  • Why is keeping the same pension the previous generation had, when the UK was a poorer country, an 'unjust subsidy'?

As for questioning your socialism, and my reference to the top 10%, that is where the lions share of the wealth of the last three decades has gone. Hence why it is strange to assume that a reduction in our pensions will favour the poorest. The richest 1% in the UK own 21% of the wealth. The richest 10% own 53%. There is more than enough wealth in the UK to provide for...

  • @murrayg What medication are you currently taking? Your ridiculous red herrings regarding the wealthy and blah, blah percentages are valid in some other argument, but not in this.

The fact is that selfish, mollycoddled, middle class careerists are having their inflated pensions subsidised by the taxes of those who are far less privileged! I have yet to read/hear anywhere, one genuine argument against taking that subsidy away. All i read/hear are self serving excuses about other issues!

  • Most of the public sector who subscribe to the pension scheme are middle class, on decent salaries. Why should poorly paid private sector workers subsidise their pensions?

Sally sounds desperate and insincere when she says, "we're here today.........for everybody". They are not! She is not! They want to keep their slice of the big pie, and sod the homeless, the poor and the sick who need the real help! I am a UCU member, but as a socialist, i am quite disgusted by this selfish escapade!

  • @door2yourheart I disagree. Its about ensuring that public sector workers get a few crumbs from the table of the bankers and financiers who are still living well despite having caused the crisis. Public sector workers should not be punished for a problem they did nothing to create. Labour already enacted pension reforms to tackle the impact of changing demographics on public sector pensions. This pension reform is about ideology - about pushing through the Thatcherite agenda to its bitter end.

  • @AliceSoundgarden Yes, everything this devious coalition hit mob do is about continuing the Thatcher instigated attacks on the public they so despise. I also agree that the pigs at the trough are the main cause of the financial crisis.

However, the validity of the strike is stated by the unions as being to protect public pensions, nothing else and nobody else. If as you suggest, the issue is wider than public sector pensions, perhaps UCU should make that clear! Till then NO!

  • @door2yourheart As I understand it Thatcher made secondary strikes illegal, so the UCU would be breaking the law if it went on strike for *all* pensions. As for your wider point - why not argue that the private sector should reunionise and recover its pensions, rather than that we should be screwed just because they have already? There is nothing 'socialist' about arguing for a situation where wealth is increasingly concentrated in the hands of the top 10%.

  • @murrayg We are not being "screwed", we are merely having an unjust, one sided subsidy removed. As for your bizarre reasoning that i am " arguing for a situation where wealth is increasingly concentrated in the hands of the top 10%.", sorry but you have lost me there!

Anyway good luck, (but let fairness prevail), in your mission to continue sucking personal financial benefits at the expense of so many less privileged workers. Oh and do not lecture me on what is/ is not socialist!

  • @door2yourheart ...our pensions and those in the private sector. I don't argue with your targeting redistribution, but there are more deserving targets than the workers of the UCU

  • @murrayg Pardon? So will the UCU be using those "more deserving targets" to justify their selfish claim for enhanced pensions subsidised by those less privileged? Well, yes, they already do, which makes their argument, by way of diversion, even more invalidl!

  • @AliceSoundgarden UCU wouldn't admit to that political agenda though, would they?! As for Ms Hunt wanting justice "for everyone", these careerists don't even support individual members, let alone non members! Over half of our branch members have left the UCU in the last few months, by the way! The only action our 'leaders' go along with, rather than instigate, are those that might raise their personal profile.

  • Many members didnt have enough time to put their ballots in. I missed mine but Im in favour of this action.
