz Yea I should have mentioned that one but I was originally trying to keep it under the 15 minute limit youtube had at the time and didn't end up making it by just 30 seconds or so anyway.
Excellent video man. Really well done documentary style video with your sense of humor. I have to say though why the hate on Mighty Ducks. The movies were funny and actually showed Hockey in a really good light. I started watching Hockey and playing street Hockey because of those movies.
I admit it... I've played hockey video games more than real hockey. The version I've played the most was one for DOS featuring Wayne Gretzky. I should mention too that the only "3D" hockey videogame I've played was NHL Stanley Cup Hockey for SNES... and I didn't like it much, probably because it didn't plays like the hockey videogames I knew so far.
Great video! Hockey is my favorite sport to play via video games.
My jaw dropped when I saw that International Hockey game for the C64. I used to play that when I was a kid, but it was like it's been erased from my memory since then. Now I've got that memory back!
I haven't really played a hockey game since the PS1 / early PS2 days, but this video makes me want to run out and buy the latest Hockey game for the PS3.
@atarileaf lol, I'd also have to find myself a C64. Kind of surprising I don't have one since I have a lot of fond memories of using one for years and years when I was younger.

Great video, but the title is misleading, it's a history of hockey video games, not of hockey through video games.
Also, when you mention the 1990s, you show a calendar of January 2009.
And is that Bryan Cranston in the Activision ad?

This remains an excellent 'canadian hockey video game history' documentary. Glad you put it up on YT too with the longer limit.

good report!
my fave in the 90s was wayne gretzky hockey for the amiga. the mouse steering made it really good!
agree with early NHL series. later series getting worse because it's more or less a team/players update.
