They've not become anything close to mainstream! Just compare mainstream metal to Dir en Grey. That's a completely different league and way to experimental for average metal. All their songs a complete genius, The old ones and the new ones.

I'm still glad that they stopped looking prototype VK 'cuz now people hopefully stop focusing on their looks more than really listening to their music, because it's really worth more than to be listened by japan-obsessed teenagers.

Just my opinion.

it's true; i'm not obsesees by japan or anything. back when dir en grey had that visual kei thing i didn't really like them, but now they are focusing on their music instead of their clothing, which they should. I call myself a fan now, i even traveled to england to see them. (without being obsessed, i just like good bands, good music and i hate fangirls/boys).

I went to a dir en grey concert recently in Oregon. Kyo was screaming, "Noose, Noose, Noose." and, "Portland, Portland, Portland!" He is so much different in person than you hear and see him in the albums. Kyo is a legend, like Jack Black.

Meh, it's not about the piercings though. Personally I don't like facial piercings at all, in my opinion it kind of goes along hand-in-hand with the whole emo trend. (Nothing against emo kids, if they want to dress like that then so be it, but it's just not my cup of tea to say the least.)
