@Aprann I can't speak for the absolute historical accuracy of the series (as I haven't yet seen it), but it is an historical fact that Cesare and Lucrezia were two of Rodrigo de Borgia's (later pope Alexander VI) four children by his mistress Vannoza dei Cantanei.

Also true is that the Borgias were one of the most powerful families in Italy during the Renaissance, who ruled the papal states in much the same way as the Medicis in Florence and the Sforzas in Milan.

Errr...the opening shot of St. Peter's says it all really. The current basilica was only finished in the 17th century, and construction only began in 1506, after the death of Rodrigo Borgio. At this point, they were still using the old Constaninian basilica, which was in severe disrepair - as were all the other major churches in Rome. It's like having the Twin Towers in a Civil War period drama set in New York, essentially...no real hope for any accurcay then :P

@eHanHz the eponymous "assassin" is actually Michelotto Corella, who was famous for being Cesare's personal killer and I'm pretty sure was also in Brotherhood. Caterina Sforza showed up in the most recent episode, representing her family as potential suitors for Lucrezia. Leonardo's been mentioned by name when discussing painters, and apparently Machiavelli is scheduled to make an appearance soon (wouldn't make sense if he didn't, really). Don't know about Bartolomeo.

@TrustYourSkepticism The family/names are real, although the birth order is different in real life and the ages of the children are slightly skewed. Borgia did become pope in that year and by most accounts he bought his way in. But as far all the murders, etc....the show appears to be drifting further away from historical fact. There is some significant drama within the family itself in real life. I am wondering how much of that they will show.
