Elton is supposed to be ultra handsome and gorgeous, and Mr Knightley is often described by his young looks :) Besides, JLM WAS at the age of Knightley when he played this(37)
Futhermore, I actually do prefer Knightley's looks in this than Eltons... Mr Knightly(OK, Miller) shows off more elegance
this argument is some of my favourite dialogue from the novel! knightley and emma's bickering is hilarious and garai's facial expressions and body language is so on point - specifically: "Harriet IS a gentleman's daughter, she associates with gentlemen's daughters; therefore she is superior to your Robert Martin"
This version is excellent. The fact of the matter is that television is a different medium than the novel. By making strong choices the director is acknowledging that this is an interpretation of the book; the fact that it is being expressed in a different medium from the original demands no less.
Jesus, what is wrong with Romola Garai's face! Her constant mugging and bizarre facial tics are totally distracting. There is such a thing as restraint and subtlety, you know.
@GrainneMhaol Your censure of Garai's acting is a little unfair, I think. In her defense, if you hear the director comments on the styling and acting of this BBC mini-series, he was intent on giving this a decidedly (but not exaggeratedly) modernistic touch. I'd like to point out that ALL the actors were instructed (and performed) with a free-er bodily nuisance. Case in point, Miller's scolding scene of Emma here (look at his finger wagging!). I personally thought her performance splendid.
@feifus Why not make a modern version then? The social conventions and mores of the time were restrictive, movements were constrained and gestures and expressions had very specific meanings. If people act expressively, moving and acting like they would today, it takes the impact out of the story completely, decontextualising Emma's story. People simply did not express their every feeling and thought in the free manner in which we do today, if they did, there would be no story.
@GrainneMhaol A fully modern version had already been made in '95 :P I understand where you are coming from. From a puristic POV, this new version takes more creative license than a completely faithful interpretation would allow. But Austen's works have always been subject to new re-interpretations & explorations. Can you really begrudge creative entertainment? If everyone wants consistently faithful adaptations, why would there be interest in a re-adaptation of an Austen novel every few years?
@feifus Basically, I merely wanted to point out that yes, this new Emma is less constrained than conventional Regency Era society would perhaps allow. But she fits right in with the cast and setting of THIS adaptation. I don't think she was over-exaggerating her acting when taken into context the styling of this mini-series. The director deliberately wanted his actors to interpret his script this way and really, a few more gestures of the hand doesn't completely eliminate a story as you say.
@feifus And actually, it was through this adaptation of Emma that I really "got" her character. Garai's quick moving & restless gestures really highlighted Emma's immaturity & boredom. Here is a girl, on the cusp of womanhood, who's talents & attentions are much too lively for a sleepy town like Highbury. I finally understood why this intelligent, warm-hearted lady could create such miserable blunders. I LOVE this director's decision to add new scenes of Emma's fixation on the "outside" world.
@feifus I've got nothing against reinterpretations, but juxtaposing modern sensibilities on a period setting is jarring. Yes, there is obviously a demand to see period drama, but remaking the same old favourites smacks of laziness and invites weird and disjointed takes on the story, like this one. Why not blow some dust off other classics? Or adapt newer novels? There are a plethora of novels set in period times. Or write original dramas? That would be a lot more risk-taking than this.
@gotGodandHislove he is so hot! i love him in this version i hate it when they cast a hideous looking fella for him, he is described by Jane Austen as very handsome! <3 <3
Hee hee ... I love it at 0.46 ... Where Mr Knightley (our lovely Johnny Lee Miller) is looking around the room for conformation... That Harriet Smith is indeed a Gentleman's daughter.... What an expressive face he has and Emma (Romola Garai) too...
Oh happy me, for I get to watch this version as much as I please...
Many thanks @cat4fab, for posting this for all us Austen fans to enjoy... :0)x
I just love Romola Garai. I think she did the most fantastic job as Emma. She is more care-free and informal than the character that was potrayed by other actors.
"his appearance was so much against him" says Emma of Mr. Martin, I guess because he wasn't well dressed. But the Jefferson Hall, who plays Mr. Martin, is very handsome !
Its so funny when people say they were 2 exspresive. people didnt walk around with a face like a slaped arse as we tink now. and its even better becuase it shows how close they are that they can be them slefs around each other
Is it just me... Or does the pretty young lady who play Emma.. remind me of the actress who played 'Louisa Hurst in Pride and Prejudice.. Charles Bingley's married sister... I wonder if Romola could be her daughter?? Does anyone know???? :0)x
It's quite different to previous adaptions, but I actually think that's an advantage. It's got so much more life and energy, which I think is really very Austen-esque...
I'm a bit disappointed with this adaptation thus far... Not with the actors (all are more than suited for the parts, I think) but with the screenplay and dialogue...
The director admittedly "modernized" this Emma by having the actors emote far beyond what they would have for the period; more gesticulating and verbalizing instead of the usual reserve. I love it; all scenes between Emma and Mr. Knightley are priceless!
I didn't really like Johnny Lee Miller as Edmund in "Mansfield Park," but I'm LOVING him as Mr. Knightley! I think he's more suited to a bolder character; while I do like Edmund's character, JLM just didn't fit it for me. Kudos for whoever cast him in this, though.
So funny that the actor playing Elton played Edmund in the 2008 BBC rendition of Mansfield Park. I completely agree by the way, Johnny Lee Miller is the only Knightley for me!
Agree, he's much better here. But I must admit I didn't like anyone in that version of Mansfield Park. A funny and witty Fanny Price? Really??? Everything seemed very off to me in that movie.
I know! Almost EVERY Austen lover hates that version of Mansfield Park. It should be tagged as "LOOSELY inspired by Jane Austen." Should I admit that I actually like that version? I kinda had to force myself to mentally pretend it's not an adaptation so I could enjoy it for what it is, rather than what it's not.
That movie drives me banana sandwich! I'm so glad I'm not alone on this. The director even admits that her Fanny price is based on Jane Austen herself! Hasn't Austen written enough spunky, spirited and witty heroines as it is? Why couldn't she leave quiet, kinda stuffy and introverted Fanny the way she was written? I don't begrudge anyone their love for that movie, I just think it should have been given another title. It has so little in common with Mansfield Park in reality.
This is a really enjoyable adaptation, but I really don't think Emma is as "periodic" as she could be; for example, when she gets pissed at Knightley and slaps her hands against her hips. It might just be me, but that seems a bit too violent for young women her age, esp. with her upbringing.
@KezWasHere Oh, you just made me laugh! :) Reading through the comments, I keep seeing "too modern in their facial expressions and mannerisms." Did people's faces not work properly back then? Lol!
The director of this adaption wanted the actors to have a more modern edge so they express themselves in a way that has more in common with THIS time, instead of THAT time :)
Speaking of the American release, anyone know if BBC is going to pull their usual shenanigans and edit out certain scenes for the US verision? That infuriates me with the other miniseries out there (the worst offender in recent memory was Lorna Doone, which I swear is missing half the movie in the crappy A&E version, due to both editing and formatting), and I will be furious if they pull that crap with my beloved Emma!
I was afraid that Jonny Lee Miller would forever be Edmund to me, but after this scene, I can't imagine a more perfect role. Edmund is a wet noodle compared to his Mr. Knightley.
I wish all the thousands and thousands of people that watch these clips would go and buy the dvd, they get payed to entertain us and judging by all the comments, entertain us they have. I think they deserve the reward.
sorry, I didn't realize but you know what I mean though right? I just mean that the quality of entertainment all these fine actors give us, they deserve for us all to buy the dvd and I know that you would if you could so that's brilliant, just hope there are more like you. Is there nowhere you can get it on the net? Amazon or somewhere like that, that's where I got mine.
Nowhere that I like to trade. :c( I prefer to use NZ trading sites as the shipping is reasonable (the cost of shipping from the US to my tiny little country is pretty high) and I know how much the item will cost in my own currency beforehand. However I do constantly check for any new appearance of this version of Emma on TradeMe and Fishpond in the hopes that it will be available for me. I have faith that sooner or later I'll be able to call it mine. :c) Can't wait!
Ohhhh be still my beating heart, if only they could make up so breathlessly and violently. Love this scene, it is captured so perfectly as of the book, brought to life in fact . No one else could play Knightly now he is too hard an act to follow.
Oh well it's worth the wait anyway isn't it. Have you seen it yet or just clips on net. The US get it on 24th of this month so they've had to wait. We got it in UK in October last year in four, 1 hour long episodes, so waiting for 1 a week was hard enough! Good luck
JLM is the correct age for the character, who is supposed to be 37. He could also be considered plain in some lights, although I mean no offence to his fangirls. He wasn't ugly, and plain people become attractive when you grow to appreciate their characters.
@imasinnerimasaint Well, I'm one of his fangirls and I certainly do not think he is plain, let alone ugly. But people have different tastes. I think Blake Ritson is an absolute creep, while evryone seems to find him extremely attractive.
Oh don't get me wrong. I personally think JLM is very attractive as Mr Knightley. I just meant that, he's not so ridiculously young and handsome (you know the type I mean) that he doesn't suit the character. I mean, personally, if I was Emma, I would definitely fall for him hard, but for me, his appearance grows on you until you get to the point when you can't believe you didn't think he was drop-dead-gorgeous at first, and yet, his personal beauty is not striking in and of itself.
Check out JLM in "Trainspotting" as Sick Boy and he is gorgeous for the first sighting. But I totally agree with you. His attractiveness grows on you as you see him act. I loved him as Eli Stone. I miss that series.
I certainly did not mean to say that I thought he was ugly, just - not immediately striking. :c) Phantomwaltz is wrong anyway, because 37 is certainly not old (I'm 20 and my bf is 37, so I know it's not old), and there was no description of his appearance. I think JLM is plain enough that one is not astonished by his gorgeous looks at first sight and goodlooking enough that by the end of the movie I think many of us wish we were Emma, and he our Mr. Knightley.
Oh and I think Blake Ritson plays a creep very well, as Mr. Elton. He didn't do it for me as Edmund though because I kept on getting distracted by that damn fringe. His hair is badly done in this movie as well, too much gel. Fine for today but unlikely then - certainly not the fashion. He's goodlooking enough to a casual observer but I'm glad he was Elton and JLM Knightley and not the other way around. I don't trust his kind of astonishing good looks (at first sight) anyway.
I am just glad that Mr. Knightley instinctively knows that Emma is not in love with Elton and that she is just setting him up instead of the jealousy that ensues after Frank enters the picture and tries to set him up too.
This is a wonderful version, definately the most detailed.
Their argument really shows his maturity versus her childishness. And I love how the scene of him in the background with Elton outside and his frustration of Emma shows how he feels. That he cares, but he expects more, not just the silly girl many accept. I love that we'll get to see how he realizes his feelings. Jonny Lee is fantastic!
This version of Emma has already delighted me! I cannot say now if it beats the 1996 Emma since I have yet to watch more of this version, but I have a feeling it might. Knightly is so cute! He expresses his emotions more so than the 1996 Knightly. Especially when Emma met with Mr. Elton. You could tell he was like "Back away from her" to Mr. Elton. lol
I really like this version of Emma. It's a bit more happy-go-lucky than the 1996 one and a lot more funny. At first, I wasn't sure about Johnny Lee Miller being cast as Knightley, since something about him seemed to soft and young, but now I see it as the goofier and less stern version of Knightley in 1996. HAHA, his argument with Emma over Harriet is hilarious! Ramola is a good Emma, since she's expressive enough (though sometimes too much so), and she's so pretty!
I was thinking that Johnny Lee Miller looked too young to be Knightley, but I looked it up, and he is 37, while Romola is 27. It's not as big an age gap as the one in the novel, but that's still ten years.
I liked Mr. Elton as Edmund in Mansfield Park, but he makes a gloriously full-of-himself character here--only Emma could be so out of it to not see that he's making up to her!
Well, this is "the" kind of Emma whom I would love to see "eating the humble pie", getting on her knees to beg for forgiveness or learning a lesson or two -at least! I've never felt that way towards the Emmas in other versions.
Watching this, helps that famous Jane Austen phrase on Emma, "I am going to take a heroine whom no-one but myself will much like", to make sense really.
Thank you for posting this. While part of me wishes that the script didn't extrapolate so much--adding what wasn't there, for instance, like Emma's comments on Jane, Frank and herself being intertwined in "some strange way"--and I wish Romola Garai, whom I adore, wasn't quite so animated--I respect this treatment of the novel. It's like a fresh, enjoyable perspective. Will definitely be watching the other episodes. :-)
i have just watched episodes 2 and 3 by just typing in emma bbc 2009 on google. oh, wait until you watch episode 3! so lovely. i can not wait till next weeks episode which i believe is the last. oh i love jane austen. i will most certainly be buying this show on dvd. for those of you who havent watched "lost in austen"...do! it is quite entertaining. (youtube has it.) also watch daniel deronda (little bit sad but still good) has alot of the same actors in it...romola .
Bwahaha "I adore you. I think I might die if you refuse me." Get out of the carriage and run Emma! lol :D I love this version! Its so different from the other 2 (GP and KB). Emma seems such a 3D real character - I can totally relate to her lol and JLM is very good as Knightley. can't wait for ep.3!
I declare -after watching this 6 times and commenting on this very video way to many times than I should-
that we seem to need *cpunts comments*

I was afraid that Jonny Lee Miller would forever be Edmund to me, but after this scene, I can't imagine a more perfect role. Edmund is a wet noodle compared to his Mr. Knightley.

I wish all the thousands and thousands of people that watch these clips would go and buy the dvd, they get payed to entertain us and judging by all the comments, entertain us they have. I think they deserve the reward.
jules666888 2 years ago
@jules666888 I would if I could get it and will as soon as I can. I live in NZ. I may have to wait some time.
imasinnerimasaint 2 years ago
sorry, I didn't realize but you know what I mean though right? I just mean that the quality of entertainment all these fine actors give us, they deserve for us all to buy the dvd and I know that you would if you could so that's brilliant, just hope there are more like you. Is there nowhere you can get it on the net? Amazon or somewhere like that, that's where I got mine.
jules666888 2 years ago
Nowhere that I like to trade. :c( I prefer to use NZ trading sites as the shipping is reasonable (the cost of shipping from the US to my tiny little country is pretty high) and I know how much the item will cost in my own currency beforehand. However I do constantly check for any new appearance of this version of Emma on TradeMe and Fishpond in the hopes that it will be available for me. I have faith that sooner or later I'll be able to call it mine. :c) Can't wait!
imasinnerimasaint 2 years ago
Ohhhh be still my beating heart, if only they could make up so breathlessly and violently. Love this scene, it is captured so perfectly as of the book, brought to life in fact . No one else could play Knightly now he is too hard an act to follow.
jules666888 2 years ago
Oh well it's worth the wait anyway isn't it. Have you seen it yet or just clips on net. The US get it on 24th of this month so they've had to wait. We got it in UK in October last year in four, 1 hour long episodes, so waiting for 1 a week was hard enough! Good luck

Wth! Lol at Mr. Elton. Reminds me a bit of Mr Collins from P&P, but more handsome :)

You havent a clue, have you emma?
princess3908 2 years ago
Wow....go Mr. Knightley! A very well-acted and well-written scene. The complexity and length of their relationship is made so clear....
DiscoLemonade11 2 years ago 7
@DiscoLemonade11
question: i read emma, but is mr. knightley supposed to be young handsome? i thought he was supposed to be a bit old and plain
phantomwaltz 2 years ago
eh well...tv doesn't tend to allow for old/plain romantic leads. i mean, look what they did with Henry in the Tudors.
I kinda look past it because I adore JLM so much, but I get where you're coming from
SeeThinkFall 2 years ago
JLM is the correct age for the character, who is supposed to be 37. He could also be considered plain in some lights, although I mean no offence to his fangirls. He wasn't ugly, and plain people become attractive when you grow to appreciate their characters.
imasinnerimasaint 2 years ago
@imasinnerimasaint Well, I'm one of his fangirls and I certainly do not think he is plain, let alone ugly. But people have different tastes. I think Blake Ritson is an absolute creep, while evryone seems to find him extremely attractive.
stancy85 2 years ago
Oh don't get me wrong. I personally think JLM is very attractive as Mr Knightley. I just meant that, he's not so ridiculously young and handsome (you know the type I mean) that he doesn't suit the character. I mean, personally, if I was Emma, I would definitely fall for him hard, but for me, his appearance grows on you until you get to the point when you can't believe you didn't think he was drop-dead-gorgeous at first, and yet, his personal beauty is not striking in and of itself.
imasinnerimasaint 2 years ago 4
Check out JLM in "Trainspotting" as Sick Boy and he is gorgeous for the first sighting. But I totally agree with you. His attractiveness grows on you as you see him act. I loved him as Eli Stone. I miss that series.
SnapeGirlUSA 2 years ago
I certainly did not mean to say that I thought he was ugly, just - not immediately striking. :c) Phantomwaltz is wrong anyway, because 37 is certainly not old (I'm 20 and my bf is 37, so I know it's not old), and there was no description of his appearance. I think JLM is plain enough that one is not astonished by his gorgeous looks at first sight and goodlooking enough that by the end of the movie I think many of us wish we were Emma, and he our Mr. Knightley.
imasinnerimasaint 2 years ago
Oh and I think Blake Ritson plays a creep very well, as Mr. Elton. He didn't do it for me as Edmund though because I kept on getting distracted by that damn fringe. His hair is badly done in this movie as well, too much gel. Fine for today but unlikely then - certainly not the fashion. He's goodlooking enough to a casual observer but I'm glad he was Elton and JLM Knightley and not the other way around. I don't trust his kind of astonishing good looks (at first sight) anyway.
imasinnerimasaint 2 years ago 2
I am just glad that Mr. Knightley instinctively knows that Emma is not in love with Elton and that she is just setting him up instead of the jealousy that ensues after Frank enters the picture and tries to set him up too.

this is true, it happened to me
jules666888 2 years ago

Elton. lol

I disagree.

MrsAnneWentworth 2 years ago 5
I really like this version of Emma. It's a bit more happy-go-lucky than the 1996 one and a lot more funny. At first, I wasn't sure about Johnny Lee Miller being cast as Knightley, since something about him seemed to soft and young, but now I see it as the goofier and less stern version of Knightley in 1996. HAHA, his argument with Emma over Harriet is hilarious! Ramola is a good Emma, since she's expressive enough (though sometimes too much so), and she's so pretty!
mcelderry100 2 years ago 49

And finally, thanks for the upload :)
mabobam 2 years ago 7
Nice fight, I thought this adaptation did a better job of justifying Emma's position--well, she deflected a little better, anyway.
Fujikorific 2 years ago 5
Thank you for posting this. While part of me wishes that the script didn't extrapolate so much--adding what wasn't there, for instance, like Emma's comments on Jane, Frank and herself being intertwined in "some strange way"--and I wish Romola Garai, whom I adore, wasn't quite so animated--I respect this treatment of the novel. It's like a fresh, enjoyable perspective. Will definitely be watching the other episodes. :-)
