You should check out Puciato's work with his band The Dillinger Escape Plan and compare it with his singing on this song. Is pretty recognizable.

My personal theory is that it's about Devin's battle against drugs and alcohol, and a hypothetical situation in which he would relapse. At that point in the album I think he's full on drunk, so it would make sense to be senseless.

Basically, it starts with Ziltoid attacking Earth. Then a new colony of humans live on N9. Ki involves 2 people in love and a religious psychopath. They have a son who is kidnapped by the psycho, is sent to the destroyed earth with other kids to find the Universe. They return and the ship crashes, everyone dies, but the son.
