I just saw the ESPN special on the legacy of the Hurricanes. Michael Irvin said BYU did not belong to be on the same field. The game spoke for itself. BYU dominated in the stats, they even turned the ball over 5 times (Miami turned it over 3 times). A great win, which perhaps prevented Miami from another possible national championship.

I went to BYU for undergrad, and Miami for graduate school, so I find this game particularly interesting. I love both teams, but I bleed blue. I sure hope that the two schools will start up a series now that BYU is independent.

@subjoy1 This game was played in Ty's junior year. Detmer also beat Colorado in the 1988 Freedom Bowl - as a freshman - on now Congressman Jason Chaffetz's game winning FG. (Sean Covey, Stephen Covey's son - "7 Habits" author; Franklin Covey co-founder, was the starter in that game). CU went onto win the Nat'l Championship in 1990 w/ the same core of players that BYU and Detmer beat in '88. Miami had previously won the 1989 championship; and was the odds-on favorite to repeat in 1990.

Detmer was skinny.. Skinny and Awesome.. I would take Detmer for a college quarter back over anyone before or after. He makes Tim Tbag Tebow look stupid. This was last time a number one team will make the trip to Provo or to the University of Utah to open their season. BYU is not a fun place to play. It is all that root beer and caffeine free Coke they be pounding. Detmer like Jim Mcmahon partied hard. The honor code did not apply when it came to those two. My friend sold Ty weed. Rasta QB!

I was there. This game got Ty Detmer the Heisman trophy. UM was over confident and thought they were too good for anybody. Detmer and crew outplayed UM that game. Detmer went on to win all the games after that except the Holiday bowl when he was intentionally knocked out of the game with two separated shoulders and this with only two starters on the line and only one starting back, Matt Belini.

Look, I'm not here to hate on BYU or their over-age players who like they're 28 years-old. Once saw a dude on the BYU basketball team who looked like my 40 year-old high school math teacher. I'm just saying that this win against the "U" wasn't all that impressive when you consider what happened afterward.

BTW, I'm a big fan of the BYU women's volleyball team. Had a chance to catch 6 of their home games on satellite TV. Mormon girls in hot-pants. Yeessss! Go Cougars!

Big deal. This same BYU team got smashed by (my team) Texas A&M 64-14 in the Holiday Bowl. Afterwards, Levell Edwards (BYU's then coach) refused to shake hands with Aggie coach RC Slocum because he felt A&M ran up on the score. Hey, Edwards, how about "coaching" some defense? BYU also lost to Hawaii, a team who was nicknamed "The Rainbows." LOL! Sorry if I'm not that impressed . . .

This season started great, but ended with a horrible loss to Texas A&M where they took out both of Detmer's shoulders. At least BYU got payback against a Big XII South school in 09.

Anyway, Detmer was a very good scrambler and knew how to escape pursuit. The play where two Miami defenders bump head could sum up the whole game on offense. Defense did a great job as well. 80s and 90s BYU defenses don't get enough credit.

In case you didn't notice the "haha" meant "in jest."

The main reasons we lost were:

1) Dennis Erickosn spent the entire off-season deliberately trying to change Miami's bravado and swagger to a "nice guy" style. This utterly backfired and he realized this so that by the end of the season, we played our style and destroyed #4 TX in the Cotton Bowl, 46-3.

2) BYU was very well-prepared for our offense and Detmer played the game of his life., one of the great performances ever in CFB.
