  • Larry Carlton at his finest in my not so humble opinion.

  • guitar I'm sorry! I need to proof-read more things before I send them!

  • These are great musicians loving the great music they make---nice, sweet, jazz, with ALL OFTHE INSTRUMENTS PROMINENT AND CLEARLY HEARD! I think they are awesome! BobbyK sorry for caps--they got put on by accident Anyway, this band plays great music that is very technical--especially the awesome guiyar polaying!

  • CK! Love you forever!

  • R.I.P. Chris Kent.

  • It just hitting the news that Chris Kent has passed away from cancer. RIP to a great player!

  • Has anyone else noticed that in all the videos of this concert you occasionally hear a man speaking? I don't think it's Larry, because one of the times his face was in the picture.

  • @GryptpypeThynne

    It's a bootleg :-)

    Bob

  • @bobjazz11 In that case, congrats on the sound quality!

  • the tele has definitely been turned down here - it's naturally a very bright guitar - very trebley so you have turn down the top end if you want a jazzish sound

  • A lot of discussion in the comments about the Tele ... actually, I believe the axe is a custom-made Valley Arts guitar ... looks like a Tele ...

  • While I agree that touch and playing style can dramatically effect tone, the right amp with the right settings can also darken the tone of a Tele. Larry has had numerous custom Dumble amps made.

Honestly, the 335 sounds fuller. Larry definitely tones down the brightness of the Tele with lower tone setting and using primarily the neck pickup.

  • Man, that bass solo was... MIND BLOWING!

  • This performance shows that it's not the instrument but the person that makes the tone. Larry Carlton is known for playing a Gibson ES 335 guitar, but makes a Telecaster sound like he is known to sound. Too many of us are searching for the tone, but it's already in our hands. This band is wonderful!

  • @veeoleary You said that perfectly! Great explanation!

  • @veeoleary this is my dads brother

  • @veeoleary I'd still have identified that as a telecaster sight unseen (I've played both). The tele is a solid block of hard timber, so you get a pure string tone. The 335 has a hollow structure which contributes something else to the final sound, probably a mellower tone. All this assumes that the amp is giving a faithful reproduction of the instrument's original sound, of course, with no coloration (a big assumption).

  • Wow!! What a tone!

  • very nice ! です.

  • Larry could make a board with rubber bands sound great! Bravo! Chris Kent is my favorite "tour with Larry" bassist too - what a talent. What can you say? Awesome musicians all around!

  • any way i can get an mp3 of this? or is it on a cd or something? i must have it damnit.

  • An amazing awesome incredible fantastic stupendous fabulous ad infinitum group of musicians!!!

  • At 1:05 he takes it to a whole. notha. level.

  • great

  • Actually, Larry will use tele's and strats for their ability to cut through the accompanying instruments, these guitars are the only types that can sing and make it through with the highs of the keyboards and not be muddy. He is quoted as saying this in some older guitar player mags.

  • Presumably this was performed as a tribute to Zachary Breaux who died in this year trying to save a drowning swimmer whilst on holiday in Miami. I don't know much about Larry but maybe he switched guitar to get the jazz sound he needed for the tribute.

  • That was actually at the Montreaux Jazz Festival back in 1997. Larry got the Tele because he wanted a very classic, traditional Tele. He has said in interviews that he just couldn't get into it though.

  • who is this pianist?

  • Great! I want a frickin telly!

  • Simply superb!!

  • totaly amazing !!!

  • First time I ever heard this was today and I must say I'm hooked !!!

  • Yeow! What a GREAT video. It would have been so great to be there live.
