Wow. You guys are complete idiots. If there was any water in that mold, the aluminum would have popped. Also, you did not pour it smoothly. If there would be any air bubbles in there, it could have also very easily popped.
Why would you put your head so close to the mold, especially WITHOUT protective equipment for your face? Why would you not wear VERY thick leather gloves?
If the people in this video would have died or have been mutilated, they would have deserved it completely.
@AivasovskyHeifetz "If the people in this video would have died or have been mutilated, they would have deserved it completely." The laws of physics don't say anyone "deserves" squat, they just do what they do... And why does it matter anyway, since this affects them and them alone...?
make sure you bake or heat the mold up to get rid of water vapor and or moisture, otherwise when you pour in the molten metal (of any type) the water in mold or other tool that comes in contact with the molten metal will steam up and cause the molten metal to explode out of the mold. and i find it pretty stupid that you put your face right over it and tried to blow on it to cool it.
@SuperNorthAmerica Your mum sucks dewd! I had a 75 mustang 2 for years. All I did was work on that mother. Hard to work on too! So go suck a big viener ese?
You may or may not know but i have read books about aluminum molding and sand is used alot ponded tight sand molds.I had several books about casting aluminum don't know where they are right now.But i remember it tells about using a car heater motor to blow over charcoal and make a foundry it was very interesting to read. You mite find info on the inernet if your interested?

Wow, I guess losing your hands aren't important. I sincerely hope you took basic chemistry and realized that heating something to 600 degrees suddenly, especially concrete would cause it to break. What's worse is that the sudden temp. change could have made the metal pop out so to speak. If your heating over 200 degrees use common sense. Don't describe it as dangerous and use extreme caution then not do so yourself. Completely reckless and your lucky to be alive and safe.
The kelvin (symbol: K) is a unit increment of temperature and is one of the seven SI base units. The Kelvin scale is a thermodynamic (absolute) temperature scale where absolute zero, the theoretical absence of all thermal energy, is zero kelvin (0 K).
i knew cheys were made cheap. this proof of how bad its gotten up in michigan. what your are watching hear is a bunch of work at gm trying to make parts. gm is so bankrupt that they are using pop cans from there lunch break. to make hood symbols. its such a shame that why i am buy ford hahaahhaha :)
So Id like to stress this...we were just screwin around at a campfire, kinda a spur of the moment deal. The next vid we get on this will actually be thought out :) so why criticize??
No Safety goggles to save your eyes, no Leather gloves to save your hands & arms from being scarred......................What a bunch of numbnuts !!!!
sand+bentonite is too better.. u can find it in many agrarianchemical shops, they use it for adding wine.. 3parts sand 1 bentonite and just a little water..
if you put molten metal into a liquid it tends to actually make the situation worse, imagine when you put water on a pot thats been on the stove on high heat how it jumps and sometimes sprays and picture that with molten aluminum ...very painful, bad idea
i LOVE melting cans and stuff. i have so much aluminum. i can never get it to pour good though! btw, why use a wooden mould? i use a cast iron ingot mould. =)
A) I have a 3rd world understanding of English, growing up in the sprawling desert of Antarctica being the main reason. You probably know this but a desert doesn't have to be hot, just dry.
OMG that was completely something I would like to try, but watching you guys with your hands so close, and moving the mould around while there was hot aluminum in there made me so nervous lol. Have you made any more attempts since this? WOuld love to see anything else you have made. be careful *smiles*
BTW, get some gloves. It'll cost 5 bucks and you wont lose limbs. As well, what you were doing is not smelting. Smelting is refining the ore from which the metal comes, in this case bauxite, into aluminum. Don't waste your time with a wooden mold. DO NOT have moisture near it either, let alone wet it down! Use greensand, clay bonded silica sand. Just buy a bag of sand blasting sand and some firecay,
he had it too hot why it was searing up, ive found long as you mix tin or lead with aluminum sure it loses its light weight but it sets better with less bubbles and they should always smelt in a "still air area"
I do know what I`m talking about I`ve cast aluminium. Water and molten metal do not stay close to each other for very long. They were lucky to get away with what they were doing anyway. Someone will one day put a video of what happens when molten aluminium goes on skin then maybe people wouldn`t be so cocky with the stuff.
we carved it out of a block of wood. we had to wet it to prevent it from burning, but then that cause bubbles to form from the steam. a plaster mold would be much better.
Well, a couple pairs of gloves wouldn't have hurt, high quality welders gloves doesn't cost that much, and with them you don't risk loosing you hands if you get liquid aluminum on you hands.
