I had mixed reaction when I saw the film for the first time, way back when but let me tell ya fellow trekkies I love the music. I rank it as the best ST movie theme made ecer. Does anyone know when JJ Abrams is bringing out the next ST movie?
I had the great pleasure of attending Star Trek: The Music in Calgary AB Canada, where the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra performed this, and I have to say I got chills when I heard it. It is by far the most powerful piece I've heard live - yes, even more than any of the TV themes or music from the new 2009 film -. If any1 gets the chance to see Star Trek music performed live, go. Klingons are a warrior race, if advantage is there they will take it, but if honour is involved sure they will do like WW2 & WW1 fighter pilots & not shoot down stricken bombers since they cannot shoot back, honour can be 2 way, klingons know that, even if there is no word for please in their language
Great theme. This song alone tells us more about the Klingon psyche than a library full of books could. Without Goldsmith the substance and fiber of the Klingon race would have been diminished, or at the very least far less colorful.
@Reclaimer77 Very eloquently put . I concur wholeheartedly, but was never able to express it so succinctly. The power of the score in film is unfortunately often overlooked and underappreciated.
Generally speaking, it's not the film composer's burdon to elevate a mediocre film. Often, it is salvaged by decent performances, a good script, good direction or even dazzling visuals (like Blade Runner).
The exception to this is clear: Jerry Goldsmith was a professional, through and through. This is "stand alone" music. I would go so far as to compare him to Mozart, Beethoven, Bartok and Stravinsky. The only problem is, he hasn't been dead long enough to be appreciated as such.
The first film proved that Gene lost his touch...IT was panned by all the Critics..IT was a over produced bunch of mess...And once the Enterprise got to the location..there was nothing to see....Star Trek 2..which Gene had nothing to do with.....Was hailed by the critics as what SHOULD of taken place the first time around..Trekkies want to see the friendship..and couple star battles in there...
Paramount and Harve Bennett took Star Trek away from Gene..and gave him that special title Consultant
@UFOSPACE1999 - One failure does not prove someone to be incompetent. It just proves that they're human. Now if Roddenberry had been like Lucas, and screwed up not once but three times in a row . . . .
@UFOSPACE1999 - Btw why don't you have a look at IMDB. The Motion picture's story was created by Alan Dean Foster, screenplay by Harold Livingston, directed by Robert Wise.
You see a Roddenberry in there anywhere? Because I sure don't. They do list Roddenberry but his credit is (television series Star Trek) which suggests to me that he is not majorly involved with the story itself. Not to the extent that say Lucas would be with the new movies.
@UFOSPACE1999 Actually the failure of the first movie was not entirely Roddenberry's fault. Paramount had a substantial role in that as well. They couldn't make up their minds whether they wanted it to be a TV show (they were actually trying to do what they eventually did with UPN in 1978), then they rushed the film into production. The first prints of the film were actually delivered to theaters wet--as in right out of the printing machines. Not a well-organized affair at all.
@cubdukat Well it took over one week to film the dreadful wormhole thing..What is the failure of Star Trek..other than the great Jerry Goldsmith music...IT has no heart. NO Friendship..like Star Trek 2 and 3 and 4. IT was a COLD affair...and they we all sent to battle..VGER!!! REALLY...no REALLY? VGER. While the orginal vision ran a hot or cold...The ever long trip to the Enterprise and the long boring pace to Vger...ONCE we all got there....THERE was nothing to see.
The Directors Cut of Star Trek The Movie is a rare example of when an overhaul makes a film better. I have seen the documentary with the special edition DVD and I now know about what went on, production problems and the deadline that had to be met. With all the problems and delays, it's amazing that it got made at all. If you want to see the film as it was ment to be, then watch the Directors Cut.
@LUKETAIL The problem was there was NO real threat. IT was Human's battling what Human's created. IT WAS BORING. U first need an Idea. Watching grass grow is more exciting than this endless dribble. THERE was NO fun in STTMP. NONE. The Visuals were so so. Jerry Goldsmith's music was the best part of Vger!!!! lol
NO one LASER blast. I Want to see dozens of LASER BLAST... Star Trek 2,3,4, First Contact,,and the reboot...are the best of the star trek's. Paramount told Rottenberry, take a hike!!!
@UFOSPACE1999 its true! half of the movie was the trip through giant space cloud and the other half was endless geeky techno-babble and spock and kirk petting each other and telling each other how much they love each other!
Gene Rottenberry totally screwed up STMP...IT was lame..and watching grass grow is more exciting than this crap...Jerry Goldsmith's score is the best thing about it...and DID U ALL KNOW..when they were going to make Star Trek 2..Paramount took over after Rottenberry had the idea of a time warp with the crew and Klingons and JFK!!! WOW..Rottenberry what u smoking back then??? I am glad Paramount took over and Nick Meyer...
@UFOSPACE1999 the one thing this film was make the klingons look threatining I am sure you would agree that in the orginal series they were just actors painted with shoe polish on their faces I know the show was low budgeted but with all the other creative aliens you think they would make them look better
@UFOSPACE1999 Sounds a bit like First Contact. I'd watch a JFK Star Trek. Besides which, what kind of Trekkie would have the balls to slam Gene for anything?
how is it that the music is better then the movie oh right the movie is basically coping 2001 a space odsessy by making it slow and boring plus the characters make me watch grass grow then listen to them talk
Awesome music, terrible movie. I give them credit, because it was Gene's first attempt at something other than a thrity minute episode, but still terrible.
No wonder the Klingons blew up the Pioneer probe in Final frontier---"V'ger "(aka "the Voyager" probe) destroyed three of thier ships and killed a number of fellow Klingons!

@PetrosofSparta No, they will use some generic music without any melody and then put this awesome theme at the end of the movie as a retro gimmick not realizing that this is much more awesome than anything they are able to produce.
This song always creeped me out from being a 'lil kid until now... that blaster beam and string combo... epci sounding but man does it give me the shivers
I liked Gowron too, until he became such a DOUCHE in DS9. Martok was MY ultimate favorite... Actually in order: Worf, Martok, K'eyhlar, Gowron, and all the others after that.
Please! What about the attack on DS9 made by the Klingons? I think that bit of profoundly epic fail utterly undoes any sort of awesome they had before.
Ok I'll give you that, what profoundly stupid move!
"We're pissed off because we don't get too attack our vastly superior enemy who we need all the help we need against..grrrrrr...let's attack our allies!"
Honestly though I have to call bad writing on that one.
Well his lead advisor at the tme was a changling and you gto to admit that the Cardisassians going with a civilian government after being a Junta for several decades was a sudden switch and a little ooc for them. Given the Klingonm Temeperment it not hard to be pushed into "It''s really Changings" Gowron only became a total douche when Real Martok started getting to much attention.
Yes the Kligons could generally be considered to be more upfront when it comes to battle, but they are also(despite what Q might say) smart, and would not overlook a tatical advantage like the element of surprise a cloaking device offers.
I never really understood why the Klingons use cloaking devices... It seems to go against their value of honor in battle... It makes total sense that Romulans would use them, it goes with their crafty style of battle, but it struck me as odd for the Klingons, who otherwise prefer a very straightforward style of fighting...
'The klingons were usually behind technologically with ship designs. Although the bird of prey was a powerful ship for size and fire power, in terms of speed, manuverability and engine efficiency they couldn't match the federation, Romulans,Vulcans, borg etc etc.Jnadreth said it exactly .Cloaking gave them a hunting edge to make attacks more effective.
I Love this piece... and it's incredibly unique...
in the TNG episode "The Defector" (s3e10), at the end where the Klingons decloak on either side of the Enterprise... seconds before they decloak, the key riff of this song made its way very naturally into the music, and I thought, "Wait, Klingons? Haha, nice!" and then they decloaked...
There's a very short aggressive motif in the cue 'The Raisuli' from Goldsmith's 'The Wind & The Lion Score' which sounds vaguely like his Klingon Theme.
yes, it's weird, because every versio of the movie I've seen has the music so loud that I can't tellk what the klingon are sayin if indeed they are talking at all.
WOW! I had this on vinyl when the movie/soundtrack first came out...and much, much later got it on CD. This is the definitive Klingon theme...It has held up extremely well and is still one of my all time favorite pieces of music. I never tire of hearing it.
I swore I saw 8 dislikes when I wrote this. I guess one of them decided that Klingon hell is a far worse fate than dying in honorable combat.

funny the new ST movie also compares the strenght of the narada to klingons.
TMP established V'Ger's power as "more than 3 klingon starships", which for the time and compared to the enterprise, was a hell of a power.
ST:XI set the Narada to "more than a fleet of klingons", which in turn makes sense, since the Narada is a 24th century ship.
...poor klingons, always being the cannonfodder of ST movies :P

Gowron was my favorite. But then again who can forget the honorable Worf, Son of Mogh?
HeruOfKemet 2 years ago
I liked Gowron too, until he became such a DOUCHE in DS9. Martok was MY ultimate favorite... Actually in order: Worf, Martok, K'eyhlar, Gowron, and all the others after that.
koradan 2 years ago 3
Gowron was class with the big eyes, "perhaps but not today".

Goldsmith came up with this great theme. And yet out did himself with the themes for Rudy, the greatest football film of all time.

the part at the end... Sounds sooo epic
it leaves you knowing that the klingon battle curisers are gone and a mystery is a foot !!!!!
frostymoviesjp 2 years ago
Please! What about the attack on DS9 made by the Klingons? I think that bit of profoundly epic fail utterly undoes any sort of awesome they had before.
nosorab3 2 years ago
Ok I'll give you that, what profoundly stupid move!
"We're pissed off because we don't get too attack our vastly superior enemy who we need all the help we need against..grrrrrr...let's attack our allies!"
Honestly though I have to call bad writing on that one.

@donovanfrost
Citrakite 2 years ago
lol. I was referring to a Kiligon TV Series.
donovanfrost 2 years ago
What Klingon TV series? I'm talking about DS9 which is the Trek series with the most Klingon Involvement.

"The key to winning all wars is deception.'

Yes the Kligons could generally be considered to be more upfront when it comes to battle, but they are also(despite what Q might say) smart, and would not overlook a tatical advantage like the element of surprise a cloaking device offers.
donovanfrost 2 years ago 14
@donovanfrost I think you said the quote wrong, but yeah. The Klingons of TOS and the numbered films were definately more capable enemies.

I never really understood why the Klingons use cloaking devices... It seems to go against their value of honor in battle... It makes total sense that Romulans would use them, it goes with their crafty style of battle, but it struck me as odd for the Klingons, who otherwise prefer a very straightforward style of fighting...
hydrotemplar 2 years ago 2
its more hunting using cloaking devices;) Klingon Culture tends to blend Hunting and battle;)

Why did DS9 have to make the Klingons suck?! They totally pulled a Voyager on them!
nosorab3 2 years ago
I Love this piece... and it's incredibly unique...
in the TNG episode "The Defector" (s3e10), at the end where the Klingons decloak on either side of the Enterprise... seconds before they decloak, the key riff of this song made its way very naturally into the music, and I thought, "Wait, Klingons? Haha, nice!" and then they decloaked...
hydrotemplar 2 years ago 4
I LOVE that episode!!!
That was one of those rare moments where I actually jumped out of my seat and yelled YEAH!
I wonder if anyone has posted that youtube...?

Horner used it just a couple of times and in a much more understated fashion

There's a very short aggressive motif in the cue 'The Raisuli' from Goldsmith's 'The Wind & The Lion Score' which sounds vaguely like his Klingon Theme.

you ppl spelled vejur wrong its V'Ger
chrisbob2580 2 years ago 6
I dunno, to this point I considered "vejur" an alternate "pre-Voyager VI discovery" spelling.
WWIIOLgeorgh 2 years ago
In Gene Roddenberry's novelization of the film, he spells it "Vejur", until the Voyager is discovered.
Is it weird that I sat here and recited all the lines of dialog that occur during this piece?
freakshowmonkey 2 years ago
yes, it's weird, because every versio of the movie I've seen has the music so loud that I can't tellk what the klingon are sayin if indeed they are talking at all.

Jerry Goldsmith is a true genius! The plucking strings and clacking noise give this piece a real mysterious tribal sound that is perfect.
mierpaul 3 years ago 8
WOW! I had this on vinyl when the movie/soundtrack first came out...and much, much later got it on CD. This is the definitive Klingon theme...It has held up extremely well and is still one of my all time favorite pieces of music. I never tire of hearing it.
