*head explodes* pieces everywhere! That was so Un-poseur! I've been trying to learn the version from the 10-11-1968 winterland show. The one from the 4th disc in the box set, but i'm a total poseur! This video was neato!
I've been listening to Hendrix and those who love him for 39 years, and I can honestly say you come the closest to his sound of any I've heard.....outstanding! Where does your band play, do you tour? Jimi would be impressed.
That is one of the best comments I've ever seen. Unfortunately, the band is not touring and all playing has been in the Phoenix valley, in Arizona, but it has been a while since they performed.
@InterlochenFan Yep, that's my conclusion. Randy Hansen is great, really great, but to my ears he just doesn't 'get' that Hendrix sound like Steve does. Having said that, I'd really love to hear Randy play through Steve's setup!
I only post these videos for Steve and EXP, but this question has been asked in the past. If you look just beneath where it says "Highest Rated Comments", click on georjec , it will take you to his channel, I wrote the basic chords out for him and his channel page is where they're still posted. You can probably copy and paste it.
Can I give you my thoughts? (just my opinion) - you're awesome, really great note for note cover but in my head I can't see Jimi being impressed with people imitating him (as fantastic as your tribute clearly is). Just my opinion but I always though the most important thing about Jimi Hendrix was that he advocated doing your own thing and finding your own style as an individual. That being said - wish I had your technique, you're superb.
I'm answering this for Steve, so blame me, if you disagree. It's almost very easy to play these differently, because they are incredibly hard to figure out, note-for-note. Steve likes to prove that he has a good enough ear to figure it out. Of all the songs I've posted, the ones that do the best are the closest copies of Jimi's versions. In reality, Steve would rather post original sounding versions, but will end up choosing the very best performed recording, regardless.
Also, Steve is well aware if anybody would be disappointed with an exact copy, it would be Jimi. Steve is playing these for Jimi's fans, not Jimi, and also he's not trying to fool anybody into thinking he can do a better verison than Jimi. Steve also plays versions that have lots of improvising too. But only recordings that are played well are posted, original sounding or note-for-note. The best performance is used first.
aBSOLUTLY FANTASIC! Amazing. I am still awed by Steve's talent. I was lucky to have caught his act a few times at the SUN CLUB around 1988. I fell in love with the tune after seeing and hearing Steve play it live. I have been playing it ever since. Yo! Steve! 1,000,000 thanks!!!
Well, money aint that important. If I get the time I'll just go ahead and do it. But what are you looking for? Do you want to see me do it to prove I can do it; or do you want me to break it down to show you how it's played? I can do it either way. Let me know.
I know that you are playing every note perfectly. When I was in the USMC and they were doing some psychological 'massage" on us I would listen to Hendrix's version of Rolling Stone in my mind. I always wanted to play it. If I could see how it was done I KNOW I could play it. If there was some way I could see how it was played I'd buiy a guitar in a week. I know my chords I just need some visual instruction. Oh master of the strings. : ). You are my favorite guitarist !!!
I've asked him this question on quite a few songs and his stock answer is "I'm not sure". He has quite a few Roger Mayer Fuzzes, but he has others too and he says although they're different, they are also very similar and quite a few sound almost the same, with subtle differences. Click on my name and when you get to my channel, find a page with little writing, and you'll see most of his pedals. He told me, he's pretty sure the Roger Mayer Heavy Metal fuzz was on his pedal board this night.
I was just watching a program on TV and it featured Jimi Hendrix and his appearance at Monterey!!!!!! It's such a great cover of BobDylan's song. Steve Webb & Exp. did a wonderful job of bringing this song back to live again! Thanks for putting it on Youtube.
I saw Jimi at Monterey in 67 and Oakland in 69. His Monterey performance of Like A Rolling Stone is one of my favorites. I've taken the time to try to figure it out lick for lick, and I think the guy in this video does a pretty good job. Really enjoyed it. Thanks bro!
From what little I can tell, he's a brand new YouTube user, might be young and may not speak English as his first language. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.
yea, sorry fellas, i didn't mean n e thing by it, but randy hansen does resemble prince a little bit, just pointing that out, he is still amazingly good tho, doesnt mean n e thing about his talent, yea i am new
Steve's hair almost naturally, looks like that. But would normally be curlier. ( more like Sammy Hagar) That's the only thing, besides playing guitar and having a mustache that resembles Jimi. He's too big to get the look and has never tried to emulate anything but the sound.
I'm thankful you thought he was great and you liked it. Would you say that to Randy Hansen?
You'd be surprised how much people are disappointed because they expect an all out tribute, complete with costume.
ok alright, then this guy is filled with talent and all my respect goes out to him and his band, nice to know tho, thanks, randy hansen looks like prince, still good, but tries too hard, i think
No problem. I think you are just a little new to this. Everyone has their own opinion. When you post your videos of you playing Jimi, you'll understand how hard it is to please everybody.
your style is nice .. i am sorry for my hard words, for me is hendrix the best guitar player ever and it makes me happy that peaple play these songs because they are great !! but i dont play the songs live because they are holy for me.... thats my opinion and i have no right to condemn you !!!!! i am sorry
Hansvan, YOU are a troll. Who are you to say Steve "dont understand'? Why do orchestras play works of musical geniuses like Mozart, Beethoven, etc.? Why are there Elvis Presley & other tribute bands? Because those performers are GONE or their band is GONE & people still enjoy seeing and hearing their music performed live.
Trolls like you are only here to criticize & insult musicians you could never even come close to bettering, provided you play an instrument in the first place!
Thanks a lot. If you click on my name you'll find a picture of his amp on my channel. You may need to find the right page, once you're there, to see it clearly. It's a 1969 Marshall 100 watt.
I forgot to tell you I can imitate Jimi's voice particularly on Like A Rolling Stone, :) but as well as Rock Me Baby, Johnny Be Good...hell, I can do Jimi's voice :)
When I start my YouTube page...I'll let you know.
I hear what you're saying and I don't have a real good argument.
But there's a probably a good chance you wouldn't have said "really really really" and "very" if they played that any other way. That's my guess anyway. Jimi's version is strong.
very good point. But im really just trying to say that jimis was like insperational , soulful , cravy , and to cover his creativness is just kinda like cheating.
atl2maryland "he plays all the songs right as far notation but rhythmically its lacking that Jimi feel.. like whats up him with him not being able to carry out up strokes"
Why don't you videotape your performance, upload it to YouTube and show us how it's 'correctly' done, 'Jimi'?
Just as I thought...another non-playing critic, i.e. self-professed 'expert.'
he plays all the songs right as far notation but rhythmically its lacking that Jimi feel.. like whats up him with him not being able to carry out up strokes
Steve will be the 1st to tell you that nobody can get the feel right, and I'm pretty sure he's including everybody left of Earth. I know he'll keep trying, in spite of what anybody thinks. I think he's obsessed and no other music means nearly as much to him as Jimi's.
So, Steve, tell me, just how long have you been taking lessons from Jimi? I'm serious! Also, you have the most authentic Hendrix-sounding guitar/amp set-up I've ever heard! The guitarists I've heard doing their Hendrix imitation/tribute have an artificial sound--except you. Anyone know what I'm talking about? Hendrix' sound was raw, loud and clean, with overdrive and/or fuzz yes, but not where it dominates the sound. Anyone understand what I'm saying?
Super nice comments, Electrix... unfortunately, I have to be the middleman. Steve says he's been "taking lesson" from Jimi since he first heard the studio version of 'I Don't Live Today' and is still taking lessons. I know he appreciates what you've said, because getting the guitar sound right is something he says he's still striving for as he's hardly able to crank up a 100 watter anymore and he's never quite sure if the sound is up to par or if anyone notices. So, thanks again.
Like they said, you nailed it. Tone is spot on and you're playing all the fills. I enjoyed that.

Keep up the great playing!
