Once in the brain(which is when you SEE symptoms) the disease is incurable, and is spread to other animals through saliva as the animal hits the "aggressive" or "dumb" stages, and biting tends to happen. Early during the incubation period, there is a series of post-exposure rabies vaccinations that can be given.
The pre-exposure rabies vaccination is available to people who work in zoonoses risk environments, such as zookeepers, veterinarians, and AEO's.
Risks/complications aren't the problem, it's more the expense...which is a couple-hundred for the vaccine series. It's 3 shots, spaced out over about a month. It's boosted every few years as needed, which is determined by blood testing every 2 years. I've just recently finished mine (I'm an AEO).

A forgotten disease because rabies was virtually eradicated in the western world long ago. Most cases today come from Africa and India. In India, it's due to the large numbers of stray dogs.

Don`t hate the Japs, hate the government who decides to murder. Many Jap civilians (and even a few military/navy/airforce dudes) opposed the killing, but the Jap government went on with it, despite opposition from the civilians and other countries. Some Japs own dogs and love them, and during this period of time before the olympics, respectable and decent people had their beloved dogs yanked from their hands and beaten with clubs right in front of their eyes.

There is not a cure for rabies. if you know of one go ahead and go collect your nobel prize because no one else knows about it. There is a vaccine, but that can only prevent the virus from spreading. Once bitten you only have about 36 hours for treatment or it will spread. If symptoms start then it has hold of you and then you die.

The incubation period of the disease is usually a few months in humans, depending on the distance the virus must travel to reach the central nervous system. Once the rabies virus reaches the central nervous system and symptoms begin to show, the infection is effectively untreatable and usually fatal within days,but u got till it reaches the nervous system for treatment not 36 hrs.

The beating/killing of the dogs with sticks is from China, where they fear the disease but are too cheap to test animals for it..so they just kill them all. They have even forced owners to bring their pets in for slaughter.

Capturing an animal with rabies is simply a BAD idea! Theyre very dangerous and unpredictable. Trying to catch a rabid animal is an accident waiting to happen, and; 3.) There is a not a "cure" for rabies. You can innulate animals for it to prevent them from getting it. But once they have the virus, thats it...

Thye should do Rabies block drops like we have the the US. Now we have not completely eradicated Rabies but our cases of the disease are few. What happens is Blocks of food are drop that have the rabies vaccine in them and wild life eat it. Geared towards Raccons & skunks.. It's like vaccinating them. Wonder if it would help other countries. Dogs & Cats still must be vaccinated by your DVM. I worked for a DVM that use to drop in Texas. HE would get air sick but still did it. What a guy.

It's true that raccoons can often carry rabies, but the vast majority of modern human cases of rabies are caused by bats. Even if you just find a bat in your home but see no evidence of a bite, it's recommended that you and anyone else living in the house see a doctor just in case.
At any rate, I'd go in to get the proper vaccinations if I was bitten by any wild animal (or a stray whose history I couldn't confirm), given that the virus can infect almost all mammals.

Takes between one and three months for the symptoms to show up in humans (on average; in rare cases, it'll take up to a year). It might be a good idea to go get a shot now, just in case -- it's been a while, but it would still be better to get one. Getting scratched by a bat isn't an instant death sentence, though... it's unlikely that you'd have rabies, especially if you didn't get bitten. It's possible the scratches weren't even from the bat. See a doctor just to be safe, though.

The bat is the only animal that you don't have to be bit by, it can actually carry it in its mucus/saliva making even touching it dangerous.

All infected animals carry it in their saliva, which is why it's often the bite that transmits the disease. It's not always a bite that does it, though... if the animal is drooling on itself and one gets the saliva or mucous on their skin, then touches their own eyes, nose, mouth or an open wound, they can catch it. I would imagine that touching an infected cat would be pretty dangerous, since they're always licking themselves.

A lot of human cases of rabies could probably be prevented if people were educated on the early warning signs of the disease. It would also be a good idea to correct people's misconceptions about the infection.
In real life, rabies isn't always like Cujo. Some animals will become extremely vicious, others will show some degree of anxiety (and may nip, but won't attack), and, paradoxically, you'll get the occasional animal that actually becomes more friendly. (cont.)

A vaccine is not a cure. It is prevention to prevent the rabies from developing. Once the actual rabies disease has occured there is nothing that can be done. There only 6 documented cases of people surviving rabies after developing it.

no its not a cure. What they do is put the person in a coma so that the virus is slowed down. ANd the treatment can work better. But people say the reason she survived was that the dose she received from the bat was far from her brain. It was only a small bite on the end of her finger. Most of the time rabies bites are huge and nasty. The girl got lucky they tried this procedure on someone else but they died

A forgotten disease because rabies was virtually eradicated in the western world long ago. Most cases today come from Africa and India. In India, it's due to the large numbers of stray dogs.
I don't subscribe to the idea that the West is somehow responsible for its own rabies problem, AND those of Africa and Asia. I believe in helping those in need, but only as charity... not from a sense of duty or obligation.
India could help by doing something about its stray dog problem. Self-help!
