I have this album on vinyl. A 2 record masterpiece. It is called "Stars and Stripes Forever" and has interview with Vassar Clements. If you can find it, I highly recommend it. Ironically the title track is about 30 seconds long. It sounds like maybe a sound check. Great long song on the album about a mountain boy winning a fiddle contest in Georgia. Superb stuff.

Agreed, we can absolutely give Horton credit for making the song a hit, but Driftwood gets the credit for writing it. Like yourself, Driftwood also loved U.S. history. Jimmy wrote this song to make learning  fun for a high school history class he was teaching in the 1950's. The words are set to a well known fiddle tune, "The 8'th Of January."
