  • lol i remember buying a diablo bat just because he had one, scored my first 50 with it....always loved watching him bat

  • I loved his style of batting. He was a class act. I stopped liking batsmen any more 'coz i feel when i like them they under achieve :(. I loved watching Damien Martin and Saeed Anwar. Both were class acts, brilliant batsmen, but underachievers.

  • a class cricketer. he was a scapegoat twice. south africa 94 and after the ashes in 2005

  • @damo24now agree neither were his fault, in the 94 series he still had his chance but many other players managed to have killer summers like Bevan and Blewett.05 ashes were a stupid call considering his form leading into the Ashes and also the fact that about half a dozen others should have been dropped as well

  • great cricketer, enjoyed watching him bat

  • the only thing about martyn i liked was his bat, i really didnt like him he is my 2nd most disliked cricketer behind ponting

  • @jmsschooner Well your a fuckwit then arent you

  • if we'd have axed someone like Damian Martyn years ago... & bought on greater younger players... we wouldnt be so suffering in pain now.

  • i always had the feeling through his career that Damien Martyn was never 100% committed. he was cold (form wise) more often than he was hot. 2005 ashes he was a passenger, along with at least half a dozen other different test series. This gimp kept the likes of Brad Hodge & David Hussey from ever having a succesful test career... Ive never missed him.... sorry Damien Martyn lovers... but he just was never lovable to me....!

  • @mickjoG It's not about personal love or hate. Martyn was a player of high-quality and anyone who followed him for the length of his career could appreciate that. In the sub-continent against spin, or when Australia were struggling at 29/5 against the Kiwis, it was Martyn that came to the rescue. I think he's one of the best players of the post-Taylor era who never got his rightful due. Ditto for Gillespie. And I am not even an Australian, so trust me to be neutral on internal team politics.

  • 2:00 yeah baby!

  • The most stylist batsmen to play for Australia, best hands and proved every time he played on the Sub Continent.

Superb player and a classy exit for the World Stage

  • He is my fav batsman, This video understands me a lot abt his ret.

He can play for some more yrs, bt bad form discourages him n forced him to get back to home. WE WILL MISS U MARTO .. BE HAPPY

  • Well Damien is back playing for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL...all the best!!

  • I have followed Damien Martyn's career since he first started in 1992. I have never missed a game he played, and the truth of it is that he wasn't the best player, he was terribly inconsistent, played rash shots, and never lived up to expectations. What he did have however was grace, an effortless way of playing that i dont think we will see again for a long time.

  • he quit cos he was tired of sucking pole in the australian dressing room. He was the official pole sucker in the team. Ask Shane Warne!

  • he was my favourite batsman. i am not australian. in the world cup 2003 final in johannesburg, his slash hit 6 of a yorker length delivery from ashish nehra to the square of the wicket is the most amazing cricket shot i have ever seen. he was batting with and injured hand i remember. i shall miss him in cricket.

  • The classy batsman Australia has ever produced and my favourate batsman after sachin tendulkar

  • truly a classy batsman

  • Isn't it weird to hear a bloke who's batting always seemed so effortless say that he retired as he felt he wasn't 100% committed to doing the hard things required to continue as he had been. Shows how much work some of these "effortless" style players in any sport put in to perfect their style.

I love the way he gets a bit peeved about the "M.I.A" comment about the 2 weeks after his retirement. He'd made a clean cut and left. Good on him. No "exclusive" for Ch 9 for 6 weeks.

  • what a team player! wish players in the Pak team had this kind of unselfishness and team spirit.

  • Martyn got out from getting caught at backward point/gully/slip about 95% of the time lol. His last wicket was caught at?? He was a classy batsmen though and could turn it on when needed

  • he lives in perth becuase his house has destroyed in cyclone Tracy and now this. poor damien

  • He was like 3... im sure he got over it!!!

  • I bet he quit cause after the Pakistanian ICC champions trophy the Death Threats

  • does anyone know the background music??

  • one of the superb batsman from Australia ..he had a significant contribution on all those records secured by the Australian team . i ll miss watching this guy on this game .

All the best for .. off the game life.

God bless you ..and more happiness with your family .

  • it's a real shame his career didnt get as much celebration as mcgrath, warne and langer at the time.

  • how was his lofted drive through cover off flintoff during the last ashes

I remember watching it....man what a briliant shot

I miss watching him craft an innings

  • Damien Martyn was a gun.

    My favorite cricketer.

He was a player tht i tried to copy stronger on the off-side especially ova mid-off and the cover region

  • marto sometimes i pretend im him in the nets. even put the sweat band half way up my forearm.

  • One word...style.

  • great player, but the man would be remmerbed more fondly had he played one last test in perth.

  • made batting look so easy...his back-foot drives were unbelievable

  • Sorely missed. Dare i say...second only to Mark Waugh when it comes to style.

  • It's a close-run thing, that's for sure.

  • whats the tune thats played towards the end? It sounds nice

  • One of the most underrated Australian's, and that's very rare to say.

  • damien martyn was my fave batsmen...great technique...good striker of the ball...made batting look so easy. but he was for the most part of his career highly underrated. and whenever he hit a bad patch his copped a lot of criticism where as batsmen like ponting or hayden can have huge slumps in form and the media hardly even takes note of it. very humble player which is what i admire most about him.

  • too true. well said.

  • just 2 add that, hayden holds the record for most consecutive test matches without scoring a century by an aussie batsmen.

  • wow thats interesting...i new he had a huge slump in form during 04/05 but i didnt no it was that bad...yeah and its funny...despite that really long period of bad form by hayden and he wasnt even considered to be dropped...whereas martyn...who had jus scored a century against South Africa like jus a couple games b4 the 07/08 ashes...failed to pass 50 in jus 3 innings! only 3 friggen innings! and every1 insisted he be dropped...now that im sure would affect anyone deeply...no wonder he retired

  • well put mate. i had heard he was kinda arrogant, but hey, things do get taken outa hand sometimes...but i have always felt he was the best timer of the ball i have ever seen, and his backfoot drives were just perfect. shame to see him go, but it was up to him. know any highlight videos of him?

  • yer he was considered to be the most naturally/technically talented batsmen of the modern era after only tendulkar...they said he made batting look so easy compared to everyone else...

and no...sadly i cant seem to find any hightlight videos of him...sad

  • marto truely a champion, will always be my fav aussie player u were a genius with the willow and always under rated such a great team player and fuck the media i guess they finally got there way with marto gone but then again there all fuck heads

  • he was a true legend...best technique out of all the ozzy batsmen and not cocky at all. what a legend

  • green and gold are colours that don't run you fucking pansy

  • Damo, bloody legend mate! Best wishes for the future...top bloke.

  • Marto was brilliant, better than Tendulkar or Lara because he was a TEAM player...I hope the media are happy now, he's gone, like they always wanted him to be.

  • U r a tool

U mst seriously hve no respect for ppl hoo succeed in life better then u.

Also u try facin a bouncer from Shoaib Akhtar.

He never got the credit he deserved because he was a quiet achiever hoo didn't like the spotlight of the media.

Ur jst cut becoz Australia can produce quality cricketers by the numbers

  • I always liked Damien Martyn. I'd rank him 2nd to Mark Waugh in batsmen who made batting look so simple. He was a prolific run scorer and he was integral to helping Gilchrist captain the side to victory in India 3 years ago. Thanks Damien.

  • real champ!!!!! good human being!!!!!

  • i like DM....one of the few humbler players of the game

  • damien martyn was a class act ricky ponting is a fucking asshole he would have made better captain than punter

  • Truely a great great player !!

  • damien, youre the man in the subcontinent, saved australia many times there and will be the best number 4 in the current era. Too bad, damo, i never wanted to go out like this, at least a century before retirement but whatever it is, tke care.

  • Didn't stun me. He was a good player, but his average vs England was about 35, 15 lower than all the other good test teams. Couldn't hack it against the England bowlers.

  • In all fairness. Before the 2006/7 ashes ponting avergae "just" 40 against england compared to his career 56.

  • great player
