The laser can only burn out if you tweak its resistance (Ω) to a too low value. However, depending on the laser's resistance value, the Gamecube may or may not read some discs better.
@StingraySpin1 I would gladly give advice, but I don't remember anything about messing with the drivers (used Vista / XP). I never managed to get realtime saving or other things such as taking screenshots, although everything else worked just fine, like taking backups of savegames trough USB connection.
I think it's because those small experimental programs can be very buggy. You should check this out if it even helps: Google with "ngc scorpei viper" and it's the first link.
I had luck with imation DVD+R 16x disc's and I had to lower the pots resistance from 195 to 120 ohms before it started to read (170 is said to be the safelimit). Be warned, Gamecubes laser is kinda picky so it depends on following things whatever it reads the disc's or not:
1. DVD-burner
2. Burn speed (must be as low as possible)
3. DVD brand/type
4. Pots resistance
Also, many say that Ritek G04 Mini-DVDR's are the best type for Gamecube.
Nice one. What brand/type of dvd were you using? ive just ordered my viper extreme and dont know what disc to use. also, did you have to fiddle with the pot?
I can provide Win7 driver if needed

Can the laser burn out if you use a mini-dvd?

I have the V1.2 this version sucks?

I don't think so, I think 2.1 has many bug fixes and so on, go figure.

Sorry forgot to mention, it is a Viper GC Extreme I have.

Thanks for the reply. I have a problem, I was wondering if you could help me out please.
I have Cobra BIOS 2.1 running, and working fine.
I connected my viper to my laptop via USB, because I want to do some of the things like realtime save.
However, my laptop (which has Windows 7 - it is very new) can't find the drivers for it. What should I do?

Hey man, what Cobra BIOS are you running in this video? 1.6? 2.1?
StingraySpin1 2 years ago
It was 2.1.

that thing has a USB port right?
NetoAllStars 2 years ago
Yeah. The USB port is in the Viper GC Extreme adapter which goes to the bottom of Gamecube.

I think I need to replace the laser on mine, too. Where did you get your replacement from?
completebastard 2 years ago
Well I live in Europe, so I got mine from an internet shop that's in Finland (where I live too) called modpiiri dotcom.
