  • im remember first time i heard an owl scrrech i was coonhunting standing im pitch black woods son of a bitch screeched right behind me almost shit myself

  • little bit of useless trivia, but in Irish Gaelic, barn owls are called scréachán reilige, which translates as graveyard screecher. Listening to that you can see why

  • At the very beginning I also hear an extremely soft barred owl hoot.

  • Barn owls are supposedly the culprits behind many of the ghost stories. Mainly due to their faces, the bobbing, and the stomping. And, especially, that blood-curdling screech!

  • yesterday me and my mum walking my dog yesterday and we heard and Ooooo Oooooooo we thought it was a person we got closer and it was more cleary Oooo Oooooooooooo defently an owl i thought it was a barn owl but not sure we live in raynes park whats near wimbledon in england

  • we have a bajillion barn owls outisde where i live and now its as common as hearing crickets(:

at first we coudnt figure out what it was we were thinking maybe bats and then we saw one chilling in a tree(: they are SO cute(:

  • Barn Owls don't hoot ?

  • lol, I told my sister I always hear a mysterious screech at night when she's asleep and she doesn't want the door closed (Although I didn't know what it was myself!)

  • Owls like to hang out in the tree directly outside my bedroom window and this scared the shit out of me when I heard this...

  • Ive heard something similar in a friends barn. There was a bunch of scratching noises like walking around. Then all of a sudden the sound of breathing came up. It sounded like a big animal though and the sound wasn't much of a screech. I was with a bunch of buds when it happened and we all heard it! Nothing like a tree could have made a sound like that. Any ideas what it was?

  • i dont think its scary. i think is really cool and amazing.

  • aww thats just an barn owl fledgling calling for its mother. yes they are very loud (my aunt has them right by her house) but its cool to think that those barn owls are raising babies right by your house.

  • woah ive always thought it was like a demon or a chupacabra outside but its just an owl hahha

  • I know to you all they sound horrible, but to me it's quite lovely. It's amazing the sounds barn owls (more sientifically known as Tyto Alba) make are so fluent and clear. They also sound very nice when they 'tweeter'- a noise made when teaching hatchlings.

  • motherfucker i 4 got 2 turn down my volume

  • I hear these guys all night :D

  • if i heard that at night, id quickly grab my gun/cross.

  • I'm going to play this for my starlings in the attic... I'll show them some chirp.

  • just heard that sound outside before............ creepy

  • I was outside one night and I heard a barn owl screech.

It's kinda creep in this video, but hearing it in person is a lot more chilling.

  • Holy SHIT! I'd seriously shit my pants if I heard that in the middle of the night.

  • oh snap...i always used to think that screech was a huge ass bug out in a tree or somethin.

  • and thats why you know your sounds before goin camping, oh and a fox mating call, that'll give ya chills

  • The first time I ever heard this was when I had wandered into the woods to pee at night while backpacking. All alone, no light, with my pants down and heard a sound like Satan himself had just opened the gates of hell right behind me.

  • Ever hear a fox screech?

  • I hate to correct you, but it IS a barn owl that's making that terrible screech. The classic barred owl hoot is the "who cooks for you" hoot.

Admittedly, baby barred owls begging for food can sound a little like a barn owl, but that's not the case here.

There were some barred owls in the area when this was taken so you may hear some of them, but the big, loud screech is definitely a barn owl (as well as some baby barn owls, they lived in a big dead tree, we've seen them).

  • @darthchase actually no it is not a barn owl :/ i have one right here on my shoulder and he certainly doesnt do bat-like noises. still it is still an owl

  • That's not a barn owl, that's at least two "barred" owls. We have tons of them here in south Louisiana. Cool birds.

  • i think an owl lives in a forest nearby where i live and it visits my neighbor hood often and i hear its screeches in the middle of the night i even saw it once i just think it may live in the forest nearby it is quite a pain to hear it screeching outside every night

  • Cool! I like that sound. :)

  • @jeffandscottvideos1 and you know what I say? shut the fuck up I'm tryna get to sleep! :')

  • They sound a bit sceary :-[

  • IT BATOWL IT SOUND LIKE A BAT MIXED WITH A OWL

  • Agh, one of these jolted me awake last night at 2:50 AM. Scared the crap out of me.

  • thats what woke me up last night!!!!! so happy you posted this =)

  • Spooky!!!

  • I just heard one fly by my house at 1 am. It was really loud. I live in a suburban area, but there's a nature preserve about 100 feet away from my house.

  • @link4265 It must have been a pygmie or an elf owl, because all the other owl species have flutings which cause an owl to be completely silent. I wonder what is was? Maybe a hawk or an eagle of some sort?

  • OHJEZZ! Ok.... catching my breath.

  • when i was staying in kentucky once a big ass owl get on our porch and screamed loud as hell. i tried to kill it

  • @Orthropox14 It's illegal to kill most owls... If a cop read this, they could track your IP adress and have you arrested for "Attack of an endangered species."

  • I heard a screech owl outside my house right after I watched the blair witch project for the first time.

  • SSSHHHHHH!

  • yep theres a barred owl here love the sounds though.....reminss me of upnorth

  • I thought it was a person saying "shhhh!" so we could hear the owls. lol!

  • hahah me too!

  • Was this recorded at an animal shelter? I hear a barred owl in background, and there was a screech owl in your other video, and a great horned owl.. all in the same spot?

  • hahaha, just heard this noise a minute ago outside. Scared the heck out of me. Nice to know it's a just cute harmless owl. XD

  • Thats sooooooo freakin scary! I hate owls!!!!!!!!!

  • @BIGpandyandi12345678 owls scare the shit out of me

  • Right about the barn owl, wrong about the great horned owl. Great Horned owls make the "normal" owl calls. You have a Barred Owl in the background, making it's mating call. CanadiaNecro1 is right. That is there distinctive call. Great video regardless!

  • You've also got a Barred owl.

He's doing his "who-cooks for you? who cooks for you-all?" call.

  • The first screech sounds like a little kid!

  • Last night, I heard an owl but it didn't screech like that one.

  • Barn owl produces many different sounds, maybe it was

  • We heard this exact same sound last night when we got home. Scared the heck out of my son!!!

  • ohhh thats cool, there's something outside my house that screeches late at night, like... for hours on end

  • lol probly an owl woot!@

  • i thought the camera is man is saying Pshhh Pshhhh so i can record the owl's sound hahahaha

  • I heard one of these in Iraq while on alert. Nothing was going on that night until I heard this little bastard begin to screech from behind an aircraft shelter blast wall. I had no clue as to what kind of animal it was so I was wary about shining my light on it. The shelter amplified any sound in it so the screeching was unbelievably loud. This owl could easily replace the "trunk monkey" in cars.

  • that is pretty high on a list of things you don't want to hear at night while trying to fall asleep.... D: that's scary. good thing owls are pretty and all...

  • Comment removed

  • I have a bird outside my house and i cant figure out what it is, we think its a barn owl but the screech starts low and gets to a high pitch. An ideas?

  • i heard a barn owl befor they screech so loud

  • Tonight I heard a REALLY loud scream from outside our house, there was no one there but it was like a woman's scream. I had heard it before last summer and I have the windows wide open and it's like 2am and the scream made me jump out of my skin nearly lol. It sounds like a woman being murdered!! I heard it about 4 times and then it stopped. I think it was an Owl, but man is it one of the scariest sounds you will ever hear.

  • we had a sound like that once, every night around 3 am for a few days and it turned out to be a bobcat.....

  • sounds like someone was going SSHHHH really loudly! hahaha

  • jesus christ that sounded like that scream on the scary maze games!

  • I love walking through the woods at night. I do it year round usually and when I have other people who don't usually spend time in the forest and they that "HRREEEEEE HRREEEEEE" they freak out. It's funny.

  • wow, that's scary especially in the dark like that. Someone's upset XD

  • thats LOUD!!

  • isn't the other bird that you can hear in the background a spotted owl? I am not very bird call savvy. But I have heard a similar sound to the one in the background of this vid and I have wondered if it might be a spotted owl or some other type of owl.

  • i think its a barred owl

  • the hoot in the backround is a barred owl they are my fave owls!

  • this was happenign near me and i was scary because everytime i went outside it sounded like loud breathing of a big animal but it was the dam owl on the church

  • GAH! Thank you!! I was woken up at 4 in the morning to that screetching racket but couldn't figure out what it was!! THNX <3

  • i grew up next to a deep woods and would sometimes walk a short distance at night, in the summer, looking for snakes and frogs with my flashlight. one night i heard one of these owls, and even though i knew it was an owl, it gave my cold chills everytime i heard it the rest of summer. but what an awesome bird!

  • Thank you for sharing. :) i have a couple birds attacking me when I leave my house, I'm going to set a cd player outside and play this in hopes of scaring them off. :) yours is by far the best quality I've found!

  • You said there is a great horned owl hooting in the background (at the begining?)

That is actually the call of a Barred Owl

with it's signature "who who who, who cooks for you!" call!

  • you're probably right. i'm no expert on these things... my bad...

  • the owls eat mice & they spit out the mice's bones i think...

  • Yes. Owls swallow their food whole then spit the bones and other stuff out.

  • @darthchase I could hear another owl saying who

  • I'm quite familiar with the sound and sight of barn owls. I used to go to the gym at night, the gym was at a shopping mall and right outside a pair of barn owls nested.

  • scared the hell out of me my volume was all the way up and my heart skipped a beat

  • Yeah try it when you're out in the woods going for a walk and don't know one's sitting there watching you. I almost jumped over the creek!

    L O U D ! ! !

Good to have them around though.

  • i hate it when they do that im sleeping....i jump up every time

  • what is the scarest owl screech besides this one.

  • Check out my vids to REALLY hear a SCARY owl screech...(and something even SCARIER!)

    OwlMan

  • Nothing quite scares the hell out of you then an owl at night. I use to hear them for years and never knew what the hell it was.

  • yeah, this was quite bonechilling!

  • i completely hear you dude, when i was 11 me and my brother went to bed at about midnight, it was nice and peacful out then i just heard what sounded like a woman or very strange creature shrieking eventually we found out it was just a barn owl but i had trouble sleeping the rest of the summer becuase i lived in constant fear of hearin it again

  • No worries! I try to be helpful if that is at all possible.

Still, very nice barn owl...definately creepy if you are not expecting to hear them.

  • sounds like a barred owl in the background instead of a great horned. Awesome vid.

  • this barn owl keeps coming into our garden every night and at 2 o'clock in the morning, it screeches really loud! how you feel if that was you? lol

  • very cool.

  • CREEPY XD

  • I love owls
