It's the volume. The stuff you can hear well is played at p or softer. So if you are hearing a good dynamic range in Portraits, then p = ppp and f = p. So, the emotion evoked by the dynamics has less to do with the physical level of the sound and more to do with the control of the relationships within a dynamic range.
So, the softer you can play, then the louder you can play?
piano is OK, on the edge of the drum, but Fortissimo do it in the center of drum.
