Thank you for putting this on - I love it. I also like your medley of Cluck Old Hen and Aunt Rhody; I hope you do more of the old songs. I am a near-beginner, and I'm only interested in songs that can be played on the traditional dulcimer with a noter (e.g. Wildwood Flower, Sweet Betsy, etc.). I wonder if anybody has compiled a list of such songs?
Yes, there are many lists and books of songs that can be played on a noter. Search on Everything dulcimer and Friends of the Mountain Dulcimer. These are websites with dulcimer tablature files, mp3 samples of dulcimer music, and forums for helping beginners. The Friends of the Mountain Dulcimer site has information and links to more information just for dulcimer players who use a noter.
Thanks Jesse....Yes, the box dulcimer I built is similar to the one you built. I modeled my dulcimer somewhat off of the box dulcimers that have been found in Tennessee. I like to think if the people who built the original box dulcimers back in the 1800's were still around, the evolution of their instruments would include some of the features I applied such as tuning pins instead of screw-eyes and brass instead of snuff cans for the tuning pin and hitch pin areas.
Aura Lee is a traditional old song that was one of the first songs I learned on my first dulcimer many years ago.
The box dulcimer makes me feel more like playing old traditional songs in the traditional mode for a dulcimer (with a noter) and I like to think Aura Lee was probably played on some of the old Tennessee Box dulcimers.
OOPS! I meant the medley of Boil Them Cabbage and Aunt Rhody.

Thanks German While learning this song I gained a new respect for dulcimers played with a noter and/or dulcimers with noters in general.

Great Dave. That dulcimer sounds awesome. It looks very sturdy too. Mine is very fragile. Very nice rendition of this old song. -Ron
