  • Alex's solo in the middle is orgasmic

  • masterpiece.

  • I have this on cassette

  • Who cares what Rolling Stone says. The only thing that magazine is good for is kindling for my fireplace. The man was born to play guitar. There are other guys that can play as well though, but he is my personal favorite. And he has received many accolades from real guitar magazines.

  • ISSO NÃO É UMA MUSICA E SIM UMA OBRA PRIMA DO ROCK, DA MAIOR BANDA DE ROCK DE TODOS OS TEMPOS, OS MELHORES MUSICOS , QUE MOSTRAM COMO SE TOCA E BRILHANTEMENTE BEM UM INSTRUMENTO, MARAVILHOSO DEMAIS ISSO É RUSH

  • FYI: the file is a little messed up at the end.

This is hands-down the best version of La Villa Strangiato out there. Much better than the studio cut; Lifeson is simply amazing here. Of all the live or studio versions he's played, this one is simply the best.

The transitions are so subtle and smooth that I'm at a loss for words.

This track truly highlights what a master of guitar, Alex Lifeson is.

    Absolutely my favorite Rush song.

  • The left and right channels seem to be reversed.

  • holy shit this is amazing

  • No thumbs down for this masterpiece, well there really couldn't be could there :)

  • I love the guitar solo in this......not heard a better version!! This was my 1st, and still my fave Rush album :)

  • The Beatles and Rush are two totally different fruits from the same tree, folks... The Beatles may not have always had the intricacy of these virtuoso gentlemen but they were damn good musicians and they remain the cornerstone of my classic rock collection. There is a reason why they're remembered after so many years, and same with Rush.

In any case, whether this style or theirs appeals to you more depends mostly on you alone. I? Well, I'm content with having both. Keep on rocking folks.

  • 5:21 gets me... every... time.

  • @riles9999 Me too. Close the lights, turn it up and imagine you're someplace else. I love this live album.

  • A.L., his guitar tech and the sound engineer, on this night, were as close to perfect as can be when recording sound from vibrating strings, running those beautiful notes thru a 24 track mixing board then captured on electro mag tape (back then). Just Awesome. Only other live recording of guitar (in my opinion) that comes close; check out Strangers in the Night by UFO with another virtuoso player - Michael Schenker. I highly recommend any aspiring guitarist study these 2 intensely! Cheers

  • Rush became my fav band way back in '76 when I first heard their debut album then 2112 was in my (u youngsters will laugh) 8 Track player in my car all thru my junior year of H.S. Then the Masterpiece; Hemisphere's around '78? But D.J.'s wouldn't give play to L.V.S., had to keep songs under 4 mins (to sell most ad time$). I've been a guitar player for many years - A.L. will Always be in my Top 5 due to his Creative Genius. This Solo (live version best of course) takes listener on quite a ride!

  • the best.

  • if only these guys could play.........sigh.

  • The Beatles are definitely more influential, but musically Rush blows them into next week...it's not even close. Neil Peart vs. Ringo Starr? I chuckle just thinking about it.

  • Alex Lifeson at his best !

  • that solo makes me want to play the guitar :D

  • what does Geddy Lee sing at 7:03? I've always wondered that..

  • @Italianboy225

It's part of a nursery rhyme...

From the back cover of the original album cover:

    “Patty-cake, patty cake,

Mother’s going to buy you shoes,

Father’s going to buy you socks,

Baby’s going to have red cheeks.”

That's the loose translation of the Danforth and Pape sectiion. If I'm not mistaken, Geddy sang it in Dutch. Could be wrong on that.

  • I agree, but love both.

  • I have seen RUSH 16 times over the years since 1983....continues to be the best band on the planet, they still don't get the credit they deserve from mainstream music industry, even though they have selling out arenas around the world for 25 years.....those music bigshots just show they dont know shit.....

  • 4:00 to 5:33. that's one badass fuckin' solo. been listening to this song for decades and that solo always makes me feel like i did when i first heard it.

  • Rush at their best imo.

  • Bought this album when it first came out, loved everything about it, especially La Villa Strangiatto! Greatest band EVER assembled.

  • The song intro is one of my fave pieces of music in any capacity.

  • The one thing that makes Canada badass...

  • @xXdEaThSeQuEnCeXx ...best comment ever..jaja

  • THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST TRACKS EVER.... AND THE BEST THREE PEICES EVER

  • @Gcrash95 I believe he is singing patty cake, but I forgot what language it is in.

  • I have this concert on video, its incredible to say the least.

  • I freaking love this song.

  • Theme song of my life... don't need any lyrics to convey the emotions in this masterpiece.

  • There is live footage of this song and the whole concert on VHS Just have to LOOK AROUND FOR IT!!! Love rush! Rush N Roll!!

  • Geddy is fucking high

  • god save me, my mind has just exploded

  • Is this in video anywhere? A lot of other exit stage left songs are recorded...

  • @x1te This was originally put on VHS back in the day if you hunt around at flea markets maybe you can get lucky and find you a copy!

  • @x1te I HAVE A COPY

  • @666767 Amazing! Any chance you can get it up on youtube?

  • R U S H ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

  • HD audio? more like "HQ"...

  • The best thing Lifeson's done on guitar ever ? Probably so ...absolutely incredible, anybody who dismissed Lifeson as being shadowed by the other two should definitely give this masterpiece a listen

  • God Alex's solo sounds like a freakin piano. Its that insane!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The solo's in this song, just absolutely: LEGENDARY!

  • absolutely the best live song i have ever heard my band in college rehersed this song for two months before we got it right, Alex, Getty, and Neil you are the best!!!!!

  • Even better live than in studio. Alex just OWNED this song. One of my favorite Rush tunes. Thanks for posting. It's too bad the concert footage wasn't available.

  • Oh, also, If one can comprehend and play this tune on the drums complete they could just about probably do anything.

    ......´*•.¸(´*•.¸ ¸.•*´)¸.•*´

    «´¨`•HarmonicalTap•´¨`»

    ...... .•*´(¸.•*´ `*•.¸)`*•.¸`

  • @HarmonicalTap damn right....

  • Yes, this is the one, Thanx for the post m8. I've been looking for this one. Seeing the live performance would be awesome too, lol..

I studied this tune for 20 yrs. Flawless yet quite complex, Took 10 years to comprehend this piece. When I was learning guitar in 1981 this video ESL blew my mind. I'm grateful Rush is 1 of my influences.

The world needs more musicians on stage influenced by the legends

and less musicians on stage acting like the legends.

  • i hate 9:38

  • My absolute fave Rush song!

  • Hey, this Alex's solo is even greater than on the studio version!

  • One of the most soul stretching solos in rock. you can feel it in your hart.

  • Omg, Alex takes it in this song man.

  • Alex... oh my god. Words just cannot describe how much he is ROCKIN' this song. All of them are JAMMING great, but Alex owns this song. <3

  • The best of the best right here. Proof positive that a song doesn't need words to move you. My two and a half year old son loves this song.

  • I've been a shredder type guitarist for over twenty years, but Alexs' main solo to this song (especially this recording of it) still causes me to tear up. Its so wonderful!

  • Hey!! This is one of my favourites too. I think Rush have the power to send you on another planets in other worlds.

    Thank you for your comment.

    Check the other songs too.

  • @VikdeRock

Thanks for posting this. Perhaps Alex's greatest solo ever. Just went searching and to find it in such great quality on the sound... you are a scholar and a gentleman.

  • @VikdeRock

Did anyone here see that Rolling Stone Magazene voted Alex Leifson to be number 98 in the top 100 guitarists of all time? I can't believe they'd rate him that low! OMG! What an insult. IMO he's #1! Nobody can play like this man can! What do you think?

  • @PAULNIEM ... I think being shunned by the establishment is something all three of them wear as a badge of honor. The greatest concentration of talent in three guys ever!

  • Thank You very much for posting this song! Rush is my favorite band after the Beatles. I have seen Rush 10 times in concert over the years. My favorite Rush years are from 1974-1984. Exit Stage Left was the first Rush album I owned back when I was a sophmore in high school in 1981. They have to be one of the most talented rock bands in history. This song is so incredible. It always blows me away. Every time I hear it, I just want to crank up the volume all the way! Thanks again. Cheers.

  • @letmusicfillyoursoul me to i love hemispheres album one of the best i think.peace

  • @letmusicfillyoursoul i think this is a total masterpiece of rock music... everywhere and anywhere you can feel this solo touching you heart... i only regret that in 1981 i wasn't still born... i'd like to see them on stage but here in italy it's hard to see such great concerts.... this make me angry... :P peace

  • @letmusicfillyoursoul Yes, Beatles THEN Rush.

    My top 5 would be

    1.Beatles

2.Beach Boys (Just Brian Wilson for Pet sounds and SMiLE)

    3.Led Zeppelin

    4. Rush

    5. Queen

  • @ClassicRockerSr101 Beatles better than rush??? Oh my god, you´re drunk.

  • @RushALMM I love rush, but I can't take your comment to heart after I read your username :P
