each card is really two cards would be the simplest explanation... all the 8 of diamonds cards are shorter than the other cards, so you can easily flick through them and show them all being different and miss the 8 of diamonds every time... if that makes sense...

1) You have a stripper Deck

2) He has a Svengali Deck... or mirage deck.

Strippers have shaved edges so you can pull their card from the middle when its inserted wrong way around.

Svengali has every second card (8 of diamonds shaved) so you can riffle through any of the cards.

its a Svengali deck. the cards(8 of diamonds) are cut shorter than the rest of the cards allowing you to flip/cut/split the deck under the multiple eights. Google Svengali if you want to see.

it is a cheat deck, with 8 of diamonds in every step (3,8,King,8,Queen,8,10,8), and then the 8 of diamonds is a little bit shorter then all the rest, so we cant se them from the front, but it will always be the back card. It's difficoult to explain. Anyway it's a nice trick heh
