...But that stand is basic in Wing Chun. In other chinese styles basic stand is horse Ma Bu (in chinese putunhua transcription orthography "Ma Bu" is right).
@666zardoz I quite disagree with Master Wong about Ma Bo. Ma Bo is not a stance, just a training position to reinforce your legs. In real fight, stance is different, and very effective. Wing Chun IS really effective in real fight, because it's not a sport like boxing or karate, but an art made to kill. But of course you cannot judge with a 5 minute first lesson.
@666vardoz if you think wing chun is not gonna get it done in the real world, or that it's based on technical stances, you've not had experience with decent instruction, maybe some diploma mill grads. I'ts a set of principles, not a bunch of techniques. It's about controlling pressure, operating from a strong power base. (VCK NZ) hav a long history of training door/security staff to destroy the balance of & remove aggro idiots from the premises/events. It's very fuc%1ng real world on the door.
@wazinwanaka Let me be clear that I am NOT hating on wing chun or Master Wong. I like the close quarters trapping, low kicks, etc. I just want people that have never been on the receiving end of a gut punch to know that training in a system can be detrimental if that system doesn't address adrenaline situations like sudden violence, ground fighting, etc: Martial arts is about violence - the response to that violence, and the ability and willingness to unapologetically inflict violence on others.
@666zardoz All that is true, where we disagree is your contention that "wing chun just doesn't get it done in a real world sudden violent attack..." imo (& experience) that is a mistaken belief. (much of what master Wong espouses I also disagree with. Imo his system relies too much on speed and trapping, which is fine if you're stronger/faster, but when your under pressure from a faster stronger person, then you need a solid foundation & strong 'uprooting' skills to nullify attackers advantages
@wazinwanaka Sounds like you have some "hands on" experience. :) Serious question: does wing chun have any ground game? I don't mean BJJ submissions - I mean specific strategies for getting off the ground, trapping on the ground, etc...
I like Master Wong- he is genuine in his ability, generous with his information, and very entertaining! However, Wing chin just doesn't get it done in a real world sudden violent attack, nor do most other martial systems. Any system based on overly technical stances, hand placement, etc is dead on arrival. Stick with styles that are based on natural stances and reflexes - when the @&%! hits the fan all the fancy fine motor skill stuff literally disappears off of your physiological radar...
@666zardoz Its not about the style, stances, blocks its about the Man who is practicing it. For example people who are training Kung Fu two times in a week will get beaten up in real live. But people who are practicing Wing Chun 4-5 times in the week, with fast attacks and real hits it will work. If you get one bad hit you will not miss the block again. Its learning by doing for sure blocking in Wing Chun is very hard but its manageable if you just train it often enough.
@NiaoSun It's about the person AND the style - U do what you train to do - or try to do what ur trained to do. I'm no "master", but have sparred full contact +/- 25 times (that doesn't count 100 or so dojo sparring sessions); also been in 5 street fights: In EVERY real fight I resorted to gross motor skills - I prevailed 90% of the time due to basic principles: NO fine motor skills, complex joint locks, precise stances, chi, etc. Getting slugged in the mouth & spitting blood changes everything!
@666zardoz I know that street fights are totally different than training Sparrings. That's the reason why most Masters in Martial Arts dont even try to grab, block any attack. There just trying to avoid the attack and give them one really bad hit, for example ( Hit in the eyes, chest or in the balls xD) the main idea is to survive they dont care much about fighting with Style. So there using "gross moto skills" too but with a little bit technique.
@666zardoz That is assuming that the person themselves aren't mentally strong enough to keep calm during something like that. If they can stay calm, I'm sure they can remember their training.
@vicktrickly72 Nothing personal, but I'm almost 100% sure you've never been in a fight...never had the #&%! knocked out of you...right? Watching funny videos of other people demonstrating impractical techniques does not qualify you to assume they will remember their training - get some real training - maybe Krav Maga or KFM - get hit a few times - then we can talk. Street fighters don't give a GD about dojo mojo - they will attack U in a violent and unorthodox fashion that will rock your world.
@666zardoz On the contrary, I've had my world rocked countless times. I've been training myself in martial arts styles, at home, and merely watching something on the internet DOES count. I know of krav maga and the dirty technique it uses, I've seen several demonstrations on how to use it and I'm not sure I like it, and can manage without it. You seem to have much confidence that a simple street fighter. Why, have you gotten your ass handed to you by one lately? =D
@vicktrickly72 You've seen several demonstrations? I've seen several rocket launches, but I'm not an astronaut. It's as impractical to train solo in martial arts as it is to train yourself to dance the tango by yourself....yes, it really does take two to tango! And yes, I have had my ass handed to me - no apologies - I never said I was a bad ass, or "Master" or such... But I have years of traditional training, nontraditional training, and actual fights. Again: get some real experience.
@666zardoz None of these things you say can really apply to me for unknown reasons. Really though, anything is possible. It is possible to have what it takes to defeat a traditionally trained fighter equipped with just self training. Depends lots on the amount of training.
@vicktrickly72 Hey, I respect that you are interested in this stuff, but you simply cannot train alone. Please, go to a school (please no karate, kung fu. aikido, or tae kwon do), do some sparring so you at least know what it's like to get hit - the re-think "dirty" techniques - it may just save your life some day.
@666zardoz Yes you cannnnnn =). I do it all the time and my technique DOES get better on my own ^^.
Heheh really it IS dirty, sure it can save my life but it could wreck someone elses, and I'm a selfless person, it hurts me to hurt others. There has never been a time where I've hurt someone and felt good about it EVEN IF they let me do it X). Sometimes it just rips my ego apart =D, don't really know what is wrong or right with me. Hope my word is good enough for ya.
@vicktrickly72 You sound like a nice person...my favorite kind! It's because your nice that I hope you are not too naive about what you think you can do - I'm not trying to sound like an a-hole - I just know (yes, from actual experience) that you gotta hit, and get hit, to have any clue what self defense is - I'm reminded twice a week when I go to class how little I know! At least you're doing something - keep it up, and stay safe.
@vicktrickly72 Just re-read your response to make sure I get where you're coming from... You don't like "dirty techniques"??? JFC!!! Fighting is nasty, violent, mean stuff - I LOVE dirty techniques - while you are trying to parry a punch (look it up), I will suddenly scream in your face and punch your throat - well, not you personally - just making a point: Forget the mystical kung foolishness - self defense (not sparring) is about unbridled VIOLENCE - go get some training - get hit - get real!
@666zardoz dude u r not in ancient china, when u get in to a sudden fight u just use what ever is right for this moment without stances und stuff like that. Don't be closed minded.
@tengokunoshi Friend, I'm the opposite of closed minded - I speak from being in actual fights - yes, U respond in the moment, so U better train in a style that trains U to respond in the moment, not ancient theory and dogma... just because a style is ancient doesn't make it better. Have U every been assaulted? Ever been slapped on the ear/spit blood/kicked in the nuts? I have - it's a game changer... So: Why even do the "stances and stuff like that?" if they don't work?!?! Just sayin'... :)
@tengokunoshi Because: they don't work... Yes, I fight real "masters" daily, right after I slay dragons and save damsels in distress. It's funny that guys like Bas Rutten don't feel the need to call themselves masters - they just kick ass and don't even bother to take names. So, chill out - you seem to be defending all this "master" stuff for no reason - let's just exchange ideas and agree to disagree - we both obviously share a passion for martial arts.
@666zardoz cool :D where u find dragons, I wanna take one too :P
Am not defending "the master" stuff but I like all the Tai Chi, Wing Chun and of course Drunken Fist style (coz u can be drunk ass and kick ass, double fun :D)
I love the idea of using this Chi energy, coz it seems to be a powerful stuff. So why not stances and shit, it just don't work immediately that's smtn else. If u want martial arts for immediate use learn Ju Do & Kick Boxing or MMA.
@tengokunoshi The only dragons in my life are my junior high students! I also like Tai Chi (several years of it) as well as couple intense years of Shaolin Hung Gar Tiger Crane, and off and on with Ba Gua - all taught by bonified lineage instructors - then 3 yrs JKD - then got into a sort of "Fight Club" for 12 terrible months and many full contact fights - it really changed my perspective! Doing KFM now and it's the best self defense I've ever experienced. I also prefer Dos Equis... :P
research hollow position. There's a reason goat stance is powerful. Its because its utilizes hollow position, its aligning the spine the same way a gymnast would. You have no idea what natural is, thats why talk like this. Hollow position is natural, its when your abs are actually being utilized to hold your spine perfectly straight. This alignment is the most powerful structure in biophysics when dealing with force applied from the front, it effectively deflects the force...
@alawha I don't care about the goat stance because I'm not going to fight your fight - I will drop & punch your crotch, tackle U, bite U, then get up & stomp on your head... The weakness of almost all systems is that they train you to fight people assuming that will fight by their rules - there's an old saying, "Never box a boxer." As a newbie I once defeated a 3rd degree karate guy by simply tackling him, mounting him, & punching him once in the mouth - I guess they don't do that in the dojo.
@tengokunoshi Jeez, why the personal attack? I promise you I am not cool, or disillusioned into thinking I am... The fact that I have kicked some ass is simply a factual statement - the fact that I have had my ass royally stomped is also a factual statement. I am a regular guy who is about as intimidating as Justin Bieber - I was viciously bullied in school, and as an adult I have ensured that it won't happen. Let's just talk self defense and keep it friendly - or else... JK!!! :)
@alawha Wow, you are very articulate. Who can defend themselves against such a well reasoned argument as LMAO? You are today's winner of the YouTube award for most devastating verbal epic fail (I know- that's so 2010) Perhaps you fight the way you argue your point? Poorly, ineffectively, and...oh never mind - can't we all just get along?
"The 4th principle is that it is important to hit without getting hit. u need 2 be mentally alive. u need 2 establish a "safe zone" between u and ur opponent. The safe zone is approx. 18" between u and opponent. Dont let ur opponent move into this safe zone. to be able to shift and move at the moment when ur opponent attempts 2 close the gap, u adjust the distance between u and the opponent.
