  • Human scant? That's gross dude. Have we stooped this low to considere it compost. Oh...and yeah... composting does stink and bad.

  • does a worm bin smell?

im planning on keeping one in my room

  • @lolustupid

Set up properly, worm bins have no smell.

  • @lolustupid If your compost is balanced with enough Nitrogen based products(fruit, veggies) and Carbon based producs(Cardboard, paper etc) then there shouldnt be any foul odors.Actually Ive noticed that it gives off a nice "outdoors smell" If your mixture for example has too much nitrogen, Anerobic bacteria will create a foul odor. Good luck with your bin.. hope this little bit of info helps. Im still learning myself.

  • Hey is there a thermometer I could use to check the temperature inside the bin? what do you recomend

  • @marito001

    Basic Min/Max Thermometer works well

  • I put banana peals into my bin and it's starting to smell.

I can put banana peels into the worm bin right?

  • @XsmashX1

Yep, banana peels are fine. If you smell them, you don't have enough damp bedding on top of them.

  • @tortaboy Thats it

  • @XsmashX1 Keep the peels but make sure your mixture is balanced with enough paper or cardboard. The foul smell is telling you that there is an imbalance which may result in slower decomposition and the release of PH altering chemicals.

  • Will they eat snake droppings?

  • Worms will eat any scat. The problem with scat from carnivores is that you have possible cross contamination problems.

Dog, cat, human, snake...If you compost feces from any of these, make SURE the worm casts do not make contact with any food source. Ornamental plants only!

  • i kept mine in the garage until the temp inside the bin got to 90 then i brought them back in the house. They say keep temp at about 78 will keep them happy ...a better breeding enviroment . thanks for the info.

  • You are very welcome.

  • Thank you for this-- I just started my worm bin in my garage (plastic bin). I have been concerned about this coming summer with the heat (I live in NC). I think I should be ok- I'll make sure to feel the bin often and if I get too worried, I'll bring them inside! Thank you!!!

  • The point is that many people think worms die because of too warm temps. Not usually the case. Worms die because of radiant heat, not ambient air temperature. If the worm bin gets warm to the touch, it is the equivalent of frying your worms inside.

    Thanks for asking.

  • What was the point of this? Just asking.
